    Most of the large-scale millers in Ghana provide a loan to the farmers under the agreement that the farmers will bring their paddy to them. This paper examines the effect of this interlinkage on the efficiency of rice milling. A quadratic cost function was estimated, and capacity utilization was calculated in relation to money lending.     Rice Miller Cluster in Ghana and Its Effects on Efficiency and Quality Improvement

    This paper investigates the roles of industrial cluster on the efficiency of rice milling and the improvement of milled rice quality. The data were obtained in Kumasi area, central Ghana because the enhancement of domestic rice production is a urgent policy issue in this country, but little attention has been paid to the roles of clusters in post-harvest processing and marketing. Among 63 rice millers interviewed in the Kumasi area, 24 millers form a few clusters in the city of Kumasi, while others are scattered over 25 satellite towns around Kumasi, which enables us to examine the effect of the cluster. Regression analyses reveal that rice millers in the Kumasi clusters tend to adopt more advanced technology, and that the innovation increases milling efficiency and improves 1 milling quality. Moreover, it is found from the estimation of price determination functions that in the Kumasi clusters milled rice price is affected by milling quality namely the content of whole grain, while in the rural areas there is no clear relationship between milling quality and the price. This indicates that the clusters, probably because of the concentrated transactions, will foster informal quality grading system, which is critical for the market development.     Duodenal Carcinoma from a Duodenal Diverticulum Mimicking Pancreatic Carcinoma

    An 81-year-old man was found to have a pancreatic head tumor on abdominal computed tomography (CT) performed during a follow-up visit for sigmoid colon cancer. The tumor had a diameter of 35mm on the CT scan and was diagnosed as pancreatic head carcinoma T3N0M0. The patient was treated with pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. Histopathological examination showed that the tumor had grown within a hollow structure, was contiguous with a duodenal diverticulum, and had partially invaded the pancreas. Immunohistochemistry results were as follows:CK7 negative, CK20 positive, CD10 negative, CDX2 positive, MUC1 negative, MUC2 positive, MUC5AC negative, and MUC6 negative. The tumor was diagnosed as duodenal carcinoma from the duodenal diverticulum. Preoperative imaging showed that the tumor was located in the head of the pancreas and was compressing the common bile duct, thus making it appear like pancreatic cancer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second report of a case of duodenal carcinoma from a duodenal diverticulum mimicking pancreatic carcinoma

    We examine low energy limit of U(3)L×U(3)RU(3)_L\times U(3)_R chiral theory of mesons through integrating out fields of vector and axial-vector mesons. The effective lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons at O(p4)O(p^4) has been obtained, and five low energy coupling constants Li(i=1,2,3,9,10)L_i(i=1,2,3,9,10) have been revealed.     Membrane-damaging action of Clostridium perfringens alpha-toxin on phospholipid liposomes

    AbstractThe effect of Clostridium perfringens alpha-toxin on multilamellar liposomes prepared from various phospholipids and cholesterol was investigated. The toxin induced carboxyfluorescein leakage from liposomes composed of the choline-containing phospholipids such as egg-yolk phosphatidylcholine and bovine brain sphingomyelin in a dose-dependent manner, but did not induce leakage from those liposomes composed of bovine brain phosphatidylethanol amine, egg-yolk phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylglycerol. The toxin-induced carboxyfluorescein leakage from egg-yolk phosphatidylcholine liposomes was increased by addition of divalent cations. The toxin induced carboxyfluorescein release from liposomes composed of phosphatidylcholine containing unsaturated fatty acyl residues or shorter chain length saturated fatty acyl residues (12 or 14 carbon atoms), but did not induce such release from liposomes composed of phosphatidylcholine containing saturated fatty acyl residues of between 16 and 20 carbon atoms. Furthermore, the toxin-induced carboxyfluorescein release decreased with increasing chain length of the acyl residues of phosphatidylcholine used. The toxin bound to liposomes composed of phospholipids which are hydrolyzed by the toxin, but did not bind to those composed of phospholipids which are not attacked by the toxin. The toxin-induced carboxyfluorescein release from liposomes composed of dipalmitoleoyl-l-α-phosphatidyl-choline and cholesterol and the toxin binding to the liposomes decreased with decreasing cholesterol contents. These observations suggest that the specific binding site formed by the choline-containing phospholipids and cholesterol, and membrane fluidity in liposomes are essential for the membrane-damaging activity of alpha-toxin

    Na-ion dynamics in Quasi-1D compound NaV2O4

    We have used the pulsed muon source at ISIS to study high-temperature Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic antiferromagnet NaV2O4. By performing systematic zero-field and longitudinal-field measurements as a function of temperature we clearly distinguish that the hopping rate increases exponentially above Tdiff=250 K. The data is well fitted to an Arrhenius type equation typical for a diffusion process, showing that the Na-ions starts to be mobile above Tdiff . Such results makes this compound very interesting for the tuning of Q1D magnetism using atomic-scale ion-texturing through the periodic potential from ordered Na-vacancies. Further, it also opens the door to possible use of NaV2O4 and related compounds in energy related applications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (2014
