Do Spin-Offs Make the Academics’ Heads Spin?: The Impacts of Spin-Off Companies on Their Parent Research Organisation
As public research organisations are increasingly driven by their national and regional governments to engage in knowledge transfer, they have started to support the creation of companies. These research based spin-off companies (RBSOs) often keep contacts with the research institutes they originate from. In this paper we present the results of a study of four research institutes within two universities and two non-university public research organisations (PROs) in the Netherlands. We show that research organisations have distinct motivations to support the creation of spin-off companies. In terms of resources RBSOs contribute, mostly in a modest way, to research activities by providing information, equipment and monetary resources. In particular, RBSOs are helpful for researchers competing for research grants that demand participation of industry. Furthermore, RBSOs may be seen as a proactive response by Dutch public research organisations to demands of economic relevance from their institutional environment. RBSOs enhance the prestige of their parent organisations and create legitimacy for public funds invested in PROs. At the same time, most RBSOs do not have a significant impact on the direction of the research conducted at the PROs
Integrating omics datasets with the OmicsPLS package
Background: With the exponential growth in available biomedical data, there is a need for data integration methods that can extract information about relationships between the data sets. However, these data sets might have very different characteristics. For interpretable results, data-specific variation needs to be quantified. For this task, Two-way Orthogonal Partial Least Squares (O2PLS) has been proposed. To facilitate application and development of the methodology, free and open-source software is required. However, this is not the case with O2PLS. Results: We introduce OmicsPLS, an open-source implementation of the O2PLS method in R. It can handle both low- and high-dimensional datasets efficiently. Generic methods for inspecting and visualizing results are implemented. Both a standard and faster alternative cross-validation methods are available to determine the number of components. A simulation study shows good performance of OmicsPLS compared to alternatives, in terms of accuracy and CPU runtime. We demonstrate OmicsPLS by integrating genetic and glycomic data. Conclusions: We propose the OmicsPLS R package: a free and open-source implementation of O2PLS for statistical data integration. Human adult cardiac autonomic innervation : controversies in anatomical knowledge and relevance for cardiac neuromodulation
Background: Cardiac sympathetic blockade is a therapeutic approach for arrhythmias and heart failure and may be a beneficial effect of high thoracic epidural anesthesia. These treatments require detailed knowledge of the spatial location and distribution of cardiac autonomic nerves, however, there are controversies on this subject in humans.
Objective: To provide a systematic overview of current knowledge on human anatomy of the cardiac autonomic nervous system.
Results: In contrast to the often claimed assumption that human preganglionic sympathetic cardiac neurons originate mainly from thoracic spinal segments T1-T4 or T5, there is ample evidence indicating involvement of cervical spinal segment C8 and thoracic spinal segments below T5. Whether cervical ganglia besides the stellate ganglion play a role in transmission of cardiac sympathetic signals is unclear. Similarly, there is debate on the origin of cardiac nerves from different thoracic ganglia. Most human studies report thoracic cardiac nerves emerging from the first to fourth thoracic paravertebral ganglia; others report contributions from the fifth, sixth and even the seventh thoracic ganglia. There is no agreement on the precise composition of nerve plexuses at the cardiac level. After years of debate, it is generally accepted that the vagal nerve contributes to ventricular innervation. Vagal distribution appears higher in atria, whereas adrenergic fibers exceed the number of vagal fibers in the ventricles.
Conclusion: Anatomy of the human cardiac autonomic nervous system is highly variable and likely extends beyond generally assumed boundaries. This information is relevant for thoracic epidural anesthesia and procedures targeting neuronal modulation of cardiac sympathetic innervation

The potential of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors for the treatment of systemic right ventricular failure in adults with congenital heart disease
AimsGiven the compelling evidence on the effectiveness of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in the conventional heart failure population, SGLT2i deserve exploration in systemic right ventricular (sRV) failure. The initial experience with dapagliflozin in sRV failure patients is described, with a focus on tolerability and short-term effects on clinical outcomes.Methods and resultsTen patients (70% female, median age 50 years [46.5–52]) with symptomatic sRV failure who received dapagliflozin 10 mg per day on top of optimal medical therapy between 04–2021 and 01–2023 were included. Within 4 weeks, no significant changes in blood pressure, electrolytes, or serum glucose occurred. Creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) showed a slight decline (88 ± 17 to 97 ± 23 µmol/L, p = 0.036, and 72 ± 14 vs. 66 ± 16 ml/min/1.73m2, p = 0.020, respectively). At 6 months follow-up (n = 8), median NT-proBNP decreased significantly from 736.6 [589.3–1193.3] to 531.6 [400.8–1018] ng/L (p = 0.012). Creatinine and eGFR recovered to baseline levels. There were no significant changes in echocardiographic systolic sRV or left ventricular function. New York Heart Association class improved significantly in 4 out of 8 patients (p = 0.046), who also showed an improvement in the 6-minute walk test or bicycle exercise test performance. One female patient developed an uncomplicated urinary tract infection. No patients discontinued treatment.ConclusionDapagliflozin was well-tolerated in this small cohort of sRV failure patients. While the early results on the reduction of NT-proBNP and clinical outcome parameters are encouraging, large-scale prospective studies are warranted to thoroughly evaluate the effects of SGLT2i in the growing sRV failure population
Unmasking Individual and Institutional HIV Stigma in Hospitals:Perspectives of Dutch Healthcare Providers
People with HIV continue to experience HIV stigma. Quantitative data on HIV stigma perpetrated by healthcare providers of hospitals providing HIV care in high-income countries are limited. The aim of this study is to investigate factors associated with HIV stigma in Dutch healthcare settings from the healthcare providers’ perspective. We conducted a cross-sectional study using the questionnaire ‘Measuring HIV Stigma and Discrimination Among Health Facility Staff – Monitoring Tool for Global Indicators’ to assess HIV stigma among healthcare providers (n = 405) in two academic hospitals. Healthcare providers licensed to provide medical care were eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome was the self-reported prevalence of at least one manifestation of HIV stigma measured by six stigma indicators (four individual, two institutional). Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of HIV stigma per indicator, per occupation, per department, and factors associated with individual stigma indicators. HIV stigma was prevalent among 88.1% (95%CI 84.5% − 91.2%) of participants. Stigma was mostly driven by negative attitudes towards people with HIV and worry to acquire HIV. Multivariate analysis showed that several factors were associated with HIV stigma, including younger age, male sex, working at one of the surgical departments, and working as a nurse. Having received any training on HIV stigma and/or discrimination was associated with less HIV stigma among all indicators. In conclusion, HIV stigma is highly prevalent among Dutch healthcare providers. Targeted approaches, including training on HIV stigma and discrimination, are needed to reduce HIV stigma in healthcare and should, among others, focus on younger healthcare providers.</p
Altered levels of blood proteins in Alzheimer\u27s disease longitudinal study: Results from Australian Imaging Biomarkers Lifestyle Study of Ageing cohort
Introduction A blood-based biomarker panel to identify individuals with preclinical Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) would be an inexpensive and accessible first step for routine testing. Methods We analyzed 14 biomarkers that have previously been linked to AD in the Australian Imaging Biomarkers lifestyle longitudinal study of aging cohort. Results Levels of apolipoprotein J (apoJ) were higher in AD individuals compared with healthy controls at baseline and 18 months (P =.0003) and chemokine-309 (I-309) were increased in AD patients compared to mild cognitive impaired individuals over 36 months (P =.0008). Discussion These data suggest that apoJ may have potential in the context of use (COU) of AD diagnostics, I-309 may be specifically useful in the COU of identifying individuals at greatest risk for progressing toward AD. This work takes an initial step toward identifying blood biomarkers with potential use in the diagnosis and prognosis of AD and should be validated across other prospective cohorts. © 2017 The Author
