    Principles of Aristotle’s Poiesis as a Foundation for Human-Centered Engineering Design

    In order to improve design methodology and better utilize human-centered design (HCD) approaches, there is a need for an intellectual foundation to reconcile HCD with traditional design approaches. A method from Aristotle, called Poiesis, provides a useful basis for this while helping to relate engineering design to a general discipline of design. In this paper, we explain what Poiesis is in an engineering design context, and examine the similarities between current methods and this ancient approach. Current methodology is similar to different parts of Poiesis, but we propose that it can be improved by combining different existing methods using Poiesis as a framework for a more comprehensive, holistic approach

    A Quantitative Exploration of the Existentialist Urban Planner and Work Engagement

    The purpose of this study is to explore existentialism synthesized with urban planning theory and develop a measure for the "existentialist urban planner." For existentialists, existence precedes essence, and the profession of urban planning would not exist without this belief. Other existentialist concepts which can be found within a planner's mindset are facticity, transcendence, free will, bad faith, authenticity, and being-with-others-albeit not in these terms. The Existentialist Urban Planner Scale (EUPS) was created to measure a planner's existentialist worldview based upon the main existentialist concepts. The results of the survey showed that there are existentialist urban planners. The existentialist urban planners have a significantly positive correlation with work engagement, and especially the work engagement subcomponent, dedication. Also, the existentialist urban planner associates with an entrepreneurial work culture

    Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and DFT Calculations of Three New Cyano(phenylsulfonyl)indoles and a Key Synthetic Precursor Compound

    Three cyano-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indole derivatives, 3-cyano-1-(phenylsulfonyl) indole, (I), 2-cyano-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indole, (II), and 2,3-dicyano-1-(phenylsulfonyl) indole, (III), and a key synthetic precursor 1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1-(1,1-dimethylethyl) indole-3-carboxamide, (IV), have been synthesized and their structures determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. (I), C15H10N2O2S, is orthorhombic with space group P 212121 and cell constants: a = 4.9459(3) Å, b = 10.5401(7) Å, c = 25.0813(14) Å, V = 1307.50(14) Å3 and Z = 4. (II), C15H10N2O2S, is monoclinic with space group C 2/c and cell constants: a = 18.062(2) Å, b = 11.293(2) Å, c = 15.922(3) Å, α = 90°, β = 124.49(2)°, g = 90°, V = 2676.7 Å3 and Z = 8. (III), C16H9N3O2S, is triclinic with space group P-1 and cell constants: a = 8.1986(8) Å, b = 9.6381(11) Å, c = 9.8113(5) Å, α = 95.053(6)°, β = 101.441(6)°, g = 108.071(9)°, V = 713.02(11) Å3 and Z = 2. (IV), C19H20N2O3S, is orthorhombic with space group P ccn and cell constants: a = 13.7605(8) Å, b = 27.3177(14) Å, c = 9.7584(6) Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, g =90°, V = 3668.2(4) Å3 and Z = 8. All four compounds have the same indole nitrogen phenylsulfonyl substituent and (I), (II), and (III) are nitrile derivatives. (IV) is a tert-butylamide. In the crystals, the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the indole and phenylsulfonyl groups are 85.4(2)° (I), 87.2(7)° (II), 75.1(7)° (III), and 88.6(2)° (IV), respectively. Additionally, DFT geometry-optimized molecular orbital calculations were performed and frontier molecular orbitals of each compound are displayed. Correlation between the calculated molecular orbital energies (eV) for the surfaces of the frontier molecular orbitals to the electronic excitation transitions from the absorption spectra of each compound has been proposed

    Bilateral Popliteal Entrapment Syndrome in a Young Athlete Diagnosed with Ultrasound

    Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) occurs when the popliteal artery is compressed by abnormally developed or hypertrophied muscles adjacent to the popliteal fossa. When symptomatic, it most frequently presents with leg cramping while walking or running. We describe the case of an 18-year-old female runner presenting with claudication and exercise intolerance. After MRI was non-diagnostic, diagnostic ultrasound demonstrated that she had functional (Type VI) PAES. She subsequently underwent popliteal artery release surgery. Type VI PAES should be considered in young, healthy patients who present with claudication, particularly athletes

    Subcommittee Report on Campaign Finance

    New Mexico is one of a minority of 13 states that do not limit most campaign contributions. The United States Supreme Court has recognized that such limits may serve a states compelling interest in preventing corruption and the appearance of corruption in the political process. The Supreme Court has also concluded that reasonable contribution limits do not violate the United States Constitution. This report details several options for the Task Force\u27s consideration, as well as the subcommittee\u27s recommendations. In the 2005 Campaign Disclosure Project — Grading State Disclosure Report, New Mexico received a grade of F for its campaign disclosure law. It received an A for its electronic filing program, but accessibility of content and online usability received an F. While New Mexico has a campaign finance law that contains standard provisions found in other states, the results of this report suggest that there is much more that can be done to strengthen our existing legal framework in this area. This report provides some options for consideration.\u2

    Classifying training drills based on movement demands in Australian Football

    Time-motion data was used to classify a selection of training drills. Ten midfielders (age=23.8±1.8yr; height=183.9±3.8cm; mass=83.2±5.0 kg) from an Australian Football League team participated in 17 training drills and four quarters of an official competitive match. Heart rate and time-motion data were collected using Global Positioning and Heart Rate Systems. Cluster analysis of mean distance travelled in the seven velocity zones identified three clusters: 1) game-specific conditioning; 2) skill refining/moderate intensity dominant; and 3) skill refining/low intensity dominant. Differences between the three clusters in distance travelled at the speed zones were confirmed using one-way ANOVA. Differences between clusters were also assessed for number of efforts in velocity zones and percentage time in heart rate zones. When compared to drills with a focus on skill refining or performed on a reduced playing area, drills utilising the entire playing field better replicated the movement characteristics of competitive game play
