Influence of Embankments with Parapets on the Cross-Wind Turbulence Intensity at the Contact Wire of Railway Overheads

Winds as an environmental factor can cause significant difficulties for the railway system operation. The railway overhead has been particularly vulnerable to cross-winds related problems, such as development of undamped oscillations due to galloping phenomenon. The installation of windbreaks to decrease the aerodynamic loads on the train can affect the loads on railway overheads triggering cable galloping. One essential parameter to indicate the influence of the parapet wake on the catenary contact wire is the turbulence intensity. In this paper the results of an experimental analysis of the turbulence intensity due to the presence of parapets carried out in a wind tunnel are reported. Embankments equipped with different parapets have been tested and turbulence intensity has been measured at both contact wire locations, windward and leeward. The relative influence of the parapets is measured through a reduced turbulence intensity, defined as the ratio between the turbulence intensity measured with parapet and the turbulence intensity in the case without any parapet on the embankment. In general the reduced turbulence intensity increases as the height of the parapet increases

Stacking-dependent electronic structure of trilayer graphene resolved by nanospot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The crystallographic stacking order in multilayer graphene plays an important role in determining its electronic structure. In trilayer graphene, rhombohedral stacking (ABC) is particularly intriguing, exhibiting a flat band with an electric-field tunable band gap. Such electronic structure is distinct from simple hexagonal stacking (AAA) or typical Bernal stacking (ABA), and is promising for nanoscale electronics, optoelectronics applications. So far clean experimental electronic spectra on the first two stackings are missing because the samples are usually too small in size (um or nm scale) to be resolved by conventional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here by using ARPES with nanospot beam size (NanoARPES), we provide direct experimental evidence for the coexistence of three different stackings of trilayer graphene and reveal their distinctive electronic structures directly. By fitting the experimental data, we provide important experimental band parameters for describing the electronic structure of trilayer graphene with different stackings

Biofilms in Focus : A Threat to Foods

    Get PDF
The world of food microbiology, and by extension that of food safety, has evolved significantly at the turn of the century. In fact, from carrying out controls on the presence or absence of pathogens in finished products, we have gone on to try to detect, not only where the pathogens are found, to apply the appropriate corrective measures to the problem, but also to look beyond. At this point, the number of publications related to biofilms, considered as forms of resistance of microorganisms in food facilities, has increased significantly. Thus, according to PubMed, since 2010, 1494 articles have been published on biofilms and food safety. Therefore, the study of biofilms is being considered as an important element to improve food safety conditions nowadays

We study library classifications criticisms from a poststructuralist and pragmatist point of view that rejects the idea of universality in knowledge organization systems. From this perspective, we analize the seminal texts on library classifications criticisms and conclude that the seek of neutrality in some of these texts is not only an impossible goal but also a contradiction in the representation of different cultures. Therefore, we suggest the commitment with the goals and the recognition of bias in library classifications as an important device for achieving a transcultural ethics in knowledge organization and representation

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate on nanoparticulated Bi-Sn-Sb electrodes

    Get PDF
Human activities during the last century have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), and the impacts of climate change around the world are becoming more damaging. Therefore, scientific research is needed to mitigate the consequences of atmospheric CO2, and, among others, the electrochemical CO2 conversion to useful chemicals is one of the most interesting alternatives. Herein, different Bi, Sn and Sb systems were synthesised as nanoparticles, supported on carbon (Vulcan XC-72R) and finally used to manufacture electrodes. The Bi-Sn-Sb nanoparticulated systems and their corresponding electrodes were characterised by TEM, XPS, ICP-OES and SEM. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate was performed in an electrochemical H-type cell in a CO2-saturated KHCO3 and KCl solution. The Bi-Sn-Sb electrodes exhibited good activity and selectivity for the CO2 reduction towards formate. Particularly, Bi95Sb05/C and Bi80Sn10Sb10/C electrodes showed improved stability compared to previous works, keeping values of formate efficiency over 50 % after 24 h.This research was funded by the MICINN Spanish Ministry, through the projects CTQ2016-76231-C2-2-R (AEI/FEDER, UE) and PID2019-108136RB-C32

A simplified approach to determine aerodynamic damping of railway overheads

The railway overhead (or catenary) is the system of cables responsible for providing electric current to the train. This system has been reported as wind-sensitive (Scanlon et al., 2000), and particularly to the occurrence of galloping phenomena. Galloping phenomena of the railway overhead consists of undamped cable oscillations triggered by aerodynamic forces acting on the contact wire. As is well known, aerodynamic loads on the contact wire depends on the incident flow mean velocity and the angle of attack. The presence of embankments or hills modifies both vertical velocities profiles and angles of attack of the flow (Paiva et al., 2009). The presence of these cross-wind related oscillations can interfere with the safe operation of the railway service (Johnson, 1996). Therefore a correct modelling of the phenomena is required to avoid these unwanted oscillations
