Supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries are expected in a Lambda CDM cosmology given that most (if not all) massive galaxies contain a massive black hole at their center. So far, however, direct evidence for such binaries has been elusive. We use cross-correlation to search for temporal velocity shifts in the MgII broad emission lines of 0.36 < z < 2 quasars with multiple observations in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For ~ 10^9 Msun BHs in SMBH binaries, we are sensitive to velocity drifts for binary separations of ~ 0.1 pc with orbital periods of ~100 years. We find seven candidate sub-pc--scale binaries with velocity shifts > 3.4 sigma ~ 280 km/s, where sigma is our systematic error. Comparing the detectability of SMBH binaries with the number of candidates (N < 7), we can rule out that most 10^9 Msun BHs exist in ~ 0.03-0.2 pc scale binaries, in a scenario where binaries stall at sub-pc scales for a Hubble time. We further constrain that < one-third of quasars host SMBH binaries after considering gas-assisted sub-pc evolution of SMBH binaries, although this result is very sensitive to the assumed size of the broad line region. We estimate the detectability of SMBH binaries with ongoing or next-generation surveys (e.g., BOSS, Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph), taking into account the evolution of the sub-parsec binary in circumbinary gas disks. These future observations will provide longer time baselines for searches similar to ours and may in turn constrain the evolutionary scenarios of SMBH binaries.Comment: Resubmitted to ApJ after referee's comments. 21 pages, 9 figure

The formation of ordered bismuth nanowire arrays within mesoporous silica templates

    Get PDF
Bismuth nanowire arrays have been synthesized within the pores of ordered mesoporous silica templates using a supercritical fluid (SCF) inclusion technique. The formation of nanowires within the mesopores was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), N2 adsorption experiments and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of the bismuth nanowire arrays occurred through the initial binding of the bismuth precursor to the inner walls of the mesoporous channels, forming bismuth crystal seeds, which subsequently developed into wire-like structures. By varying the concentration of the bismuth precursor in the SCF phase, the loading of bismuth nanocrystals within the mesoporous channels can be controlled. The effect that temperature had on the formation of bismuth nanocrystals within the mesopores was also investigated. The highest loading of bismuth nanocrystals inside the mesopores was obtained at reaction temperatures near the critical point of toluene

Yttrium-90 Radioembolization in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Who have Previously Received Sorafenib

Purpose: Yttrium-90 radioembolization (RE) is a locoregional therapy option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Sorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor used in HCC that can potentially affect the efficacy of RE by altering tumor vascularity or suppressing post-irradiation angiogenesis. The safety and efficacy of sorafenib followed by RE has not been previously reported. Materials and Methods: Patients with HCC who received RE after sorafenib were included in this retrospective review. Overall survival, toxicity, and maximal radiographic response and necrosis criteria were examined. Results: Ten patients (15 RE administrations) fit the inclusion criteria. All were Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage C. Median follow-up was 16.5 weeks. Median overall survival and radiographic progression-free survival were 30 and 28 weeks, respectively. Significant differences in overall survival were seen based on Child-Pugh class (p = 0.002) and radiographic response (p = 0.009). Three patients had partial response, six had stable disease, and one had progressive disease. Grade 1 or 2 acute fatigue, anorexia, and abdominal pain were common. Three patients had Grade 3 ascites in the setting of disease progression. Two patients had Grade 3 biochemical toxicity. One patient was sufficiently downstaged following RE and sorafenib to receive a partial hepatectomy. Conclusion: Yttrium-90 RE in patients with HCC who have received sorafenib demonstrate acceptable toxicity and rates of radiographic response. However, the overall survival is lower than that reported in the literature on RE alone or sorafenib alone. This may be due in part to more patients in this study having advanced disease compared to these other study populations. Larger prospective studies are needed to determine whether the combination of RE and sorafenib is superior to either therapy alone

Performance of Polymerase Chain Reaction Techniques Detecting Perforin in the Diagnosis of Acute Renal Rejection: A Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Studies in the past have shown that perforin expression is up-regulated during acute renal rejection, which provided hopes for a non-invasive and reliable diagnostic method to identify acute rejection. However, a systematic assessment of the value of perforin as a diagnostic marker of acute renal rejection has not been performed. We conducted this meta-analysis to document the diagnostic performance of perforin mRNA detection and to identify potential variables that may affect the performance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Relevant materials that reported the diagnostic performance of perforin mRNA detection in acute renal rejection patients were extracted from electronic databases. After careful evaluation of the studies included in this analysis, the numbers of true positive, true negative, false positive and false negative cases of acute renal rejection identified by perforin mRNA detection were gathered from each data set. The publication year, sample origin, mRNA quantification method and housekeeping gene were also extracted as potential confounding variables. Fourteen studies with a total of 501 renal transplant subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The overall performance of perforin mRNA detection was: pooled sensitivity, 0.83 (95% confidence interval: 0.78 to 0.88); pooled specificity, 0.86 (95% confidence interval: 0.82 to 0.90); diagnostic odds ratio, 28.79 (95% confidence interval: 16.26 to 50.97); and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curves value, 0.9107±0.0174. The univariate analysis of potential variables showed some changes in the diagnostic performance, but none of the differences reached statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Despite inter-study variability, the test performance of perforin mRNA detected by polymerase chain reaction was consistent under circumstances of methodological changes and demonstrated both sensitivity and specificity in detecting acute renal rejection. These results suggest a great diagnostic potential for perforin mRNA detection as a reliable marker of acute rejection in renal allograft recipients

Importance It is uncertain whether intravenous methylprednisolone improves outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large-vessel occlusion (LVO) undergoing endovascular thrombectomy. Objective To assess the efficacy and adverse events of adjunctive intravenous low-dose methylprednisolone to endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke secondary to LVO. Design, Setting, and Participants This investigator-initiated, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was implemented at 82 hospitals in China, enrolling 1680 patients with stroke and proximal intracranial LVO presenting within 24 hours of time last known to be well. Recruitment took place between February 9, 2022, and June 30, 2023, with a final follow-up on September 30, 2023.InterventionsEligible patients were randomly assigned to intravenous methylprednisolone (n = 839) at 2 mg/kg/d or placebo (n = 841) for 3 days adjunctive to endovascular thrombectomy. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary efficacy outcome was disability level at 90 days as measured by the overall distribution of the modified Rankin Scale scores (range, 0 [no symptoms] to 6 [death]). The primary safety outcomes included mortality at 90 days and the incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage within 48 hours. Results Among 1680 patients randomized (median age, 69 years; 727 female [43.3%]), 1673 (99.6%) completed the trial. The median 90-day modified Rankin Scale score was 3 (IQR, 1-5) in the methylprednisolone group vs 3 (IQR, 1-6) in the placebo group (adjusted generalized odds ratio for a lower level of disability, 1.10 [95% CI, 0.96-1.25]; P = .17). In the methylprednisolone group, there was a lower mortality rate (23.2% vs 28.5%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.84 [95% CI, 0.71-0.98]; P = .03) and a lower rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (8.6% vs 11.7%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.74 [95% CI, 0.55-0.99]; P = .04) compared with placebo. Conclusions and Relevance Among patients with acute ischemic stroke due to LVO undergoing endovascular thrombectomy, adjunctive methylprednisolone added to endovascular thrombectomy did not significantly improve the degree of overall disability.Trial RegistrationChiCTR.org.cn Identifier: ChiCTR210005172

Magnetohydrodynamics of Accretion Disks in Cataclysmic Variables

Angular momentum transport in the accretion disks of cataclysmic variables (CVs) is a crucial ingredient of driving the evolution of CVs and is believed to account for the observed episodic outbursts in dwarf novae. However, the physical mechanisms of driving angular momentum transport in CV disks are not well understood yet. In this thesis, the angular momentum transport driven by the spiral shocks and the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is thoroughly studied using a series of global hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations conducted with Athena++. Spiral shocks are a possible accretion mechanism in cold quiescence state when the CV disk may be too cool and neutral for the MRI to operate. We perform global two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations where we found mass accretion is driven by deposition of negative angular momentum carried by the waves through shock dissipation. The effective viscosity parameter alpha_eff is 0.02–0.05 when the disk Mach number is < 10. Spiral shocks are found very sensitive to the size and Mach number of the disk: they are stronger with larger disk sizes or lower Mach numbers. We also apply the spiral shock analysis to circumplanetary disks (CPDs) and found spiral shocks can contribute significantly to the angular momentum transport and energy dissipation in CPDs yielding alpha_eff ∼0.001−0.02. In hot outburst state the CV disk is ionized so MRI and spiral shocks both drive angular momentum transport. We perform global three-dimensional MHD simulations of CV disks to investigate the relative importance of spiral shocks and MRI. Our steady-state solutions indicate that the relative importance in driving angular momentum transport of spiral shocks and MRI is mostly determined by the gas Mach number and the seed magnetic field strength, and is independent of the seed field geometry. While the mass accretion rate in steady-state disks is always equal to the mass supply rate, the steady-state αeff is larger when the seed magnetic field has vertical components or the flow has stronger magnetization

Efficient learning-based blur removal method based on sparse optimization for image restoration.

In imaging systems, image blurs are a major source of degradation. This paper proposes a parameter estimation technique for linear motion blur, defocus blur, and atmospheric turbulence blur, and a nonlinear deconvolution algorithm based on sparse representation. Most blur removal techniques use image priors to estimate the point spread function (PSF); however, many common forms of image priors are unable to exploit local image information fully. In this paper, the proposed method does not require models of image priors. Further, it is capable of estimating the PSF accurately from a single input image. First, a blur feature in the image gradient domain is introduced, which has a positive correlation with the degree of blur. Next, the parameters for each blur type are estimated by a learning-based method using a general regression neural network. Finally, image restoration is performed using a half-quadratic optimization algorithm. Evaluation tests confirmed that the proposed method outperforms other similar methods and is suitable for dealing with motion blur in real-life applications

SEARCHING FOR BINARY SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES VIA VARIABLE BROAD EMISSION LINE SHIFTS: LOW BINARY FRACTION

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHs) are expected to result from galaxy mergers, and thus are natural byproducts (and probes) of hierarchical structure formation in the universe. They are also the primary expected source of low-frequency gravitational wave emission. We search for binary BHs using time-variable velocity shifts in broad Mg II emission lines of quasars with multi-epoch observations. First, we inspect velocity shifts of the binary SMBH candidates identified in Ju et al., using Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra with an additional epoch of data that lengthens the typical baseline to similar to 10 yr. We find variations in the line of sight velocity shifts over 10 yr that are comparable to the shifts observed over 1-2 yr, ruling out the binary model for the bulk of our candidates. We then analyze 1438 objects with eight-year median time baselines, from which we would expect to see velocity shifts > 1000 km s(-1) from sub-parsec binaries. We find only one object with an outlying velocity of 448 km s-1, indicating-based on our modeling-that less than or similar to 1% (the value varies with different assumptions) of SMBHs that are active as quasars reside in binaries with similar to 0.1 pc separations. Binaries either sweep rapidly through these small separations or stall at larger radii
