Plasmon-enhanced Infrared Spectroscopy Based on Metasurface Absorber with Vertical Nanogap

In this study, we introduce a sensing platform based on a plasmonic metasurface absorber (MA) with a vertical nanogap for the ultra- sensitive detection of monolayer molecules. The vertical nanogap of the MA, where the extremely high near-field is uniformly dis- tributed and exposed to the external environment, is formed by an under-cut structure between a metallic cross nanoantenna and themirror layer. The accessible sensing area and the enhanced near-field of the MA further enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhancedinfrared absorption for the target molecule of 1-octadecanethiol. To provide strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and plas- monic resonance, the design parameters of the MA with a vertical nanogap are numerically designed

Evolution of rubisco complex small subunit transit peptides from algae to plants

Chloroplasts evolved from a free-living cyanobacterium acquired by the ancestor of all photosynthetic eukaryotes, including algae and plants, through a single endosymbiotic event. During endosymbiotic conversion, the majority of genes in the endosymbiont were transferred to the host nucleus and many of the proteins encoded by these genes must therefore be transported into the chloroplast after translation in the cytosol. Chloroplast-targeted proteins contain a targeting signal, named the transit peptide (TP), at the N-terminus. However, the evolution of TPs is not well understood. In this study, TPs from RbcS (rubisco small subunit) were compared between lower and higher eukaryotes. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii RbcS (CrRbcS) TP was non-functional in Arabidopsis. However, inclusion of a critical sequence motif, FP-RK, from Arabidopsis thaliana RbcS (AtRbcS) TP allowed CrRbcS TP to deliver proteins into plant chloroplasts. The position of the FP-RK motif in CrRbcS TP was critical for function. The QMMVW sequence motif in CrRbcS TP was crucial for its transport activity in plants. CrRbcS TPs containing additional plant motifs remained functional in C. reinhardtii. These results suggest that TPs evolved by acquiring additional sequence motifs to support protein targeting to chloroplasts during evolution of land plants from algae.113Ysciescopu

Entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial education and performance

Purpose - Korean economy is demanding to change from an industrial society to an entrepreneurial society. It is asking for a generational change from the preexisting paradigms of such as labor consciousness, the concept of work and company management. Entrepreneurship is one of the key elements that will lead to a successful business performance under highly uncertain business conditions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and business performance. Also, the authors look for the role of entrepreneurship education in the influence of entrepreneurial orientation on financial and nonfinancial business performance. Design/methodology/approach - To accomplish the purpose of this study, the authors carried out a survey targeting nascent entrepreneurs and total early-stage entrepreneurs with less than seven years of experience. Based on the Miller’s (1983) definition, a group of questions for entrepreneurial orientation, similar to Covin and Slevin (1989), were developed. Findings - First, among the subfactors of entrepreneurial orientation, it was clear that innovative progressiveness affected nonfinancial business performance. Second, risk-taking propensity did not influence both financial business performance and nonfinancial business performance. Third, entrepreneurship education had no connection with entrepreneurial orientation or business performance. Practical implications - Nonfinancial business performances are related with long-term goals and growth potential. Innovative proactiveness affects nonfinancial business performance. Thus, entrepreneurs should look for ways to promote their innovative proactiveness. Entrepreneurship education for experienced entrepreneurs is not as effective as that for students. Originality/value - In the authors’ study, survey questionnaires were sent to 200 nascent and total early-stage entrepreneurs searching for business angel investments or entrepreneurship consultants in Korea. A total of 180 entrepreneurs answered the survey questions online. There are not so many valid studies examining the effect of entrepreneurship education for nascent and total early-stage entrepreneurs in Korea

Solution-processed germanium nanowire-positioned Schottky solar cells

Germanium nanowire (GeNW)-positioned Schottky solar cell was fabricated by a solution process. A GeNW-containing solution was spread out onto asymmetric metal electrodes to produce a rectifying current flow. Under one-sun illumination, the GeNW-positioned Schottky solar cell yields an open-circuit voltage of 177 mV and a short-circuit current of 19.2 nA. Schottky and ohmic contacts between a single GeNW and different metal electrodes were systematically investigated. This solution process may provide a route to the cost-effective nanostructure solar architecture

What Questions do People Ask on a Human Papillomavirus Website? A Comparative Analysis of Public and Private Questions

    Get PDF
Objective: In 2004, we launched the question and answer (Q&A) section on a human papillomavirus (HPV) website (www.hpvkorea.org) that provides ample and regularly updated information about HPV. The purpose of this study is to collect data pertaining to questions posed on this website about HPV and its related diseases and analyze the type of questions and frequency before and after introduction of HPV vaccine in Korea. Using these results, we intend to determine the clinical and practical implications for doctors treating HPV and for HPV website providers
