Application of LANDSAT images to wetland study and land use classification in west Tennessee, part 1
The author has identified the following significant results. densitometric analysis was performed on LANDSAT data to permit numerical classification of objects observed in the imagery on the basis of measurements of optical density. Relative light transmission measurements were taken on four types of scene elements in each of three LANDSAT black and white bands in order to determine which classification could be distinguished. The analysis of band 6 determined forest and agricultural classifications, but not the urban and wetlands. Both bands 4 and 5 showed a significant difference existed between the confirmed classification of wetlands-agriculture, and urban areas. Therefore, the combination of band 6 with either 4 or 5 would permit the separation of the urban from the wetland classification. To enhance the urban and wetland boundaries, the LANDSAT black and white bands were combined in a multispectral additive color viewer. Several combinations of filters and light intensities were used to obtain maximum discrimination between points of interest. The best results for enhancing wetland boundaries and urban areas were achieved by using a color composite (a blue, green, and red filter on bands 4, 5 and 6 respectively)
Normality of orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone
We continue the study of the closures of -orbits in the enhanced
nilpotent cone V\times\cN begun by the first two authors. We prove that each
closure is an invariant-theoretic quotient of a suitably-defined enhanced
quiver variety. We conjecture, and prove in special cases, that these enhanced
quiver varieties are normal complete intersections, implying that the enhanced
nilpotent orbit closures are also normal.Comment: 30 page
Remote sensing application to regional activities
Two agencies within the State of Tennessee were identified whereby the transfer of aerospace technology, namely remote sensing, could be applied to their stated problem areas. Their stated problem areas are wetland and land classification and strip mining studies. In both studies, LANDSAT data was analyzed with the UTSI video-input analog/digital automatic analysis and classification facility. In the West Tennessee area three land-use classifications could be distinguished; cropland, wetland, and forest. In the East Tennessee study area, measurements were submitted to statistical tests which verified the significant differences due to natural terrain, stripped areas, various stages of reclamation, water, etc. Classifications for both studies were output in the form of maps of symbols and varying shades of gray
Employees’ perceptions of the impact of work on health behaviours
Research examining the impact of work on health behaviours has rarely provided a complete picture of the impact across health behaviours. Twenty-four employees were interviewed about their smoking, drinking, exercise and eating. Themes included the impact of the work environment, including policy, convenience and workplace cultural norms; business events effecting one’s routine, and again convenience and workplace cultural norms; being busy at work effecting time and energy for healthy behaviour; and work stress leading to health behaviours being used as coping responses on bad and good days. The impact of work is similar across health behaviours and is primarily detrimental

Double Diffusion Encoding Prevents Degeneracy in Parameter Estimation of Biophysical Models in Diffusion MRI
Purpose: Biophysical tissue models are increasingly used in the
interpretation of diffusion MRI (dMRI) data, with the potential to provide
specific biomarkers of brain microstructural changes. However, the general
Standard Model has recently shown that model parameter estimation from dMRI
data is ill-posed unless very strong magnetic gradients are used. We analyse
this issue for the Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging with
Diffusivity Assessment (NODDIDA) model and demonstrate that its extension from
Single Diffusion Encoding (SDE) to Double Diffusion Encoding (DDE) solves the
ill-posedness and increases the accuracy of the parameter estimation. Methods:
We analyse theoretically the cumulant expansion up to fourth order in b of SDE
and DDE signals. Additionally, we perform in silico experiments to compare SDE
and DDE capabilities under similar noise conditions. Results: We prove
analytically that DDE provides invariant information non-accessible from SDE,
which makes the NODDIDA parameter estimation injective. The in silico
experiments show that DDE reduces the bias and mean square error of the
estimation along the whole feasible region of 5D model parameter space.
Conclusions: DDE adds additional information for estimating the model
parameters, unexplored by SDE, which is enough to solve the degeneracy in the
NODDIDA model parameter estimation.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
Reconnecting Magnetic Flux Tubes as a Source of In Situ Acceleration in Extragalactic Radio Sources
Many extended extragalactic radio sources require a local {\it in situ\/}
acceleration mechanism for electrons, in part because the synchrotron lifetimes
are shorter than the bulk travel time across the emitting regions. If the
magnetic field in these sources is localized in flux tubes, reconnection may
occur between regions of plasma \be (ratio of particle to magnetic pressure)
, even though averaged over the plasma volume may be \gsim 1.
Reconnection in low regions is most favorable to acceleration from
reconnection shocks. The reconnection X-point regions may provide the injection
electrons for their subsequent non-thermal shock acceleration to distributions
reasonably consistent with observed spectra. Flux tube reconnection might
therefore be able to provide acceleration required by large scale

The 5'-3' exoribonuclease Pacman (Xrn1) regulates expression of the heat shock protein Hsp67Bc and the microRNA miR-277-3p in Drosophila wing imaginal discs
Pacman/Xrn1 is a highly conserved exoribonuclease known to play a critical role in gene regulatory events such as control of mRNA stability, RNA interference and regulation via miRNAs. Although Pacman has been well studied in Drosophila tissue culture cells, the biologically relevant cellular pathways controlled by Pacman in natural tissues are unknown. This study shows that a hypomorphic mutation in pacman (pcm5) results in smaller wing imaginal discs. These tissues, found in the larva, are known to grow and differentiate to form wing and thorax structures in the adult fly. Using microarray analysis, followed by quantitative RT-PCR, we show that eight mRNAs were increased in level by >2 fold in the pcm5 mutant wing discs compared to the control. The levels of pre mRNAs were tested for five of these mRNAs; four did not increase in the pcm5 mutant, showing that they are regulated at the post-transcriptional level and therefore could be directly affected by Pacman. These transcripts include one that encodes the heat-shock protein Hsp67Bc, which is upregulated 11.9-fold at the post-transcriptional level and 2.3-fold at the protein level. One miRNA, miR-277-3p, is 5.6-fold downregulated at the post-transcriptional level in mutant discs, suggesting that Pacman affects its processing in this tissue. Together, these data show that a relatively small number of mRNAs and miRNAs substantially change in abundance in pacman mutant wing imaginal discs. Since Hsp67Bc is known to regulate autophagy and protein synthesis, it is possible that Pacman may control the growth of wing imaginal discs by regulating these processes
The incidence of mid-infrared excesses in G and K giants
Using photometric data from the 2MASS and GLIMPSE catalogues, I investigate
the incidence of mid-infrared excesses (~10 microns) of G and K stars of
luminosity class III. In order to obtain a large sample size, stars are
selected using a near-IR colour-magnitude diagram. Sources which are candidates
for showing mid-IR excess are carefully examined and modelled to determined
whether they are likely to be G/K giants. It is found that mid-IR excesses are
present at a level of (1.8 +/- 0.4) x 10^-3. While the origin of these excesses
remains uncertain, it is plausible that they arise from debris discs around
these stars. I note that the measured incidence is consistent with a scenario
in which dust lifetimes in debris discs are determined by Poynting-Robertson
