Drought conditions in 2012 were some of the most severe in recent history. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of drought on quality, quantity, and theoretical ethanol yield (TEY) of three bioenergy feedstocks, corn stover, mixed grasses from Conservation Reserve Program lands, and Miscanthus × giganteus. To assess drought effects on these feedstocks, samples from 2010 (minimal to no drought) and 2012 (severe drought) were compared from multiple locations in the US. In all feedstocks, drought significantly increased extractives and reduced structural sugars and lignin; subsequently, TEYs were reduced 10–15%. Biomass yields were significantly reduced for M. × giganteus and mixed grasses. When reduction in quality and quantity were combined, TEYs decreased 26–59%. Drought negatively affected biomass quality and quantity that resulted in significant TEY reductions. Such fluctuations in biomass quality and yield may have significant consequences for developing lignocellulosic biorefineries

Gluteal Muscle Activation During Common Yoga Poses
# Background
Approximately 24% of physical therapists report regularly using yoga to strengthen major muscle groups. Although clinicians and athletes often use yoga as a form of strength training, little is known about the activation of specific muscle groups during yoga poses, including the gluteus maximus and medius.
# Hypothesis/Purpose
The purpose of this study was to measure gluteus maximimus and gluteus medius activation via electromyography (EMG) during five common yoga poses. A secondary purpose of the current study was to examine differences in muscle activation between sexes and experience levels.
# Study Design

# Methods
Thirty-one healthy males and females aged 18-35 years were tested during five yoga poses performed in a randomized order. Surface EMG electrodes were placed on subjects’ right gluteus maximus and gluteus medius. Subjects performed the poses on both sides following a maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) test for each muscle. All yoga pose EMG data were normalized to the corresponding muscle MVIC data.
# Results
Highest gluteus maximus activation occurred during Half Moon Pose on the lifted/back leg (63.3% MVIC), followed by the stance/front leg during Half Moon Pose (61.7%), then the lifted/back leg during Warrior Three Pose (46.1%). Highest gluteus medius activation occurred during Half Moon Pose on the lifted/back leg (41.9%), followed by the lifted/back leg during the Warrior Three Pose (41.6%). A significant difference was found in %MVIC of gluteus medius activity between male and female subjects (p = 0.026), and between experienced and inexperienced subjects (p = 0.050), indicating higher activation among males and inexperienced subjects, respectively.
# Conclusion
Half Moon Pose and Warrior Three Pose elicited the highest activation for both the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius. Higher gluteus medius activation was seen in males and inexperienced subjects compared to their female and experienced counterparts.

A Multidisciplinary Approach toward Identification of Antibiotic Scaffolds for Acinetobacter baumannii
Research efforts to discover potential new antibiotics for Gram-negative bacteria suffer from high attrition rates due to the synergistic action of efflux systems and the limited permeability of the outer membrane (OM). One strategy to overcome the OM permeability barrier is to identify small molecules that are natural substrates for abundant OM channels and use such compounds as scaffolds for the design of efficiently permeating antibacterials. Here we present a multidisciplinary approach to identify such potential small-molecule scaffolds. Focusing on the pathogenic bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii, we use OM proteomics to identify DcaP as the most abundant channel during infection in rodents. The X-ray crystal structure of DcaP reveals a trimeric, porin-like structure and suggests that dicarboxylic acids are potential transport substrates. Electrophysiological experiments and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations confirm this notion and provide atomistic information on likely permeation pathways and energy barriers for several small molecules, including a clinically relevant β-lactamase inhibitor

Evaluation of a rapid syphilis test in an emergency department setting in Detroit, Michigan
BACKGROUND: Syphilis transmission can be prevented by prompt diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary infection. We evaluated the performance of a point-of-care rapid syphilis treponemal test (RST) in an emergency department (ED) setting. METHODS: Between June 2015 and April 2016, men aged 18-34 years seeking services in a Detroit ED, and with no history of syphilis, were screened for syphilis with the RST, rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test, and Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (TP-PA). A positive reference standard was both a reactive RPR and a reactive TP-PA. We compared test results in self-reported MSM to non-MSM. RESULTS: Among 965 participants, 10.9% of RSTs were reactive in MSM and only 1.5% in non-MSM (p\u3c0.001). Sensitivity of the RST was 76.9% and specificity was 99.0% (PPV 50.0%) compared to the positive reference standard. Three discordant specimens found negative with the RST but positive with the reference standard had an RPR titer of 1:1, compared with 10 specimens with concordant positive results that had a median RPR titer of 1:16. The RST sensitivity was 50.0% (PPV 68.4%) compared to the TP-PA test alone. Among men seeking care in an ED, the RST detected 76.9% of participants with a reactive RPR and TP-PA. CONCLUSIONS: The RST detected all of the participants with an RPR titer \u3e 1:2 but less than 20% of participants with a positive TP-PA and negative RPR. The RST was useful to detect a high proportion of participants with an active syphilis in an urban ED.
