The compatriot pride. Discourse, ideology and banal nationalism in "El País"

    Get PDF
This paper presents a sociological analysis of content from newspaper El País through which we explain the case of what we’ve called the “compatriot pride”, namely, the exportation of the na-tional identity beyond the state frontiers and the pride-feeling that it's pretend to reproduce through the information in the own country -Spain, in this case. We’ve did this with the different theoretical tools that Michael Billig offers with his concept of “banal nationalism”, and many others concepts from the discourse analysis and rhetoric. What this study pretends is to enrich the (what we think it is) work of the sociologist: break up with common sense and pull out the unseen prac-tices from the oblivion

This work has been developed as part of the Endocrinology and Metabolism student’s laboratory formation from Biology degree at the University of Murcia. Endocrinology and Metabolism is an elective oneterm course that is taught in the fourth year (4.5 ECTS) for "Biosanitary and Biotechnology" intensification. The course focuses on the study of global and intermediary human metabolism and hormonal regulation, both under normal and special situations. It is our objective to get undergraduate students of Endocrinology and Metabolism with the importance of hormonal diurnal fluctuations in endocrine systems through their involvement in an innovative research program. In addition, with the participation of PhD student in this program, we try to improve their skills in innovative teaching. In humans cortisol circadian rhythm peaks in the morning and shows the lowest levels during the midnight. This fluctuation of cortisol plasma level is reflected in saliva, allowing a simple, non invasive and unstressful sample collection. The influence of different factors, exercise, schedule and weekend shifts, on the rhythmic pattern of cortisol has been studied along various years.Campus Mare Nostrum, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Universidad de Murcia, Región de Murci

Agriculture in NW Iberia during the Bronze Age: a review of archaeobotanical data

    Get PDF
The wide and diverse array of palaeoenvironmental studies that were carried out in Northwestern Iberia indicate that the Bronze Age corresponds to a phase of great landscape changes. Strong deforestation and erosion episodes are key-features and they are usually assumed to be anthropogenic. The archaeological and archaeobotanical records demonstrate that these trends are coincident with modi!cations on settlement pattern and agricultural systems. This work consists on a thorough revision of carpological data from 19 Bronze Age sites in order to understand agricultural practices in the region in this time period. Results reveal the increasing relevance of Panicum miliaceum and decreasing presence of naked barley which contrast with the previous periods. Carpological remains are not available in Early Bronze Age sites.Middle Bronze Age crops include naked and hulled forms of barley (Hordeum spp.) and wheat (Triticum spp.). Only one site provided occasional grains of Panicum miliaceum. Non-cereal crops are rare and comprise Linum, Papaver, Pisum sativum and Vicia faba. Still, there are few Middle Bronze Age sites with crop macroremains. Late Bronze Age sites with carpological remains of crops are more abundant but no newcrop is added. This is the phase when Panicummiliaceum became a conspicuous crop in regional agricultural strategies. Overall, a small diversity of pulses is recorded throughout the Bronze Age, contrasting with other Iberian regions. Acorns (Quercus) are the onlywild fruits consistently present in the archaeological sites and they probably had some relevance within the regional subsistence. It was possible to detect changes on settlement and agricultural levels and suggest how these are related to environmental and social changes. It is argued that agricultural productivity increased and pits were the main storage facilities used by Bronze Age communities. Although these structures are abundant in several sites, caution is neededwhile interpreting themand their !lls. Only in one site – Freixo – remains of cropswere found in primary deposition in a storage pit. Increasing agricultural productivity, including functionally diverse winter and spring crops seems to have been connected to settlement diversi!cation. This trend may have led to a more complementary and profuse use of local resources, enhancing the anthropogenic changes in the landscape mentioned above. This was a further step in the territorialisation process thatwould eventually lead to the complex scenario recorded in the Iron Age.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fire and brief human occupations in Iberia during MIS 4: Evidence from Abric del Pastor (Alcoy, Spain)

    Get PDF
There is a relatively low amount of Middle Paleolithic sites in Europe dating to MIS 4. Of the few that exist, several of them lack evidence for anthropogenic fire, raising the question of how this period of global cooling may have affected the Neanderthal population. The Iberian Peninsula is a key area to explore this issue, as it has been considered as a glacial refugium during critical periods of the Neanderthal timeline and might therefore yield archaeological contexts in which we can explore possible changes in the behaviour and settlement patterns of Neanderthal groups during MIS 4. Here we report recent data from Abric del Pastor, a small rock shelter in Alcoy (Alicante, Spain) with a stratified deposit containing Middle Palaeolithic remains. We present absolute dates that frame the sequence within MIS 4 and multi-proxy geoarchaeological evidence of in situ anthropogenic fire, including microscopic evidence of in situ combustion residues and thermally altered sediment. We also present archaeostratigraphic evidence of recurrent, functionally diverse, brief human occupation of the rock shelter. Our results suggest that Neanderthals occupied the Central Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula during MIS 4, that these Neanderthals were not undergoing climatic stress and they were habitual fire users. This research was funded by a Leakey Foundation General Grant, Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities Projects HAR2008-06117/HIST and HAR2015-68321-P, Junta de Castilla y León-FEDER Project BU235P18, the LabEx Sciences Archéologiques de Bordeaux (LaScArBx ANR-10-LABX-52) and ERC Consolidator Grant ERC-CoG-2014.
