Heavy Quark Production at High Energy
We report on QCD radiative corrections to heavy quark production valid at
high energy. The formulae presented will allow a matched calculation of the
total cross section which is correct at O(\as^3) and includes resummation of
all terms of order \as^3 [\as \ln (s/m^2)]^n. We also include asymptotic
estimates of the effect of the high energy resummation. A complete description
of the calculation of the heavy quark impact factor is included in an appendix.Comment: 32 pages (LaTeX) with three figures. Resubmission to agree with

Classical Functional Bethe Ansatz for : separation of variables for the magnetic chain
The Functional Bethe Ansatz (FBA) proposed by Sklyanin is a method which
gives separation variables for systems for which an -matrix is known.
Previously the FBA was only known for and (and associated)
-matrices. In this paper I advance Sklyanin's program by giving the FBA for
certain systems with -matrices. This is achieved by constructing
rational functions \A(u) and \B(u) of the matrix elements of , so
that, in the generic case, the zeros of \B(u) are the separation
coordinates and the P_i=\A(x_i) provide their conjugate momenta. The method
is illustrated with the magnetic chain and the Gaudin model, and its wider

Control of macrophytes by grass carp (ctenopharyngodon idella) in a Waikato drain, New Zealand
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum L.) and other aquatic macrophytes have historically been mechanically removed from the Rangiriri drain and Churchill East drain to maintain drain efficiency. As an alternative control method for the high plant biomass that accumulates at the end of summer, the effect of stocking diploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella L.) on the aquatic vegetation was evaluated in these Waikato drainage systems. At the start of the trial, both drains had a low diversity of aquatic macrophytes, and of the nine species (including the emergents), seven were exotic. Two months after grass carp were released to Churchill East drain (the treated drain) the four submerged and floating macrophyte species became scarce in the main drain. Over the same period, these species increased in biomass in Rangiriri drain (the untreated drain), where hornwort became dense and surface-reaching and remained so for the duration of the trial. However, grass carp did not control submerged vegetation in smaller side drains or the shallow, upper parts of the main drain, or the marginal sprawling species and emergent species. The cost of leasing the grass carp was similar to the cost of clearing the drains mechanically, but grass carp provided continuous weed control. However, subsequent to this trial, 62 dead grass carp were found in Churchill East drain in February 2001, and weed cover subsequently increased. This illustrates that grass carp management in New Zealand agricultural drains can be problematic due to periodic fish kills
Breakdown of counterflow superfluidity in a disordered quantum Hall bilayer
We present a theory for the regime of coherent interlayer tunneling in a
disordered quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor one, allowing for the
effect of static vortices. We find that the system consists of domains of
polarized superfluid phase. Injected currents introduce phase slips between the
polarized domains which are pinned by disorder. We present a model of saturated
tunneling domains that predicts a critical current for the breakdown of
coherent tunneling that is extensive in the system size. This theory is
supported by numerical results from a disordered phase model in two dimensions.
We also discuss how our picture might be used to interpret experiments in the
counterflow geometry and in two-terminal measurements.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
