Targeted LGBT Senior Housing: A Study of the Needs and Perceptions of LGBT Seniors in Chicago

    Get PDF
Although lesbian gay bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) seniors face issues similar to their heterosexual counterparts such as declining health, dwindling finances, depression, social isolation, and ageism, they also face unique issues such as discrimination based on sexual orientation, and are at an even greater risk for health problems such as depression, substance abuse, and even suicide. Therefore LGBT seniors require support services specifically designed to meet their unique needs. The housing needs of LGBT seniors are one such area that must be addressed as more LGBT persons enter their advanced years

The Role of the Midwife in Hapsburg Spain

The Holy Roman Empire during the early modern period (14th and 15th centuries) accounted for several countries within central Europe that fell under the mandate of the Roman Catholic Church. Of the many royal families that ruled these countries, The Hapsburg family maintained a position as Holy Roman Emperor for many consecutive years, and gained majority of their favor and power through political marriages and the children that came from these unions. Gender roles during the 14th-16th century were very strictly defined, with women following roles set out through religious mandate and the misogynistic teachings of male philosophers. The role of a queen was to provide heirs for the crown as well as represent the ideal woman for the common people. Her health as well as the safe delivery and infancy of her heir were secured through the midwife. The role of the midwife was one unlike any other in early modern European royal society. She was a figure of power and competency in a role that demanded excellence, all qualities that were encouraged in men rather than women. Aside from being a key witness and aid in the birthing of new heirs, the midwife was a pivotal character in the royal women’s general and mental health, a topic frequently addressed when studying the Hapsburg lineage. This research analyses the relationship of the midwife’s importance within the Hapsburg court, and examines the fights she would face in the eyes of the reformation. Through study of literature, documentation, paintings, and the deductions of other researchers, I will hope to explain the phenomenon that is the midwife’s cardinal role of power in a heavily patriarchal hierarchy

Mutants and Assay System to Identify USP/RXR Ligands

    Get PDF
The invention relates to mutant nuclear hormone receptors that encode mutant nuclear hormone receptors, in which particular amino acid residues are substituted with respect to wild type, so as to be able to detect ligand binding to the mutant receptor by either a change in a physical property of the mutant receptor and/or an transcriptional induction of a nuclear hormone receptor construct. The invention also relates to a nuclear hormone receptor response element denoted by the formula YDRXZ comprising a direct repeat (DR) comprising two half sites separated by X nucleic acid bases; wherein Z indicates the presence of at least one DR oriented in either a forward or reverse orientation; wherein Y equals 1 to 8 forward and/or reverse direct repeats; and X equals 1 to about 12

Handwriting Abilities of Low-SES Elementary Students Compared to Grade-Level Expectations

Background: Satisfactory handwriting is important for elementary students to demonstrate their knowledge and produce academic achievements, as well as to foster a sense of competence. Pre-pandemic research has shown that students from low-socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds were more likely to have handwriting difficulties than same-grade peers. In this study, I looked at the post-pandemic handwriting legibility scores of local low-SES elementary students compared to grade-level expectations. Methods: Handwriting legibility was measured in second (n=19), third (n=19), and fourth (n=15) grade students at a low-SES elementary school in Greenville, NC, using the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency (orientation, memory, placement, and sentence). The means and standard deviations were calculated for total score and placement score to show differences by grade. Results: The majority of students (second n=13, third n=17, fourth n=11) scored below grade-level expectations. The mean handwriting placement score was consistently the lowest component score across all grade levels. Conclusion: Overall, data collected in this study shows post-pandemic low-SES elementary students have handwriting difficulties consistent with pre-pandemic research. Recommendations include providing handwriting instruction and remediation for students in all grade levels, especially for handwriting placement

The following thesis consists of a variety of case studies surrounding accounting and related topics. Each case contains an introduction to the case and key takeaways from completing the case. Through completing these cases, I gained valuable knowledge regarding current accounting issues a developed a more robust understanding of the profession. The case studies were completed during the 2020-2021 academic year under the direction of Dr. Victoria Dickinson in fulfillment of the requirements for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College

The Impacts of Consuming Peanuts During Pregnancy

    Get PDF
Peanut allergy accounts for the majority of severe food-related allergic reactions. Childhood allergies have increased in prevalence by 50% between 1997 to 2011 with peanut allergies almost tripling between 1997 and 2017 (Turke, 2017). It tends to present early in life and affected individuals usually do not outgrow it. Reactions to peanuts can range from mild to severe, such as anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of a peanut allergy is confirmed with the detection of peanut-specific IgE (Czolk R., 2021). The question remains how does one develop a peanut allergy? Our research project has used evidence-based practice and nursing research to determine if consumption of peanuts by a pregnant woman can affect the child\u27s likelihood of being born with a peanut allergy

A Racial Impact Analysis of HB 869/SB 274

Virginia is growing. Between 1990 and 2000, Virginia’s population rose by over 14% - the largest population growth experienced by the state in a single decade (Pollard, 2007). And the state continues to grow. It has been estimated that by 2030, Virginia’s total population may exceed 9.8 million people (Pollard, 2007). Along with population growth, land development has increased which in turn affects transportation, housing and job placement across the Commonwealth. In fact, in many parts of the state, development has outpaced population growth. According to Pollard, “If current patterns continue, Virginia will develop more land in the next 40 years than in the previous 400 years (p.8).” In an effort to curb sprawling development and decrease transportation expenditure, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 3202 in 2007. One major outcome of this multifaceted legislation was the introduction of mandatory Urban Development Areas (UDAs). The goal of UDAs was for localities to concentrate growth and development in order to reduce the cost of transportation and increase opportunities to build multi-use developments and expand affordable housing. In 2012, the General Assembly passed House Bill 869 and Senate Bill 274 which effectively make UDAs no longer mandatory but optional for all localities in the Commonwealth. In this paper, we analyze the racial impact and explore the political history of HB 869/SB 274 while addressing the larger issue of sprawl across the Commonwealth. Smart Growth policies are known to positively impact the environment but they also positively impact low-income and minority communities by increasing access to housing, transportation and ultimately jobs. The story behind Urban Development Areas in the Commonwealth is one of politics and regulation but issues as critical as housing, transportation and job access should be focused much more on the citizens of the Commonwealth. The friction created by the UDA policy between the localities and the state has the potential to spark a statewide conversation about land use and more importantly - the need for people-centered solutions to a growing problem
