Can Comparative Risk Be Used to Develop Better Environmental Decisions?
This thesis investigates the design of atria for daylighting in large scale buildings. Athree dimensional test building with a central atrium was constructed and various parameters of the atrium altered. The impact of these changes was studied through computer simulations of annual daylight distribution by implementing state of theart software. Daylight autonomy is simulated for an annual climate file for Stockholm, Sweden. In the thesis, notion is made of basic daylighting concepts, the importance of bringing daylight into buildings is argued, and the daylighting criteria of three environmental certification tools introduced. Furthermore, a detailed comparison is made on several well known daylight simulation tools. A newly developed, state of the art, daylight simulation tool called Honeybee, is used in the simulation process. The tool utilizes the calculation engines of wellknown daylight simulation software Radiance and Daysim, which apply backward ray-tracing to reach accurate results. Honeybee is coupled to the graphical algorithmeditor Grasshopper for Rhinoceros 3D, which allows for an efficient way of parametric modelling. The comparison of five different daylight simulation tools showed that Honeybee outweighs the capabilities of many of them by offering a wast range of simulation capabilities and also giving the user exceptional control of result data within multiple zones of the test building. The results of the daylight study have been compiled into a document which purpose is to serve as early stage design guidelines of atria for architects. Many factors have been shown through simulation to have a dramatic impact on daylighton an annual basis, and several suggestions have been made on how to maximize the quantity of daylight within buildings containing atria
Lessons from Brecht: a Brechtian approach to drama, texts and education
In this piece the authors seek to re-read Brecht in terms of his contribution to drama education and pedagogic thought, rather than viewing him in conventional terms as a cultural icon and ‘great practitioner’ of theatre. The authors believe that a Brechtian conceptual framework, with its emphasis on critical production and critical audiences, is still pertinent to the conditions of contemporary cultural production. A Brechtian framework is seen as a way of taking drama education beyond the conventional polarities where on the one hand it is seen as a process of moral and social education dealing with universal truths, or on the other hand, as a set of formal and critical techniques
Participation Motivation in Martial Artists in the West Midlands Region of England
The objectives were to identify the participation motivations and the perceived importance of certain
participation factors in martial artists in the West Midlands, England, UK. A 28-item adapted version of the Participation Motivation Questionnaire with additional demographic questions was distributed to 30 martial arts clubs in the West Midlands region. Eight questions that assessed the perceived importance
for participation of progression through grades, learning self defence skills, technical ability of
instructors, cost of participating, development of confidence, underpinning philosophy and instructional
style were included. Seventy-five questionnaires were returned from a total of 11 clubs from across
representing practitioners in Tai Chi, Karate, Kung fu, Aikido, Jeet Kune Do, British Free Fighting,
Taekwon-Do and Jujitsu. Results indicated that the rank order in terms of participation motives was: 1-
Affiliation; 2-Friendship; 3-Fitness; 4-Reward/status; 5-Competition; 6-Situational and 7-Skill
development. Participants who trained for more than 4 hours per week placed greater importance on the
underpinning philosophy of the martial art. Findings suggest that whilst there is a gender discrepancy in
participation level, once engaged, females were equally committed to weekly training. The ‘style’ of the
instructor is of paramount importance for enhancing student motivation to participate. High volume
practitioners would appear to be fully immersed in the holistic appreciation of the martial art through
increased value placed on its underpinning philosophy

Cosmic string formation by flux trapping
We study the formation of cosmic strings by confining a stochastic magnetic
field into flux tubes in a numerical simulation. We use overdamped evolution in
a potential that is minimized when the flux through each face in the simulation
lattice is a multiple of the fundamental flux quantum. When the typical number
of flux quanta through a correlation-length-sized region is initially about 1,
we find a string network similar to that generated by the Kibble-Zurek
mechanism. With larger initial flux, the loop distribution and the Brownian
shape of the infinite strings remain unchanged, but the fraction of length in
infinite strings is increased. A 2D slice of the network exhibits bundles of
strings pointing in the same direction, as in earlier 2D simulations. We find,
however, that strings belonging to the same bundle do not stay together in 3D
for much longer than the correlation length. As the initial flux per
correlation length is decreased, there is a point at which infinite strings
