Double radiative pion capture on hydrogen and deuterium and the nucleon's pion cloud
We report measurements of double radiative capture in pionic hydrogen and
pionic deuterium. The measurements were performed with the RMC spectrometer at
the TRIUMF cyclotron by recording photon pairs from pion stops in liquid
hydrogen and deuterium targets. We obtained absolute branching ratios of for hydrogen and for deuterium, and
relative branching ratios of double radiative capture to single radiative
capture of for hydrogen
and for
deuterium. For hydrogen, the measured branching ratio and photon energy-angle
distributions are in fair agreement with a reaction mechanism involving the
annihilation of the incident on the cloud of the target proton.
For deuterium, the measured branching ratio and energy-angle distributions are
qualitatively consistent with simple arguments for the expected role of the
spectator neutron. A comparison between our hydrogen and deuterium data and
earlier beryllium and carbon data reveals substantial changes in the relative
branching ratios and the energy-angle distributions and is in agreement with
the expected evolution of the reaction dynamics from an annihilation process in
S-state capture to a bremsstrahlung process in P-state capture. Lastly, we
comment on the relevance of the double radiative process to the investigation

WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts
Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar
scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two
and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of
the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order
corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral
Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed
ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering
shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its
two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and
the plausibility of detection is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Spitzer, Near-Infrared, and Submillimeter Imaging of the Relatively Sparse Young Cluster, Lynds 988e
We present {\it Spitzer} images of the relatively sparse, low luminosity
young cluster L988e, as well as complementary near-infrared (NIR) and
submillimeter images of the region. The cluster is asymmetric, with the western
region of the cluster embedded within the molecular cloud, and the slightly
less dense eastern region to the east of, and on the edge of, the molecular
cloud. With these data, as well as with extant H data of stars
primarily found in the eastern region of the cluster, and a molecular CO
gas emission map of the entire region, we investigate the distribution of
forming young stars with respect to the cloud material, concentrating
particularly on the differences and similarities between the exposed and
embedded regions of the cluster. We also compare star formation in this region
to that in denser, more luminous and more massive clusters already investigated
in our comprehensive multi-wavelength study of young clusters within 1 kpc of

RAD sequencing resolves fine-scale population structure in a benthic invertebrate: implications for understanding phenotypic plasticity.
The field of molecular ecology is transitioning from the use of small panels of classical genetic markers such as microsatellites to much larger panels of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) generated by approaches like RAD sequencing. However, few empirical studies have directly compared the ability of these methods to resolve population structure. This could have implications for understanding phenotypic plasticity, as many previous studies of natural populations may have lacked the power to detect genetic differences, especially over micro-geographic scales. We therefore compared the ability of microsatellites and RAD sequencing to resolve fine-scale population structure in a commercially important benthic invertebrate by genotyping great scallops (Pecten maximus) from nine populations around Northern Ireland at 13 microsatellites and 10 539 SNPs. The shells were then subjected to morphometric and colour analysis in order to compare patterns of phenotypic and genetic variation. We found that RAD sequencing was superior at resolving population structure, yielding higher Fst values and support for two distinct genetic clusters, whereas only one cluster could be detected in a Bayesian analysis of the microsatellite dataset. Furthermore, appreciable phenotypic variation was observed in size-independent shell shape and coloration, including among localities that could not be distinguished from one another genetically, providing support for the notion that these traits are phenotypically plastic. Taken together, our results suggest that RAD sequencing is a powerful approach for studying population structure and phenotypic plasticity in natural populations

Life in the intertidal: cellular responses, methylation and epigenetics
1.Phenotypic plasticity is essential for the persistence of organisms under changing environmental conditions but the control of the relevant cellular mechanisms including which genes are involved and the regulation of those genes remains unclear. One way to address this issue is to evaluate links between gene expression, methylation and phenotype using transplantation and common garden experiments within genetically homogeneous populations.
2.This approach was taken using the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna. In this species, two distinct phenotypes are associated with the intertidal and subtidal zones. The in situ gene expression and methylation profiles of intertidal and subtidal cohorts were directly compared before and after reciprocal transplantation as well as after a common garden acclimation to aquarium conditions for 9 months.
3.Expression profiles showed significant modulation of cellular metabolism to habitat zone with the intertidal profile characterised by transcription modules for antioxidant production, DNA repair and the cytoskeleton reflecting the need to cope with continually fluctuating and stressful conditions including wave action, UV irradiation and desiccation.
4.Transplantation had an effect on gene expression. The subtidal animals transplanted to the intertidal zone modified their gene expression patterns towards that of an intertidal profile. In contrast, many of the antioxidant genes were still differentially expressed in the intertidal animals several weeks after transplantation into the relatively benign subtidal zone.
5.Furthermore, a core of genes involved in antioxidation was still preferentially expressed in intertidal animals at the end of the common garden experiment. Thus, acclimation in an aquarium tank for 9 months did not completely erase the intertidal gene expression profile.
6.Significant methylation differences were measured between intertidal and subtidal animals from the wild and after transplantation, which were reduced on common garden acclimation. This suggests that epigenetic factors play an important role in physiological flexibility associated with environmental niche
A comparison of two cases of low-latitude thundersnow

Both cases had synoptic-scale origins, but also featured smaller-scale influences (e. g. orographic lift and elevated instability).The first event occurred in the Southern Hemisphere and was a late winter case that developed under the influence of underlying orography. Lightning was plentiful in that event (94 cloud-to-ground flashes in the region), but snow accumulations were not significant. Lightning flashes of negative polarity dominated this case, with a mean peak amplitude of -43.2 kA. The second event was a Northern Hemisphere case of elevated convection, with frontogenesis beneath an extended layer of potential instability. Appreciable lightning occurred with this event as well (706 cloud-to-ground flashes in the region), and snow accumulations were significant over a broad area. Lightning flashes of negative polarity dominated this case also, with a mean peak amplitude of -23.7 kA. Each of these events is worthy of further scrutiny, as studies of such storms do not appear often in the literature. Indeed, such warm, subtropical regions are often unprepared for the effects of just a little snow or ice accumulation. Future forecasters can anticipate better such anomalous events by looking for these broad features: 1) significant and well-defined synoptic-scale weather systems at low latitudes, 2) a strong baroclinic zone with a well-defined (≥60 ms-1) jet structure aloft, 3) cold air of appreciable depth and areal extent drawn much closer to the equator than is typical, and 4) a moist neutral to conditionally unstable layer above the frontal zone
Therapy with high-dose Interleukin-2 (HD IL-2) in metastatic melanoma and renal cell carcinoma following PD1 or PDL1 inhibition
Abstract
Background
Metastatic melanoma (mM) and renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) are often treated with anti-PD-1 based therapy, however not all patients respond and further therapies are needed. High dose interleukin-2 (HD IL-2) can lead to durable responses in a subset of mM and mRCC patients. The efficacy and toxicity of HD IL-2 therapy following anti-PD-1 or anti-PD-L1 therapy have not yet been explored.
Methods
Reports on mM and mRCC patients who had received HD IL-2 after PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibition were queried from the PROCLAIMSM database. Patient characteristics, toxicity and efficacy were analyzed.
Results
A total of 57 patients (40 mM, 17 mRCC) were treated with high dose IL-2 after PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibition and had data recorded in the PROCLAIM database. The best overall response rate to HD IL-2 was 22.5% for mM (4 complete response (CR), 5 partial responses (PRs)) and 24% for mRCC (2 CRs, 2 PRs). The toxicity related to HD IL-2 observed in these patients was similar to that observed in patients treated with HD IL-2 without prior checkpoint blockade. One patient who had received prior PD-L1 blockade developed drug induced pneumonitis with HD IL-2 requiring steroid therapy.
Conclusion
In this retrospective analysis, HD IL-2 therapy displayed durable antitumor activity in mM and mRCC patients who progressed following treatment with PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibition. The toxicities were generally manageable and consistent with expectations from HD IL-2 but physicians should watch for immune related toxicities such as pneumonitis. This analysis supports the development of randomized prospective trials to assess the proper sequencing and combination of immune checkpoint blockade and cytokine therapy.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/148134/1/40425_2019_Article_522.pd
