Hamiltonian formulation of SL(3) Ur-KdV equation
We give a unified view of the relation between the KdV, the mKdV, and
the Ur-KdV equations through the Fr\'{e}chet derivatives and their inverses.
For this we introduce a new procedure of obtaining the Ur-KdV equation, where
we require that it has no non-local operators. We extend this method to the
KdV equation, i.e., Boussinesq(Bsq) equation and obtain the hamiltonian
structure of Ur-Bsq equationin a simple form. In particular, we explicitly
construct the hamiltonian operator of the Ur-Bsq system which defines the
poisson structure of the system, through the Fr\'{e}chet derivative and its
inverse.Comment: 12 pages, KHTP-93-03 SNUTP-93-2
Effectiveness of Two Keyboarding Instructional Approaches on the Keyboarding Speed, Accuracy, and Technique of Elementary Students
Background: Keyboarding skill development is important for elementary students. Limited research exists to inform practice on effective keyboarding instruction methods.
Method: Using a quasi-experimental design, we examined the effectiveness of Keyboarding Without Tears® (n = 786) in the experimental schools compared to the control schools who used the district standard instructional approach of free web-based activities (n = 953) on improving keyboarding skills (speed, accuracy, and technique) in elementary students.
Results: The results showed significant improvements in keyboarding speed and accuracy in all schools for all grades favoring the experimental schools compared to the control schools. Significant differences in improvements in keyboarding technique were found with large effect sizes favoring the experimental schools for kindergarten to the second grade and small effect sizes favoring the control schools for the third to fifth grade.
Conclusion: Professionals involved in assisting with keyboarding skill development in children are recommended to begin training in these skills in early elementary grades, especially to assist in proper keyboarding technique development. While using free web-based activities are beneficial to improving keyboarding speed and accuracy, as well as keyboarding technique, using a developmentally-based curriculum, such as Keyboarding Without Tears®, may further enhance improvements in the keyboarding skills of elementary students
A Critical Analysis of Structural Contradictions in Open and Distance Higher Education Using Cultural-Historical Activity Theory
Drawing upon cultural-historical activity theory, this research analyzed the structural contradictions existing in a variety of educational activities among a group of alienated adult students in open and distance higher education
A cultural-historical activity theory investigation of contradictions in open and distance higher education among alienated adult learners in Korea National Open University
Drawing upon cultural-historical activity theory, this research analyzed the structural contradictions existing in a variety of educational activities among a group of alienated adult students in Korea National Open University (KNOU). Despite KNOU’s quantitative development in student enrollment, the contradictions shed light on how the institution’s top-down, bureaucratic pedagogical system collided with individual expectations and needs. In particular, the participants’ critical viewpoints demonstrate the incompatible social roles that the open and distance higher education institution plays in Korean society. For example, while KNOU contributes to extending higher education opportunities for those who have unmet educational needs, the value of the KNOU degree has not been socially acknowledged since there is little, if any, competition in the entrance process. This study also documents how these contradictions were culturally and historically embedded in the participants’ distance higher education activities. Given the persistent contradictions, the research findings illuminate that KNOU’s efficiency-oriented model has not effectively facilitated the students’ learning as its distance higher education system is inevitably based on a compromise between a competitive, quality curriculum and the efficient extension of audiences
Towards an Interaction-based Integration of MKM Services into End-User Applications
The Semantic Alliance (SAlly) Framework, first presented at MKM 2012, allows
integration of Mathematical Knowledge Management services into typical
applications and end-user workflows. From an architecture allowing invasion of
spreadsheet programs, it grew into a middle-ware connecting spreadsheet, CAD,
text and image processing environments with MKM services. The architecture
presented in the original paper proved to be quite resilient as it is still
used today with only minor changes.
This paper explores extensibility challenges we have encountered in the
process of developing new services and maintaining the plugins invading
end-user applications. After an analysis of the underlying problems, I present
an augmented version of the SAlly architecture that addresses these issues and
opens new opportunities for document type agnostic MKM services.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Deterministic amplification of Schroedinger cat states in circuit quantum electrodynamics
We propose a dynamical scheme for deterministically amplifying photonic
Schroedinger cat states based on a set of optimal state-transfers. The scheme
can be implemented in strongly coupled qubit-cavity systems and is well suited
to the capabilities of state of the art superconducting circuits. The ideal
analytical scheme is compared with a full simulation of the open
Jaynes-Cummings model with realistic device parameters. This amplification tool
can be utilized for practical quantum information processing in non-classical
continuous-variable states.Comment: A revised manuscript has 6 figure
Neutrino masses and mixing from S4 flavor twisting
We discuss a neutrino mass model based on the S4 discrete symmetry where the
symmetry breaking is triggered by the boundary conditions of the bulk
right-handed neutrino in the fifth spacial dimension. While the symmetry
restricts bare mass parameters to flavor-diagonal forms, the viable mixing
angles emerge from the wave functions of the Kaluza-Klein modes which carry
symmetry breaking effect. The magnitudes of the lepton mixing angles,
especially the reactor angle is related to the neutrino mass patterns and the
model will be tested in future neutrino experiments, e.g., an early (late)
discovery of the reactor angle favors the normal (inverted) hierarchy. The size
of extra dimension has a connection to the possible mass spectrum; a small
(large) volume corresponds to the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures; added references for section
