The Ever Changing Circumstellar Nebula Around UW Centauri
We present new images of the reflection nebula surrounding the R Coronae
Borealis Star, UW Cen. This nebula, first detected in 1990, has changed its
appearance significantly. At the estimated distance of UW Cen, this nebula is
approximately 0.6 ly in radius so the nebula cannot have physically altered in
only 8 years. Instead, the morphology of the nebula appears to change as
different parts are illuminated by light from the central star modulated by
shifting thick dust clouds near its surface. These dust clouds form and
dissipate at irregular intervals causing the well-known declines in the R
Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. In this way, the central star acts like a
lighthouse shining through holes in the dust clouds and lighting up different
portions of the nebula. The existence of this nebula provides clues to the
evolutionary history of RCB stars possibly linking them to the Planetary

On the Evolved Nature of CK Vul

Recent studies have proven however, that CK Vul cannot be unambiguously classified as any known kind of eruptive variable. We present the optical and radio observations of the remnants of the eruption of CK Vul in the year 1670 in order to discuss possible scenarios for this object. We have measured the proper motion which proves that the nebula is attributed to the star observed during its 1670−1672 brightening. A large bipolar nebula of 70 arcsec is discovered in a deep Hα image. Radio observations reveal a barely resolved source placed in the expansion center of the ejecta
Momentos Subversivos: desafiando as tradições da história constitucional
O texto explora os desdobramentos teóricos e metodológicos do curso “Gênero e História Constitucional”, ministrado e criado pelas professoras Patricia A. Cain e Linda K. Kerber. Há dois momentos, um sobre levantamento histórico dos cursos de Gênero e o Direito e similares; o outro, com análise de casos utilizados no próprio curso ministrado, tendo sempre como pano de fundo as interseções entre a história, o Direito Constitucional e as lutas feministas. O primeiro, Coger vs North West Union Packet Co; o segundo, Coggeshall vs Cidade de Des Moin; por fim, Green vs Shama. Ao revisitar a história do movimento feminista, tendo como objeto o Direito e suas matizes, as autoras encontraram achados sobre a ocultação de elementos da história feminista. Além disso, o texto possui um caráter pedagógico acentuado por estar sempre cruzando os achados teóricos com os feedbacks dos alunos e da experiência em sala de aula com o curso. Ele serve, também, como incentivo para que mais cursos nesse estilo sejam ministrados. Uma vez que, explorar a história constitucional do feminismo se mostrou uma forma muito eficaz (e reprodutível) de ser subversivo. O trabalho foi publicado em 2002, mas continua extremamente atual
MODIS Tree Cover Validation for the Circumpolar Taiga-Tundra Transition Zone
A validation of the 2005 500m MODIS vegetation continuous fields (VCF) tree cover product in the circumpolar taiga-tundra ecotone was performed using high resolution Quickbird imagery. Assessing the VCF's performance near the northern limits of the boreal forest can help quantify the accuracy of the product within this vegetation transition area. The circumpolar region was divided into longitudinal zones and validation sites were selected in areas of varying tree cover where Quickbird imagery is available in Google Earth. Each site was linked to the corresponding VCF pixel and overlaid with a regular dot grid within the VCF pixel's boundary to estimate percent tree crown cover in the area. Percent tree crown cover was estimated using Quickbird imagery for 396 sites throughout the circumpolar region and related to the VCF's estimates of canopy cover for 2000-2005. Regression results of VCF inter-annual comparisons (2000-2005) and VCF-Quickbird image-interpreted estimates indicate that: (1) Pixel-level, inter-annual comparisons of VCF estimates of percent canopy cover were linearly related (mean R(sup 2) = 0.77) and exhibited an average root mean square error (RMSE) of 10.1 % and an average root mean square difference (RMSD) of 7.3%. (2) A comparison of image-interpreted percent tree crown cover estimates based on dot counts on Quickbird color images by two different interpreters were more variable (R(sup 2) = 0.73, RMSE = 14.8%, RMSD = 18.7%) than VCF inter-annual comparisons. (3) Across the circumpolar boreal region, 2005 VCF-Quickbird comparisons were linearly related, with an R(sup 2) = 0.57, a RMSE = 13.4% and a RMSD = 21.3%, with a tendency to over-estimate areas of low percent tree cover and anomalous VCF results in Scandinavia. The relationship of the VCF estimates and ground reference indicate to potential users that the VCF's tree cover values for individual pixels, particularly those below 20% tree cover, may not be precise enough to monitor 500m pixel-level tree cover in the taiga-tundra transition zone
V605 Aql: The Older Twin of Sakurai's Object
New optical spectra have been obtained with VLT/FORS2 of the final helium
shell flash (FF) star, V605 Aql, which peaked in brightness in 1919. New models
suggest that this star is experiencing a very late thermal pulse. The evolution
to a cool luminous giant and then back to a compact hot star takes place in
only a few years. V605 Aql, the central star of the Planetary Nebula (PN), A58,
has evolved from T5000 K in 1921 to 95,000 K today. There are
indications that the new FF star, Sakurai's Object (V4334 Sgr), which appeared
in 1996, is evolving along a similar path. The abundances of Sakurai's Object
today and V605 Aql 80 years ago mimic the hydrogen deficient R Coronae Borealis
(RCB) stars with 98% He and 1% C. The new spectra show that V605 Aql has
stellar abundances similar to those seen in Wolf-Rayet [WC] central stars of
PNe with ~55% He, and ~40% C. The stellar spectrum of V605 Aql can be seen even
though the star is not directly detected. Therefore, we may be seeing the
spectrum in light scattered around the edge of a thick torus of dust seen
edge-on. In the present state of evolution of V605 Aql, we may be seeing the

Discovery of Five New R Coronae Borealis Stars in the MACHO Galactic Bulge Database
We have identified five new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Galactic
bulge using the MACHO Project photometry database, raising the total number of
known Galactic RCB stars to about 40. We have obtained spectra to confirm the
identifications. The fact that four out of the five newly identified RCB stars
are ``cool'' (T(eff) 6000 K) suggests
that the preponderance of warm RCB stars among the existing sample is a
selection bias. These cool RCB stars are redder and fainter than their warm
counterparts and may have been missed in surveys done with blue plates. Based
on the number of new RCB stars discovered in the MACHO bulge fields, there may

Detecting Planets Around Very Low Mass Stars with the Radial Velocity Method
The detection of planets around very low-mass stars with the radial velocity
method is hampered by the fact that these stars are very faint at optical
wavelengths where the most high-precision spectrometers operate. We investigate
the precision that can be achieved in radial velocity measurements of low mass
stars in the near infrared (nIR) Y-, J-, and H-bands, and we compare it to the
precision achievable in the optical. For early-M stars, radial velocity
measurements in the nIR offer no or only marginal advantage in comparison to
optical measurements. Although they emit more flux in the nIR, the richness of
spectral features in the optical outweighs the flux difference. We find that
nIR measurement can be as precise than optical measurements in stars of
spectral type ~M4, and from there the nIR gains in precision towards cooler
objects. We studied potential calibration strategies in the nIR finding that a
stable spectrograph with a ThAr calibration can offer enough wavelength
stability for m/s precision. Furthermore, we simulate the wavelength-dependent
influence of activity (cool spots) on radial velocity measurements from optical
to nIR wavelengths. Our spot simulations reveal that the radial velocity jitter
does not decrease as dramatically towards longer wavelengths as often thought.
The jitter strongly depends on the details of the spots, i.e., on spot
temperature and the spectral appearance of the spot. Forthcoming nIR
spectrographs will allow the search for planets with a particular advantage in
mid- and late-M stars. Activity will remain an issue, but simultaneous
observations at optical and nIR wavelengths can provide strong constraints on

for the generalized iterated wreath product. We also prove an existence of a
bijection between the equivalence classes of ordinary irreducible
representations of the generalized iterated wreath product and orbits of labels
on certain rooted trees. We find a recursion for the number of these labels and
the degrees of irreducible representations of the generalized iterated wreath
product. Finally, we give rough upper bound estimates for fast Fourier

Establishing a multidisciplinary specialist centre for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders—Lessons learned from a model project in Germany
Background
Inadequate coordination between relevant professionals hampers the provision of appropriate care for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Integrated, multidisciplinary care is thus urgently required. Hence, we aimed at establishing the first university-bound, interdisciplinary specialist centre for FASD in Germany, systematically collecting data on its utilisation and evaluation by attendees.
Methods
After our centre started to provide consultation and support services in July 2019 until May 2021, we collected 233 questionnaires on the centre's utilisation (including attendees' sociodemographic characteristics and the topics on which they requested consultation, e.g., general information about FASD, consultation on therapy options, and educational consultation). Ninety-four of 136 individuals who received consultation at our centre submitted an evaluation questionnaire that recorded attendees' satisfaction with the support they had received (e.g., the extent to which the consultation met their needs).
Results
Of 233 participants who completed the utilisation questionnaire, 81.8% were female, and 56.7% were aged 40 to 60 years. Moreover, 42% were foster parents, while 38% were professionals. Most attendees had questions on FASD in general as well as on a specific child or adolescent with FASD. Almost three quarters of the attendees requested consultation on adequate therapies for FASD patients, while 64% had questions on parenting issues. The overall quality of the consultation was rated very well.
Discussion
Our service was used by both caregivers and professionals who reported numerous and complex concerns and needs. Professionally sound and multidisciplinary services are viable instruments to meet those needs, bearing the potential for quick and notable relief among individuals affected. We propose further advancement of networking and coordination between care providers, the expansion of multidisciplinary services, and securing early diagnosis and consistency of care as relevant steps to even better support children and adolescents with FASD and their families in the future
The VMC survey - XIV : First results on the look-back time star formation rate tomography of the Small Magellanic Cloud
Date of Acceptance: 20/01/2015We analyse deep images from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds in the YJKs filters, covering 14 deg2 (10 tiles), split into 120 subregions, and comprising the main body and Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We apply a colour-magnitude diagram reconstruction method that returns their best-fitting star formation rate SFR(t), age-metallicity relation (AMR), distance and mean reddening, together with 68 per cent confidence intervals. The distance data can be approximated by a plane tilted in the East-West direction with a mean inclination of 39°, although deviations of up to ±3 kpc suggest a distorted and warped disc. After assigning to every observed star a probability of belonging to a given age-metallicity interval, we build high-resolution population maps. These dramatically reveal the flocculent nature of the young star-forming regions and the nearly smooth features traced by older stellar generations. They document the formation of the SMC Wing at ages <0.2 Gyr and the peak of star formation in the SMC Bar at ~40 Myr. We clearly detect periods of enhanced star formation at 1.5 and 5 Gyr. The former is possibly related to a new feature found in the AMR, which suggests ingestion of metal-poor gas at ages slightly larger than 1 Gyr. The latter constitutes a major period of stellar mass formation. We confirm that the SFR(t) was moderately low at even older ages.Peer reviewe
