    Nonlinear conductance of nanowires - A signature of Luttinger liquid effects?

    We analyze recent measurements of the room temperature current-voltage characteristics of gold nanowires, whose zero current conductance is quantized in units of 2e2/h2e^2/h. A faster than linear increase of current with voltage was observed at low voltages beginning from Vc=0.1V_c=0.1V. We analyze the nonlinear behavior in terms of a dynamic Coulomb blockade of conducting modes and show that it may be explained as a Luttinger-liquid effect.Comment: 13 pages, latex with supplied stylefile, 3 figures in eps format, submitted to Superlattices and Microstructure

    We present results for the so-called `bar-attendance' model of market behavior: pp adaptive agents, each possessing nn prediction rules chosen randomly from a pool, attempt to attend a bar whose cut-off is ss. The global attendance time-series has a mean near, but not equal to, ss.     High-temperature excess current and quantum suppression of electronic backscattering in a 1-D system

    We consider the electronic current through a one-dimensional conductor in the ballistic transport regime and show that the quantum oscillations of a weakly pinned single scattering target results in a temperature- and bias-voltage independent excess current at large bias voltages. This is a genuine effect on transport that derives from an exponential reduction of electronic backscattering in the elastic channel due to quantum delocalization of the scatterer and from suppression of low-energy electron backscattering in the inelastic channels caused by the Pauli exclusion principle. We show that both the mass of the target and the frequency of its quantum vibrations can be measured by studying the differential conductance and the excess current. We apply our analysis to the particular case of a weakly pinned C60 molecule encapsulated by a single-wall carbon nanotube and find that the discussed phenomena are experimentally observable.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Entanglement of distant optomechanical systems

    We theoretically investigate the possibility to generate non-classical states of optical and mechanical modes of optical cavities, distant from each other. A setup comprised of two identical cavities, each with one fixed and one movable mirror and coupled by an optical fiber, is studied in detail. We show that with such a setup there is potential to generate entanglement between the distant cavities, involving both optical and mechanical modes. The scheme is robust with respect to dissipation, and nonlocal correlations are found to exist in the steady state at finite temperatures.Comment: 12 pages (published with minor modifications

    Electrical Manipulation of Nanomagnets

    We demonstrate a possibility to manipulate the magnetic coupling between two nanomagnets with a help of ac electric field. In the scheme suggested the magnetic coupling in question is mediated by a magnetic particle contacting with both of the nanomagnets through the tunnel barriers. The electric field providing a successive suppression of the barriers leads to pumping of magnetization through the mediating particle. Time dependent dynamics of the particle magnetization allows to to switch between ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Observation of sea levels continuously is very important in order to adapt the disasters in the coastal areas. Conventionally observations of sea level using tide gauge, but the number of tide gauge installed along the coast of Indonesia is still limited. Altimetry satellite data is one solution; therefore it is necessary to assess the potential and accuracy of altimetry satellite data to complement the sea level data from tide gauges. The study was conducted in the coastal waters of Cilacap and Bali by analysis data Envisat satellite altimetry for period 2003 to 2010 and data compiled from a variety of satellite altimetry from 2006 to 2014. Data tidal was used as a comparison of altimetry satellite data. The altimetry satellite data in Cilacap and Benoa waters more than 90% could be used to assess the variation and the sea level rise during the period 2003-2010. The rate of sea level rise both the data of tidal and satellite altimetry data indicates the same rate was 3.5 mm/year in Cilacap. in Benoa are 4.7 mm/year and 5.60 mm/year respectively

    COASTAL UPWELLING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF WESTERLY WIND BURST IN THE NORTH OF PAPUA CONTINENT, WESTERN PACIFIC

    Coastal upwelling play an important role in biological productivity and the carbon cycle in the ocean. This research aimed to examine the phenomenon of coastal upwelling that occur in the coastal waters north of Papua continent under the influence of Westerly Wind Burst(WWB) prior to the development of El Nino in the Pacific. Data consisted of sea surface temperature, vertical oceanic temperature, ocean color satellite image, wind stress and vector wind speed image, sea surface high, and Nino 3.4 index. Coastal upwelling events in the northern coastal waters of Papua continent occurred in response to westerly winds and westerly wind burst (WWBs) during December to March characterizing by low sea surface temperature (SST) (25 - 28C), negative sea surface high deviation and phytoplankton blooming, except during pre-development of the El Nino 2006/2007 where weak upwelling followed by positive sea surface high deviation. Strong coastal upwelling occurred during two WWBs in December and March1996/1997 with maximum wind speed in March produced a strong El Nino 1997/1998. Upwelling generally occurred along coastal waters of Jayapura to Papua New Guinea with more intensive in coastal waters north of Papua New Guinea indicated by Ekman transport and Ekman layer depth maximum
