Origin of the transient unpulsed radio emission from the PSR B1259-63 binary system

We discuss the interpretation of transient, unpulsed radio emission detected from the unique pulsar/Be-star binary system PSR B1259-63. Extensive monitoring of the 1994 and 1997 periastron passages has shown that the source flares over a 100-day interval around periastron, varying on time-scales as short as a day and peaking at 60 mJy (~100 times the apastron flux density) at 1.4 GHz. Interpreting the emission as synchrotron radiation, we show that (i) the observed variations in flux density are too large to be caused by the shock interaction between the pulsar wind and an isotropic, radiatively driven, Be-star wind, and (ii) the radio emitting electrons do not originate from the pulsar wind. We argue instead that the radio electrons originate from the circumstellar disk of the Be star and are accelerated at two epochs, one before and one after periastron, when the pulsar passes through the disk. A simple model incorporating two epochs of impulsive acceleration followed by synchrotron cooling reproduces the essential features of the radio light curve and spectrum and is consistent with the system geometry inferred from pulsed radio data.Comment: To be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters 7 pages, 1 postscript figur

Discovery of an Eo-Meso-Neoarchean Terrane in the East Greenland Caledonides

tThis study investigates basement gneisses from the Niggli Spids thrust sheet of the East Greenland Caledonides in an attempt to place them into the broader context of the Archean–Paleoproterozoicarchitecture of the Greenland shield. Our combined whole-rock geochemical and U–Pb zircon geochronol-ogy results from Gåseland reveal an Archean terrane defined by TTG magmatic events at 3607 Ma and3070–2980 Ma followed by metamorphism and high-K granite intrusion at 2790–2677 Ma. These results identify a relatively pristine Archean terrane with previously unknown Eoarchean rocks that holds poten-tial for future investigations into the early evolution of continental crust, and adds to a growing body of data characterizing the Archean–Paleoproterozoic architecture of East Greenland

A dual lane piezoelectric ring bender actuated nozzle-flapper servo valve for aero engine fuel metering

    Get PDF
Amongst many other high performance flow control applications, servo valves are used to control aero engines by metering the fuel delivered from the fuel pump. Conventionally, a fuel metering servo valve has a pilot stage with an electromagnetic torque motor moving a flapper which differentially restricts a pair of nozzles to create a hydraulic signal (i.e. a pressure difference). These valve pilot stages use mature, optimised technology such that to achieve improvements requires a novel approach. Torque motors in particular present reliability and manufacturing difficulties, and news solutions should ultimately allow a reduction in manual assembly and set-up, improve repeatability, and eliminate failures associated with fine wire devices. In this paper, a pilot stage actuated by piezoelectric ring benders is proposed, designed, built and tested, and test results are compared with a model used to predict pressure-flow characteristics. A particular challenge is the need to include redundancy, and thus a pair of ring benders is used, allowing isolation between duplicated electrical control channels. Another challenge is the mounting of the ring bender, which has to flex to allow the outer edge of the ring bender to deform, yet be stiff enough to adequately react against generated forces. O-ring mounts made from three different elastomer materials are compared in this study. In aerospace, an added complication is the large range of fuel temperature; F70 fluorosilicone O-rings have been chosen with this in mind, and successfully demonstrated in the range -50 C to +180 C. With one active and one inactive ring bender to simulate a failure condition, the new dual lane pilot stage achieves +/-50 μm displacement under test, giving control port flows up to +/-0.6 l min -1, and a control port pressure variation of 40 bar using a 100 bar supply pressure difference (supply minus return pressure). This research establishes that a piezoelectric aero engine fuel valve is feasible, and in particular, that piezoelectric ring bender actuators with elastomeric mountings are highly suited to this application. </p

    A low-temperature phase of bis(tetrabutylammonium) octa-l3-chloridohexachlorido- octahedro-hexatungstate

The article discusses the low-temperature phase of bis(tetrabutylammonium) octa-µ3-chlorido-hexachlorido-octahedro-hexa-tungstate, which undergoes a reversible phase transition at 268 K. The unit cells of the room- and low-temperature polymorphs of this compound are found to be closely related. The hydrocarbon chain of one of the tetrabutylammonium cations is found to be disordered at both 150 and 200 K
