Current and fluctuation in a two-state stochastic system under non-adiabatic periodic perturbation
We calculate a current and its fluctuation in a two-state stochastic system
under a periodic perturbation. The system could be interpreted as a channel on
a cell surface or a single Michaelis-Menten catalyzing enzyme. It has been
shown that the periodic perturbation induces so-called pump current, and the
pump current and its fluctuation are calculated with the aid of the geometrical
phase interpretation. We give a simple calculation recipe for the statistics of
the current, especially in a non-adiabatic case. The calculation scheme is
based on the non-adiabatic geometrical phase interpretation. Using the Floquet
theory, the total current and its fluctuation are calculated, and it is
revealed that the average of the current shows a stochastic-resonance-like
behavior. In contrast, the fluctuation of the current does not show such
behavior.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Warm needle acupuncture for osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Warm needle acupuncture (WA) is considered a potential intervention in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of WA in the treatment of OA. Systematic review and meta-analysis METHODS: Fourteen databases were searched from their inception until May 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of WA for treating OA were identified. Study selection and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation program were used to assess all included RCTs. A total of 66 RCTs met the inclusion criteria for this review. Most of the included studies had an unclear risk of bias, and the certainty of the evidence was very low. Twenty-four RCTs compared the effects of WA with those of oral drug therapies. Meta-analysis showed superior effects of WA for the total effective rate (risk ratio (RR): 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17 to 1.27, I = 26%, p < 0.001, 24 studies, n = 2278), pain, and function. Eight RCTs compared the effects of WA+drug therapy, and meta-analysis showed favorable effects for the total effective rate (RR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.18 to 1.35, I =0%, p < 0.001, 8 studies, n = 646). Eight RCTs compared the effects of WA and intra-articular sodium hyaluronate (IASH) injection on OA and found equivalent effects of WA on the symptoms of OA. Twenty-eight RCTs compared the effects of WA+IASH injection with those of IASH injection, and meta-analysis showed superior effects of WA+IASH in terms of the total effective rate (RR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.19, I =27.3%, p < 0.001, 25 studies, n = 2208), pain, and function. None of the RCTs reported serious adverse events. WA may have some distinct advantages in the treatment of OA. However, well-designed RCTs with larger sample sizes are needed. Entropic sampling dynamics of the globally-coupled kinetic Ising model
The entropic sampling dynamics based on the reversible information transfer
to and from the environment is applied to the globally coupled Ising model in
the presence of an oscillating magnetic field. When the driving frequency is
low enough, coherence between the magnetization and the external magnetic field
is observed; such behavior tends to weaken with the system size. The time-scale
matching between the intrinsic time scale, defined in the absence of the
external magnetic field, and the extrinsic time scale, given by the inverse of
the driving frequency, is used to explain the observed coherence behavior.Comment: 8 page
ASCA Observation of the New Transient X-ray Pulsar XTE J0111.2-7317 in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The new transient X-ray pulsar XTE J0111.2-7317 was observed with Advanced
Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) on 1998 November 18, a few days
after its discovery with the Proportional Counter Array onboard the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer. The source was detected at a flux level of 3.6x10^-10 erg
cm^-2 s^-1 in the 0.7--10.0 keV band, which corresponds to the X-ray luminosity
of 1.8x10^38 erg s^-1, if a distance of 65 kpc for this pulsar in the Small
Magellanic Cloud is assumed. Nearly sinusoidal pulsations with a period of
30.9497 +/- 0.0004 s were unambiguously detected during the ASCA observation.
The pulsed fraction is low and slightly energy dependent with average value of
\~27%. The energy spectrum shows a large soft excess below ~2 keV when fitted
to a simple power-law type model. The soft excess is eliminated if the spectrum
is fitted to an ``inversely broken power-law'' model, in which photon indices
below and above a break energy of 1.5 keV are 2.3 and 0.8, respectively. The
soft excess can also be described by a blackbody or a thermal bremsstrahlung
when the spectrum above ~2 keV is modeled by a power-law. In these models,
however, the thermal soft component requires a very large emission zone, and
hence it is difficult to explain the observed pulsations at energies below 2
keV. A bright state of the source enables us to identify a weak iron line
feature at 6.4 keV with an equivalent width of 50 +/- 14 eV. Pulse phase
resolved spectroscopy revealed a slight hardening of the spectrum and marginal
indication of an increase in the iron line strength during the pulse maximum.Comment: 8 pages, 5 Figures, to be published in ApJ. Also available at

Fundamental thickness limit of itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO thin films
We report on a fundamental thickness limit of the itinerant ferromagnetic
oxide SrRuO that might arise from the orbital-selective quantum confinement
effects. Experimentally, SrRuO films remain metallic even for a thickness
of 2 unit cells (uc), but the Curie temperature, T, starts to decrease at 4
uc and becomes zero at 2 uc. Using the Stoner model, we attributed the T
decrease to a decrease in the density of states (N). Namely, in the thin
film geometry, the hybridized Ru-d orbitals are terminated by top and
bottom interfaces, resulting in quantum confinement and reduction of N.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
Pattern Formation in a Two-Dimensional Array of Oscillators with Phase-Shifted Coupling
We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional array of oscillators with
phase-shifted coupling. Each oscillator is allowed to interact with its
neighbors within a finite radius. The system exhibits various patterns
including squarelike pinwheels, (anti)spirals with phase-randomized cores, and
antiferro patterns embedded in (anti)spirals. We consider the symmetry
properties of the system to explain the observed behaviors, and estimate the
wavelengths of the patterns by linear analysis. Finally, we point out the
implications of our work for biological neural networks
Narrow Line Cooling and Momentum-Space Crystals
Narrow line laser cooling is advancing the frontier for experiments ranging
from studies of fundamental atomic physics to high precision optical frequency
standards. In this paper, we present an extensive description of the systems
and techniques necessary to realize 689 nm 1S0 - 3P1 narrow line cooling of
atomic 88Sr. Narrow line cooling and trapping dynamics are also studied in
detail. By controlling the relative size of the power broadened transition
linewidth and the single-photon recoil frequency shift, we show that it is
possible to continuously bridge the gap between semiclassical and quantum
mechanical cooling. Novel semiclassical cooling process, some of which are
intimately linked to gravity, are also explored. Moreover, for laser
frequencies tuned above the atomic resonance, we demonstrate momentum-space
crystals containing up to 26 well defined lattice points. Gravitationally
assisted cooling is also achieved with blue-detuned light. Theoretically, we
find the blue detuned dynamics are universal to Doppler limited systems. This
paper offers the most comprehensive study of narrow line laser cooling to date.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figure
Neutrino oscillations in de Sitter space-time
We try to understand flavor oscillations and to develop the formulae for
describing neutrino oscillations in de Sitter space-time. First, the covariant
Dirac equation is investigated under the conformally flat coordinates of de
Sitter geometry. Then, we obtain the exact solutions of the Dirac equation and
indicate the explicit form of the phase of wave function. Next, the concise
formulae for calculating the neutrino oscillation probabilities in de Sitter
space-time are given. Finally, The difference between our formulae and the
standard result in Minkowski space-time is pointed out.Comment: 13 pages, no figure
