We report metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxial growth and structural and photoluminescent characteristics of ZnO nanorods. The nanorods were grown on Al2O3(00.1) substrates at 400 degreesC without employing any metal catalysts usually needed in other methods. Electron microscopy revealed that nanorods with uniform distributions in their diameters, lengths, and densities were grown vertically from the substrates. The mean diameter of the nanorods is as narrow as 25 nm. In addition, x-ray diffraction measurements clearly show that ZnO nanorods were grown epitaxially with homogeneous in-plane alignment as well as a c-axis orientation. More importantly, from photoluminescence spectra of the nanorods strong and narrow excitonic emission and extremely weak deep level emission were observed, indicating that the nanorods are of high optical quality. Pig-to-Nonhuman Primate (NHP) Naked Islet Xenotransplantation

Islet transplantation is an established therapy for selected type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients with severe hypoglycemic unawareness and glycemic liability despite of insulin treatment. However, the donor organ is limited. Porcine islets are the best alternative source to overcome this limitation, and pig-to-nonhuman primate (NHP) naked islet xenotransplantation studies are being performed worldwide. Several studies including our own have presented successful proof-of-concept results based on immunosuppression regimen including the anti-CD154 monoclonal antibody. Particularly, long-term control of diabetes by adult porcine islet transplantation has been demonstrated in five consecutive monkeys, and the longest survival was ~1000 days after transplantation. Currently, pig-to-NHP islet xenotransplantation based on clinically applicable immunosuppression regimen is being pursued. In this chapter, we will describe all the procedures of pig-to-NHP naked islet xenotransplantation: (1) the porcine islet isolation from designated pathogen-free (DPF) miniature pigs, (2) diabetes induction in monkeys, (3) transplantation procedure via the portal vein, (4) immune monitoring comprising humoral and cellular immunity after porcine islet transplantation, and finally (5) liver biopsy and subsequent immunohistochemical procedure in detail

Patterned Si thin film electrodes for enhancing structural stability

A patterned film (electrode) with lozenge-shaped Si tiles could be successfully fabricated by masking with an expanded metal foil during film deposition. Its electrochemical properties and structural stability during the charge-discharge process were examined and compared with those of a continuous (conventional) film electrode. The patterned electrode exhibited a remarkably improved cycleability (75% capacity retention after 120 cycles) and an enhanced structural stability compared to the continuous electrode. The good electrochemical performance of the patterned electrode was attributed to the space between Si tiles that acted as a buffer against the volume change of the Si electrode

Power Limiter with PIN Diode Embedded in Cavity to Minimize Parasitic Inductance

This letter introduces a power limiter that limits the input power to protect the receiver when a large power enters the radio frequency receiver. When the power limiter receives a large power signal, a positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diode is turned on to limit the input power by lowering the impedance. We analyzed the characteristics of the power limiter according to the method of connecting the PIN diode in parallel with the input and output transmission lines of the power limiter. By embedding a PIN diode into the cavity and minimizing the length of the wire, a power limiter was designed and implemented to minimize parasitic inductance. In the S-band, the proposed power limiterā€™s insertion loss was below 0.5 dB, and the reflection loss characteristics were below 15 dB. Furthermore, it achieved an output P1dB of 21.8 dBm at 3.5 GHz
