On perfect and quasiperfect dominations in graphs
A subset S ¿ V in a graph G = ( V , E ) is a k -quasiperfect dominating set (for k = 1) if every vertex not in S is adjacent to at least one and at most k vertices in S . The cardinality of a minimum k -quasiperfect dominating set in G is denoted by ¿ 1 k ( G ). Those sets were first introduced by Chellali et al. (2013) as a generalization of the perfect domination concept and allow us to construct a decreasing chain of quasiperfect dominating numbers n = ¿ 11 ( G ) = ¿ 12 ( G ) = ... = ¿ 1 ¿ ( G ) = ¿ ( G ) in order to indicate how far is G from being perfectly dominated. In this paper we study properties, existence and realization of graphs for which the chain is short, that is, ¿ 12 ( G ) = ¿ ( G ). Among them, one can find cographs, claw-free graphs and graphs with extremal values of ¿ ( G ).Postprint (published version
Comparing two antibacterial treatments for bioceramic coatings at short culture times
Plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings were employed industrially for decades to improve osteointegration of articular implants, but many studies have warned about the problems inherent to this procedure (mechanical properties, harmful phases). Consequently, a combination of hydroxyapatite with TiO2 sprayed by high velocity oxy-fuel spray was considered in this study. As infection after joint replacement surgery is one of the most critical concerns when considering implant performance, it is necessary to study possible ways to reduce or eliminate it. Two coating treatments were chosen for this study: addition of a percentage of ZnO and immersion in gentamicin for 24 h. Furthermore, three bacteria were considered: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The evolution of bacteria viability in solution was measured at 0, 2, and 4 h; and plate assays were performed to study antibacterial effects by diffusion. The results show an important antibacterial effect of the as-sprayed coating, attributed to the presence of -OH radicals on the surface. The presence of ZnO did not have any additional influence on bacteria viability, but gentamicin-treated samples showed an improvement in antibacterial behavior for Gram-negative bacteria in solution, as well as a bactericidal effect in diffusion conditions
Dominating 2- broadcast in graphs: complexity, bounds and extremal graphs
Limited dominating broadcasts were proposed as a variant of dominating broadcasts, where the broadcast function is upper bounded. As a natural extension of domination, we consider dominating 2-broadcasts along with the associated parameter, the dominating 2-broadcast number. We prove that computing the dominating 2-broadcast number is a NP-complete problem, but can be achieved in linear time for trees. We also give an upper bound for this parameter, that is tight for graphs as large as desiredPostprint (published version

Pathogenic and molecular diversity in highly virulent populations of the parasitic weed Orobanche cumana (sunflower broomrape) from Europe
The definitive version is available at www3.interscience.wiley.comThe parasitic weed Orobanche cumana (sunflower broomrape) constrains sunflower production in eastern and southern Europe and in the Middle East. Although genetic resistance is the most effective control method, new parasite races evolve overcoming sunflower resistance. In this work, highly virulent populations of O. cumana were analysed for pathogenicity and genetic diversity. The virulence of 11 populations from Hungary, Romania, Spain and Turkey was assessed and compared after infection of sunflower inbred lines to differentiate races of the parasite under glasshouse conditions. Molecular diversity among and within 27 parasite populations was studied by RAPD-PCR, UPGMA and amova analyses. Highly virulent race F was identified in Hungary, Spain and Turkey. The most virulent race (G) was also found in Turkey. The molecular analysis among highly virulent populations of O. cumana identified four molecular clusters, respectively, grouping populations from Central Spain, Hungary, South Spain and Turkey. The genetic homogeneity within parasite populations was confirmed, since no molecular divergences were found within them. This work constitutes the first geographical study of O. cumana together with pathogenicity and molecular traits inherent to each geographical group, and provides useful information for possible phylogenetic analyses of O. cumana. In addition, molecular markers associated with geographical origin could be developed and used as diagnostic tools to track new broomrape introductions into areas free of virulent races where they might represent a threat to sunflower production. This research was supported by the Ramón Areces Spanish Foundation, Spanish National Institute for Agricultural Research (RTA04-048), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (PIE200940I120) and Spanish Ministry for Science and Education (HH2005-0017). A nonlocal 1-Laplacian problem and median values
In this paper, we study solutions to a nonlocal 1-Laplacian equation. We introduce two notions of solution and prove that the weaker of the two concepts is equivalent to a nonlocal median value property, where the median is determined by a measure related to J. We also show that solutions in the stronger sense are nonlocal analogues of local least gradient functions, in the sense that they minimize a nonlocal functional. In addition, we prove that solutions in the stronger sense converge to least gradient solutions when the kernel J is appropriately rescaled
