A random hierarchical lattice: the series-parallel graph and its properties
We consider a sequence of random graphs constructed by a hierarchical procedure. The construction replaces existing edges by pairs of edges in series or parallel with probability and respectively. We investigate the effective resistance across the graphs, first-passage percolation on the graphs and the Cheeger constants of the graphs as the number of edges tends to infinity. Laparoscopic versus open colorectal resection for cancer and polyps: A cost-effectiveness study
Methods: Participants were recruited in 2006-2007 in a district general hospital in the south of England; those with a diagnosis of cancer or polyps were included in the analysis. Quality of life data were collected using EQ-5D, on alternate days after surgery for 4 weeks. Costs per patient, from a National Health Service perspective (in British pounds, 2006) comprised the sum of operative, hospital, and community costs. Missing data were filled using multiple imputation methods. The difference in mean quality adjusted life years and costs between surgery groups were estimated simultaneously using a multivariate regression model applied to 20 imputed datasets. The probability that laparoscopic surgery is cost-effective compared to open surgery for a given societal willingness-to-pay threshold is illustrated using a cost-effectiveness acceptability curve
Present-day plate motions
A data set comprising 110 spreading rates, 78 transform fault azimuths and 142 earthquake slip vectors was inverted to yield a new instantaneous plate motion model, designated RM2. The mean averaging interval for the relative motion data was reduced to less than 3 My. A detailed comparison of RM2 with angular velocity vectors which best fit the data along individual plate boundaries indicates that RM2 performs close to optimally in most regions, with several notable exceptions. On the other hand, a previous estimate (RM1) failed to satisfy an extensive set of new data collected in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is shown that RM1 incorrectly predicts the plate kinematics in the South Atlantic because the presently available data are inconsistent with the plate geometry assumed in deriving RM1. It is demonstrated that this inconsistency can be remedied by postulating the existence of internal deformation with the Indian plate, although alternate explanations are possible

Homogenization induced by chaotic mixing and diffusion in an oscillatory chemical reaction
A model for an imperfectly mixed batch reactor with the chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid (CDIMA) reaction, with the mixing being modelled by chaotic advection, is considered. The reactor is assumed to be operating in oscillatory mode and the way in which an initial spatial perturbation becomes homogenized is examined. When the kinetics are such that the only stable homogeneous state is oscillatory then the perturbation is always entrained into these oscillations. The rate at which this occurs is relatively insensitive to the chemical effects, measured by the Damkohler number, and is comparable to the rate of homogenization of a passive contaminant. When both steady and oscillatory states are stable, spatially homogeneous states, two possibilities can occur. For the smaller Damkohler numbers, a localized perturbation at the steady state is homogenized within the background oscillations. For larger Damkohler numbers, regions of both oscillatory and steady behavior can co-exist for relatively long times before the system collapses to having the steady state everywhere. Reducing CO2 Emissions in the Upper Midwest: Technology, Resources, Economics, and Policy
We develop scenarios for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity sector in the upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Manitoba) by 80% relative to 1990 levels. The report has three major components: 1) an inventory of CO2 emissions from all fossil fuel combustion in the region from 1960-2001, subdividing by economic sector and specific electricity generating station; 2) an evaluation of all electricity resources in the region and all technologies for utilizing them, taking into account the overall scale of the resource, technology costs, and other issues that influence the selection of a certain technology; and 3) the development of a simulation model to examine the impact of various factors (policies, prices, technologies, resources) on the regional electricity supply and its emissions from 2005-2055.Environmental Economics and Policy,
Analysis of the Hydrogen-rich Magnetic White Dwarfs in the SDSS
We have calculated optical spectra of hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs with
magnetic field strengths between 1 MG and 1000 MG for temperatures between 7000
K and 50000 K. Through a least-squares minimization scheme with an evolutionary
algorithm, we have analyzed the spectra of 114 magnetic DAs from the SDSS (95
previously published plus 14 newly discovered within SDSS, and five discovered
by SEGUE). Since we were limited to a single spectrum for each object we used
only centered magnetic dipoles or dipoles which were shifted along the magnetic
dipole axis. We also statistically investigated the distribution of

Distributional energy momentum tensor of the extended Kerr geometry
We generalize previous work on the energy-momentum tensor-distribution of the
Kerr geometry by extending the manifold structure into the negative mass
region. Since the extension of the flat part of the Kerr-Schild decomposition
from one sheet to the double cover develops a singularity at the branch surface
we have to take its non-smoothness into account. It is however possible to find
a geometry within the generalized Kerr-Schild class that is in the

A domain-specific analysis system for examining nuclear reactor simulation data for light-water and sodium-cooled fast reactors
Building a new generation of fission reactors in the United States presents
many technical and regulatory challenges. One important challenge is the need
to share and present results from new high-fidelity, high-performance
simulations in an easily usable way. Since modern multiscale, multi-physics
simulations can generate petabytes of data, they will require the development
of new techniques and methods to reduce the data to familiar quantities of
interest (e.g., pin powers, temperatures) with a more reasonable resolution and
size. Furthermore, some of the results from these simulations may be new
quantities for which visualization and analysis techniques are not immediately
available in the community and need to be developed.
This paper describes a new system for managing high-performance simulation
results in a domain-specific way that naturally exposes quantities of interest
for light water and sodium-cooled fast reactors. It describes requirements to
build such a system and the technical challenges faced in its development at
all levels (simulation, user interface, etc.). An example comparing results
from two different simulation suites for a single assembly in a light-water
reactor is presented, along with a detailed discussion of the system's
