Conditional variables of the scientific production process of the agricultural research centers of embrapa
Abstract
The scientific production at the agricultural research centers of Embrapa was described in order to verify the relationship between scientific productivity and some independent variables. A questionary was sent to 163 researchers (100%) in three agricultural research centers of Embrapa with 71,7% of return rate (117 individual responding): from the Cerrados Agricultural and Cattle Raising Research Center (CPAC), located in Planaltina, Federal District (Center-West Region) replied 35 researchers; from the Semiarid Tropical Agricultural and Cattle Raising Research Center (CPATSA), located in Petrolina, PE (Northeast Region) replied 31 researchers and from the Humid Tropical Agricultural and Cattle Raising Research Center (CPATU), located in Belém, PA (North Region) replied 51 researchers. Data from the scientific production, a dependent variable, was crossed with the independent variables: the increase of age, academic qualification, time of qualification, time spent on research, the understanding (total or partial) of the English language, personal journals subscriptions and affiliation with scientific associations in Brazil were determinant factors on the process of scientific production. On the other hand, it was found that administrative style did not play a significant role on the process of the scientific productivity

METÁSTASE DE ADENOCARCINOMA EM GLÂNDULA APÓCRINA EM UM CÃO
The apocrine gland adenocarcinoma is rarely reported in dogs, common in dogs and having no sex predisposition. They usually present a single lump reaching up 10 cm in diameter. In dogs, the thoracic and pelvic limbs are the common sites. Generally, the apocrine gland neoplasms have a benign behavior; metastasis can occur through lymphatic and blood dissemination when they are malignant. We report the case of a 16-year-old, uncastrated, male Poodle dog. The client reported a lesion in the right ear that had purulent and bloody discharge for 30 days, however, on physical examination, a small mass was observed in the right thoracic limb together with a reactive right subscapular lymph node. Samples were collected from both sites for cytological examination, which had an inconclusive result. Nodulectomy was performed on the right thoracic limb, subscapular lyphadenectomy and auricular nodulectomy. The histopathological analysis revealed an apocrine gland adenocarcinoma in the thoracic limb with metastasis to the cervical lymph node and sebaceous epithelioma in the auricular lesion. The client refused the chemotherapy protocol proposed and, the patient died 30 days after the surgical procedure.O adenocarcinoma de glândula apócrina raramente é relatado em cães, acometendo principalmente animais idosos e não tendo propensão entre machos ou fêmeas.

Gastroprotective Mechanisms of the Monoterpene 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol).
Recently, our research group identified and reported 1,8-cineole (CIN), a monoterpene that naturally occur in many aromatic plants, as one of the major constituent of the essential oil from leaves of Hyptis martiusii (EOHM), as well as characterized the gastroprotective action of this oil. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of action involved in the antiulcer and healing activity of CIN, in order to confirm its correlation with the gastroprotective effect of EOHM. Wistar rats were exposed to different protocols (acute ulceration, gastrointestinal motility and antisecretory activity). In addition, were determinated the involvement of nitric oxide and sulphydryl groups; the levels of gastric mucus, lipid peroxidation, sulphydryl groups and myeloperoxidase activity. The healing ability was evaluated by acetic acid-induced chronic ulcer and histological and immunohistochemical analysis (PCNA, Ki-67 and BrdU). The treatment with CIN inhibited ethanol-, ethanol/HCl- and indomethacin-induced gastric lesions. The highest doses of CIN inhibited gastric emptying, but did not affect intestinal transit. CIN (100 mg/kg) reduced the volume of basal but not stimulated acid secretion. CIN increased levels of mucus (89.3%), prevented depletion of -SH groups (62.6%) and reduced the level of lipid peroxidation (55.3%) and myeloperoxidase activity (59.4%) in the gastric mucosa. In chronic ulcer model, CIN reduced in 43.1% the gastric area lesion, promoted significant regeneration and restoration of the levels of mucus in glandular cells as confirmed by histological analysis; and promoted increase in cell proliferation as evidenced by reactivity for PCNA, Ki-67 and BrdU. This findings demonstrate the role of 1,8-cineole as an important ulcer healing agent and indicate the involvement of antioxidant and cytoprotective mechanisms in the gastroprotective effect of compound. This study also provides evidence that 1,8-cineole is related to the gastroprotective effect of the essential oil of Hyptis martiusii
Gastroprotective and ulcer healing effects of essential oil of Hyptis martiusii Benth. (Lamiaceae).
Hyptis martiusii Benth. is an aromatic plant found in abundance in northeastern Brazil that is used in ethnomedicine to treat gastric disorders. The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of action involved in the gastroprotection of the essential oil of Hyptis martiusii (EOHM) and to evaluate its healing capacity. Wistar rats were exposed to different protocols and subsequently were treated with 1% Tween-80 aqueous solution (negative control), pantoprazole, carbenoxolone, N-acetylcysteine (depending on the specificity of each model) or EOHM. The antisecretory activity (basal or stimulated) was determined using the pyloric ligature method. The gastroprotective action of nitric oxide and sulphydryl groups (-SH groups), as well as the quantification of adherent mucus and the levels of malondialdehyde and -SH groups in gastric mucosa, were evaluated using ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model. The healing ability was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer model and histological and immunohistochemical analysis (HE, PAS and PCNA). EOHM (400 mg/kg) reduced the volume and acidity of gastric secretion stimulated by histamine and pentagastrin. The gastroprotective effect of EOHM involves the participation of endogenous sulfhydryl groups. EOHM increased mucus production (54.8%), reduced levels of MDA (72.5%) and prevented the depletion of -SH groups (73.8%) in the gastric mucosa. The treatment with EOHM reduced in 70.3% the gastric lesion area, promoting significant regeneration of the gastric mucosa, as confirmed by histological analysis and analysis of proliferating cell nuclear antigen. The results show that gastroprotective effect of EOHM is mediated by cytoprotective and antioxidant mechanisms and by their antisecretory activity, and suggest that the essential oil of Hyptis martiusii is a promising candidate for the treatment of gastric ulcers
Phenolic Compounds Present Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi Influence the Lowering of Blood Pressure in Rats
This study identified two phenolic compounds in Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi fruits: naringenin (first report in this species) and gallic acid. Their structures were elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data (1H-, 13C-NMR) and a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. A high content of phenolics (659.21 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of sample—Folin-Ciocalteau method) and total flavonoids (140.69 mg of rutin equivalents/g of sample—aluminum chloride method) were quantified in S. terebinthifolius, as well as high antioxidant activity (77.47%—2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH method). The antihypertensive activity related to its phenolic content was investigated. After intravenous infusion in Wistar rats, these phenolics significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the systolic, median, and diastolic arterial pressures of individuals. The rotarod test was performed to determine the mechanism of action of the sample vasorelaxant effect. It was found that its action exceeded that of the positive control used (diazepam). This confirmed the vasodilatory activity exerted by S. terebinthifolius fruits is related to the phenolic compounds present in the plant, which are potent antioxidants and inhibit oxidative stress, mainly in the central nervous system
Economic Feasibility Assessment of the Thermal Catalytic Process of Wastes: Açaí Seeds (<em>Euterpe oleracea</em>) and Scum from Grease Traps
In this work, a techno-economic assessment of the production of bio-oil, coke and gas, via thermo-catalytic pyrolysis followed by distillation, is accomplished. The raw materials were two solid wastes: lipid-based material (residual fat/scum from a fat retention box from the University Restaurant at the Federal University of Pará—UFPA) and a lignin-cellulosic material of açaí seed (Euterpe oleracea Mart.). From the literature, a review is made of the physicochemical analysis of the raw materials, of the bio-oil, and of the chemical composition of the biofuels produced (kerosene, light diesel, and heavy diesel). The bio-oil yields for each experiment of pyrolysis and distillation are also presented and compared with the literature. The economic indicators for the evaluation of the most viable cracking (pyrolysis) and distillation process of bio-oils were: (a) the simple payback criterion, (b) discounted payback, (c) net present value (NPV), (d) internal rate of return (IRR), and (e) index of profitability (IP). The analysis of the indicators showed the economic viability of the lipid-based material and unfeasibility for the açai seed (Euterpe oleracea Mart.). The breakeven point obtained was 1.28 USD/L and the minimum fuel selling price (MFSP) obtained in this work for the biofuels was 1.34 USD/L). The sensibility analysis demonstrated that the pyrolysis and distillation yields are the most important variables to affect the minimum fuel selling price (MFSP)
