A Comparative Analysis of Print-Of-View Modeling For Industrial and Technology Education Courses
(First paragraph): Enrollment in technology education at the college level has been declining (Isbell & Lovedahl, 1989; Volk, 1997; Daugherty, 1998; Hill, 1999; Ndahi & Ritz, 2003; Moye, 2009). It is essential for technology teacher educators to investigate ways to increase the enrollment in their programs, or the profession may fail to provide technology teachers in the future (Ndahi & Ritz, 2003). A solution that several institutions with technology education programs have adopted is the offering of the program via distance learning. Distance learning βallows participants to collapse time and spaceβ (Cole, 2000, p. ix). According to Flowers (2003) technology education programs βwith a history of hands-on learning at the undergraduate levelβ have been slow to implement distance learning techniques and strategies (p. 64). Therefore, it is important to explore the extent to which distance-learning technologies such as video modeling can be used by industrial and technical teacher education faculty. Binary Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae Discovered Through Photometric Variability III: The Central Star of Abell 65
A growing number of close binary stars are being discovered among central
stars of planetary nebulae. Recent and ongoing surveys are finding new systems
and contributing to our knowledge of the evolution of close binary systems. The
push to find more systems was largely based on early discoveries which
suggested that 10 to 15% of all central stars are close binaries. One goal of
this series of papers is confirmation and classification of these systems as
close binaries and determination of binary system parameters. Here we provide
time-resolved multi-wavelength photometry of the central star of Abell 65 as
well as further analysis of the nebula and discussion of possible
binary--nebula connections. Our results for Abell 65 confirm recent work
showing that it has a close, cool binary companion, though several of our model
parameters disagree with the recently published values. With our longer time
baseline of photometric observations from 1989--2009 we also provide a more
precise orbital period of 1.0037577 days.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa
Identifying prognostic structural features in tissue sections of colon cancer patients using point pattern analysis
Diagnosis and prognosis of cancer is informed by the architecture inherent in cancer patient tissue sections. This architecture is typically identified by pathologists, yet advances in computational image analysis facilitate quantitative assessment of this structure. In this article we develop a spatial point process approach in order to describe patterns in cell distribution within tissue samples taken from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. In particular, our approach is centered on the Palm intensity function. This leads to taking an approximate-likelihood technique in fitting point processes models. We consider two Neyman-Scott point processes and a void process, fitting these point process models to the CRC patient data. We find that the parameter estimates of these models may be used to quantify the spatial arrangement of cells. Importantly, we observe characteristic differences in the spatial arrangement of cells between patients who died from CRC and those alive at follow-up
Exploring the multidimensional assessment of interoceptive awareness in youth aged 7β17 years
Objective
This study aimed to adapt the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) questionnaire for younger respondents.
Method
The language of the MAIA was revised and children aged 7β10 years (nβ=β212) and adolescents aged 11β17 years (nβ=β217) completed the questionnaire.
Results
The original eightβfactor model was tested for fit using confirmatory factor analysis. The model had an acceptable fit in the total sample and younger subsample and overall fit in the older subsample was adequate following modification. Internal consistency was good, except for the Noticing, NotβDistracting and NotβWorrying scales. Results also demonstrated a negative linear relationship between the trusting scale and age, suggesting that youths may lose trust in their body as they age.
Conclusion
The adapted MAIA can be used with a younger population and, depending on the research question, individual MAIA scales may be selected. The survey is available at https://osher.ucsf.edu/maia
