Ad- and desorption of Rb atoms on a gold nanofilm measured by surface plasmon polaritons
Hybrid quantum systems made of cold atoms near nanostructured surfaces are
expected to open up new opportunities for the construction of quantum sensors
and for quantum information. For the design of such tailored quantum systems
the interaction of alkali atoms with dielectric and metallic surfaces is
crucial and required to be understood in detail. Here, we present real-time
measurements of the adsorption and desorption of Rubidium atoms on gold
nanofilms. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) are excited at the gold surface and
detected in a phase sensitive way. From the temporal change of the SPP phase
the Rubidium coverage of the gold film is deduced with a sensitivity of better
than 0.3 % of a monolayer. By comparing the experimental data with a Langmuir
type adsorption model we obtain the thermal desorption rate and the sticking
probability. In addition, also laser-induced desorption is observed and

Cold atoms near superconductors: Atomic spin coherence beyond the Johnson noise limit
We report on the measurement of atomic spin coherence near the surface of a
superconducting niobium wire. As compared to normal conducting metal surfaces,
the atomic spin coherence is maintained for time periods beyond the Johnson
noise limit. The result provides experimental evidence that magnetic near field
noise near the superconductor is strongly suppressed. Such long atomic spin
coherence times near superconductors open the way towards the development of
coherently coupled cold atom / solid state hybrid quantum systems with
potential applications in quantum information processing and precision force

Toward Empirical Constraints on the Global Redshifted 21 cm Brightness Temperature During the Epoch of Reionization
Preliminary results are presented from a simple, single-antenna experiment
designed to measure the all-sky radio spectrum between 100 and 200 MHz. The
system used an internal comparison-switching scheme to reduce non-smooth
instrumental contaminants in the measured spectrum to 75 mK. From the
observations, we place an initial upper limit of 450 mK on the relative
brightness temperature of the redshifted 21 cm contribution to the spectrum due
to neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of
reionization, assuming a rapid transition to a fully ionized IGM at a redshift
of 8. With refinement, this technique should be able to distinguish between
slow and fast reionization scenarios. To constrain the duration of reionization
to dz > 2, the systematic residuals in the measured spectrum must be reduced to

Alternative Mathematical Technique to Determine LS Spectral Terms
We presented an alternative computational method for determining the
permitted LS spectral terms arising from electronic configurations. This
method makes the direct calculation of LS terms possible. Using only basic
algebra, we derived our theory from LS-coupling scheme and Pauli exclusion
principle. As an application, we have performed the most complete set of
calculations to date of the spectral terms arising from electronic
configurations, and the representative results were shown. As another
application on deducing LS-coupling rules, for two equivalent electrons, we
deduced the famous Even Rule; for three equivalent electrons, we derived a new

N-Terminal Pro–B-Type Natriuretic Peptide in the Emergency Department: The ICON-RELOADED Study
Background
Contemporary reconsideration of diagnostic N-terminal pro–B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) cutoffs for diagnosis of heart failure (HF) is needed.
Objectives
This study sought to evaluate the diagnostic performance of NT-proBNP for acute HF in patients with dyspnea in the emergency department (ED) setting.
Methods
Dyspneic patients presenting to 19 EDs in North America were enrolled and had blood drawn for subsequent NT-proBNP measurement. Primary endpoints were positive predictive values of age-stratified cutoffs (450, 900, and 1,800 pg/ml) for diagnosis of acute HF and negative predictive value of the rule-out cutoff to exclude acute HF. Secondary endpoints included sensitivity, specificity, and positive (+) and negative (−) likelihood ratios (LRs) for acute HF.
Results
Of 1,461 subjects, 277 (19%) were adjudicated as having acute HF. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for diagnosis of acute HF was 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90 to 0.93; p < 0.001). Sensitivity for age stratified cutoffs of 450, 900, and 1,800 pg/ml was 85.7%, 79.3%, and 75.9%, respectively; specificity was 93.9%, 84.0%, and 75.0%, respectively. Positive predictive values were 53.6%, 58.4%, and 62.0%, respectively. Overall LR+ across age-dependent cutoffs was 5.99 (95% CI: 5.05 to 6.93); individual LR+ for age-dependent cutoffs was 14.08, 4.95, and 3.03, respectively. The sensitivity and negative predictive value for the rule-out cutoff of 300 pg/ml were 93.9% and 98.0%, respectively; LR− was 0.09 (95% CI: 0.05 to 0.13).
Conclusions
In acutely dyspneic patients seen in the ED setting, age-stratified NT-proBNP cutpoints may aid in the diagnosis of acute HF. An NT-proBNP <300 pg/ml strongly excludes the presence of acute HF
An efficient approach for spin-angular integrations in atomic structure calculations
A general method is described for finding algebraic expressions for matrix
elements of any one- and two-particle operator for an arbitrary number of
subshells in an atomic configuration, requiring neither coefficients of
fractional parentage nor unit tensors. It is based on the combination of second
quantization in the coupled tensorial form, angular momentum theory in three
spaces (orbital, spin and quasispin), and a generalized graphical technique.
The latter allows us to calculate graphically the irreducible tensorial
products of the second quantization operators and their commutators, and to
formulate additional rules for operations with diagrams. The additional rules
allow us to find graphically the normal form of the complicated tensorial
products of the operators. All matrix elements (diagonal and non-diagonal with
respect to configurations) differ only by the values of the projections of the
quasispin momenta of separate shells and are expressed in terms of completely
reduced matrix elements (in all three spaces) of the second quantization
operators. As a result, it allows us to use standard quantities uniformly for
both diagona and off-diagonal matrix elements
Exploiting the UMLS Metathesaurus for extracting and categorizing concepts representing signs and symptoms to anatomically related organ systems
AbstractObjectiveTo develop a method to exploit the UMLS Metathesaurus for extracting and categorizing concepts found in clinical text representing signs and symptoms to anatomically related organ systems. The overarching goal is to classify patient reported symptoms to organ systems for population health and epidemiological analyses.Materials and methodsUsing the concepts’ semantic types and the inter-concept relationships as guidance, a selective portion of the concepts within the UMLS Metathesaurus was traversed starting from the concepts representing the highest level organ systems. The traversed concepts were chosen, filtered, and reviewed to obtain the concepts representing clinical signs and symptoms by blocking deviations, pruning superfluous concepts, and manual review. The mapping process was applied to signs and symptoms annotated in a corpus of 750 clinical notes.ResultsThe mapping process yielded a total of 91,000 UMLS concepts (with approximately 300,000 descriptions) possibly representing physical and mental signs and symptoms that were extracted and categorized to the anatomically related organ systems. Of 1864 distinct descriptions of signs and symptoms found in the 750 document corpus, 1635 of these (88%) were successfully mapped to the set of concepts extracted from the UMLS. Of 668 unique concepts mapped, 603 (90%) were correctly categorized to their organ systems.ConclusionWe present a process that facilitates mapping of signs and symptoms to their organ systems. By providing a smaller set of UMLS concepts to use for comparing and matching patient records, this method has the potential to increase efficiency of information extraction pipelines
Psychiatric Disorders in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department for Minor Injury
BACKGROUND: Thirty-five percent of all Emergency Department (ED) visits are for physical injury.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the proportion of patients presenting to an ED for physical injury with a history of or current Axis I/II psychiatric disorders and to compare patients with a positive psychiatric history, a negative psychiatric history, and a current psychiatric disorder.
METHODS: A total of 275 individuals were selected randomly from adults presenting to the ED with a documented anatomic injury but with normal physiology. Exclusion criteria were: injury in the previous 2 years or from medical illness or domestic violence; or reported treatment for major depression or psychoses. Psychiatric history and current disorders were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), a structured psychiatric interview. Three groups (positive psychiatric history, negative psychiatric history, current psychiatric disorder) were compared using Chi-square and analysis of variance.
RESULTS: The sample was composed of men (51.6%) and women (48.4%), with 57.1% Black and 39.6% White. Out of this sample, 103 patients (44.7%) met DSM-IV criteria for a positive psychiatric history (n = 80) or a current psychiatric disorder (n = 43). A past history of depression (24%)exceeded the frequency of a history of other disorders (anxiety, 6%; alcohol use/abuse, 14%; drug use/abuse, 15%; adjustment, 23%; conduct disorders, 14%). Current mood disorders (47%) also exceeded other current diagnoses (anxiety, 9%; alcohol, 16%; drug, 7%; adjustment, 7%; personality disorders, 12%).
