Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of malocclusion on the self-esteem of female university students. Methods: The subjects were composed of 67 female university students who showed Class I molar relation, no missing or supernumerary teeth and has had no orthodontic treatment experience. Each subject was evaluated with Rosenberg`s Self-esteem Scale to measure the level of self-esteem and also evaluated the degree of anterior crowding and lip protrusion through model analysis and cephalometric soft tissue profile analysis. Results: The results showed that a protrusive profile and crowding of upper anterior teeth had significant reducing effects on the level of self-esteem. The protrusion and crowding groups showed no significant differences in self-esteem between groups. Conclusions: Malocclusion had significant negative effects on the self-esteem of female university students. Further research to investigate the negative psychological influence of malocclusion and the education of lay people about this influence is necessary. A new strategy for integrating abundant oxygen functional groups into carbon felt electrode for vanadium redox flow batteries

The effects of surface treatment combining corona discharge and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the electrochemical performance of carbon felt electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have been thoroughly investigated. Ahigh concentration of oxygen functional groups has been successfully introduced onto the surface of the carbon felt electrodes by a specially designed surface treatment, which is mainly responsible for improving the energy efficiency of VRFBs. In addition, the wettability of the carbon felt electrodes also can be significantly improved. The energy efficiency of the VRFB cell employing the surface modified carbon felt electrodes is improved by 7% at high current density (148 mA cm(-2)). Such improvement is attributed to the faster charge transfer and better wettability allowed by surface-active oxygen functional groups. Moreover, this method is much more competitive than other surface treatments in terms of processing time, production costs, and electrochemical performance.

Large clusters and hollow microfibers by multicomponent self-assembly of citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles with temperature-responsive amphiphilic dendrimers

Gold clusters with controlled sizes have been prepared by controlled self-assembly of citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with temperature-responsive luminescent amphiphilic dendrimers (Den 40) of oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) core branches and oligo(ethylene oxide) terminal chains. The shape and size of the resultant gold clusters depend strongly on the molar ratio of Den 40 to AuNPs. These gold clusters can further assemble into hollow microfibers decorated with AuNPs, which can be used as a promising substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The formation of spherical gold clusters and hollow microfibers simply by self-assembly of AuNPs and luminescent amphiphilic dendrimers (Den 40) could not only provide some useful insights for producing multifunctional materials via multicomponent self-assembly but also offer promise for potential applications of the self-assemblies in many systems, such as SERS and stimuli-responsive sensors.close2

Neural Signals Related to Outcome Evaluation Are Stronger in CA1 than CA3

We have shown previously that CA1 conveys significant neural signals necessary to update value of the chosen target, namely chosen value and reward signals. To better understand hippocampal neural processes related to valuation, we compared chosen value- and reward-related neural activity between the CA3 and CA1 regions. Single units were recorded with tetrodes from the dorsal CA3 and CA1 regions of rats performing a dynamic foraging task, and chosen value- and reward-related neural activity was estimated using a reinforcement learning model and multiple regression analyses. Neural signals for chosen value and reward converged in both CA3 and CA1 when a trial outcome was revealed. However, these neural signals were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Consequently, neural signals for reward prediction error and updated chosen value were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Together with our previous finding that CA1 conveys stronger value signals than the subiculum, our results raise the possibility that CA1 might play a particularly important role among hippocampal subregions in evaluating experienced events
