    Transfer entropy has long been used to discover network structures and relationships based on the behavior of nodes in the system, especially for complex adaptive systems. Using the fact that organizations often behave as complex adaptive systems, transfer entropy can be applied to discover the relationships and structure within an organizational network. The organizational structures are built using a model developed by Dodd, Watts, et al, and a simulation method for complex adaptive supply networks is used to create node behavior data. The false positive rate and true positive rates are established for various organizational structures and compared to a basic tree. This study provides a baseline understanding for the accuracy that can be expected when discovering organizational networks using these techniques. It also highlights conditions in which it may be more difficult to successfully discover a network structure using transfer entropy and bounds confidence levels for practitioners of such methods

    Using Information-theoretic Principles to Analyze and Evaluate Complex Adaptive Supply Network Architectures

    Information-theoretic principles can be applied to the study of complex adaptive supply networks (CASN). Previous modeling efforts of CASN were impeded by the complex, dynamic nature of the systems. However, information theory provides a model-free approach to the problem removing many of those barriers. Understanding how principles such as transfer entropy, excess entropy/predictive information, information storage, and separable information apply in the context of supply networks opens up new ways of studying these complex systems. Additionally, these principles provide the potential for new business analytics which give managers of CASN new insights into the system\u27s health, behavior, and eventual control strategies

    Methodology for Simulation and Analysis of Complex Adaptive Supply Network Structure and Dynamics Using Information Theory

    Supply networks existing today in many industries can behave as complex adaptive systems making them more difficult to analyze and assess. Being able to fully understand both the complex static and dynamic structures of a complex adaptive supply network (CASN) are key to being able to make more informed management decisions and prioritize resources and production throughout the network. Previous efforts to model and analyze CASN have been impeded by the complex, dynamic nature of the systems. However, drawing from other complex adaptive systems sciences, information theory provides a model-free methodology removing many of those barriers, especially concerning complex network structure and dynamics. With minimal information about the network nodes, transfer entropy can be used to reverse engineer the network structure while local transfer entropy can be used to analyze the network structure’s dynamics. Both simulated and real-world networks were analyzed using this methodology. Applying the methodology to CASNs allows the practitioner to capitalize on observations from the highly multidisciplinary field of information theory which provides insights into CASN’s self-organization, emergence, stability/instability, and distributed computation. This not only provides managers with a more thorough understanding of a system’s structure and dynamics for management purposes, but also opens up research opportunities into eventual strategies to monitor and manage emergence and adaption within the environment

    Feasibility of a mean platelet volume standard:an international council for standardization in hematology (ICSH) inter-laboratory study

    We have evaluated a commercial-fixed porcine platelet preparation (with and without added fixed human red blood cells (RBC)) for the potential standardization of mean platelet volume (MPV) measurements. The standards (Biotechne) were distributed internationally to 19 laboratories including all major hematology instrument manufacturers and academic/pathology laboratories. Overall, the standards demonstrated excellent stability up to 1 month within both MPV values and platelet counts when stored at 4°C. The presence of RBC significantly increased the platelet count and MPV values compared to platelets alone. However, as expected, there were differences in MPV values between different instruments and manufacturers. MPV values were also significantly higher in the whole blood standard compared to the platelet standard in the majority of instruments except with some instruments, where MPV values were significantly higher in the platelet only preparation. To further investigate this phenomenon, two different Platelet MPV preparations (with low and high MPV) in combination with 3 different RBC MCV preparations (with low, normal or high MCVs) were tested to try and further elucidate how RBC populations may impact upon platelet analysis (count, MPV, and PDW) using a single impedance analyzer. Both MPV and MCV values showed good stability over the course of the study for up to 50 days. As expected, the RBC preparation with the lowest MCV had the greatest impact on the MPV. However, this was not observed with an increase in MCV of the RBC or by a larger MPV of the platelet population. To further understand how different gating strategies may also influence results, we investigated the effect of either fixed or floating gate strategies upon MPV raw data from patient samples in a single impedance analyzer. Overall, it was clear that floating and fixed gate strategies also significantly impact upon MPV values. In conclusion, we have demonstrated the potential of an MPV standard with good stability characteristics for calibrating and comparing full blood counters that use different analysis principles, gating and MPV calculations. This may facilitate future instrument calibration and harmonization of results between different technologies

    The protective effects of social bonding on behavioral and pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity to chronic mild stress in prairie voles.

    Positive social interactions may protect against stress. This study investigated the beneficial effects of pairing with a social partner on behaviors and neuroendocrine function in response to chronic mild stress (CMS) in 13 prairie vole pairs. Following 5 days of social bonding, male and female prairie voles were exposed to 10 days of CMS (mild, unpredictable stressors of varying durations, for instance, strobe light, white noise, and damp bedding), housed with either the social partner (paired group) or individually (isolated group). Active and passive behavioral responses to the forced swim test (FST) and tail-suspension test (TST), and plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone, were measured in all prairie voles following the CMS period. Both female and male prairie voles housed with a social partner displayed lower durations of passive behavioral responses (immobility, a maladaptive behavioral response) in the FST (mean ± SEM; females: 17.3 ± 5.4 s; males: 9.3 ± 4.6 s) and TST (females: 56.8 ± 16.4 s; males: 40.2 ± 11.3 s), versus both sexes housed individually (females, FST: 98.6 ± 12.9 s; females, TST: 155.1 ± 19.3 s; males, FST: 92.4 ± 14.1 s; males, TST: 158.9 ± 22.0 s). Female (but not male) prairie voles displayed attenuated plasma stress hormones when housed with a male partner (ACTH: 945 ± 24.7 pg/ml; corticosterone: 624 ± 139.5 ng/ml), versus females housed individually (ACTH: 1100 ± 23.2 pg/ml; corticosterone: 1064 ± 121.7 ng/ml). These results may inform understanding of the benefits of social interactions on stress resilience. Lay Summary: Social stress can lead to depression. The study of social bonding and stress using an animal model will inform understanding of the protective effects of social bonds. This study showed that social bonding in a rodent model can protect against behavioral responses to stress, and may also be protective against the elevation of stress hormones. This study provides evidence that bonding and social support are valuable for protecting against stress in humans

    This report documents our first year efforts to address the use of many-core processors for high performance cyber protection. As the demands grow for higher bandwidth (beyond 1 Gbits/sec) on network connections, the need to provide faster and more efficient solution to cyber security grows. Fortunately, in recent years, the development of many-core network processors have seen increased interest. Prior working experiences with many-core processors have led us to investigate its effectiveness for cyber protection tools, with particular emphasis on high performance firewalls. Although advanced algorithms for smarter cyber protection of high-speed network traffic are being developed, these advanced analysis techniques require significantly more computational capabilities than static techniques. Moreover, many locations where cyber protections are deployed have limited power, space and cooling resources. This makes the use of traditionally large computing systems impractical for the front-end systems that process large network streams; hence, the drive for this study which could potentially yield a highly reconfigurable and rapidly scalable solution

    This paper unveils a new resource for macroeconomic research: a long-run dataset covering disaggregated bank credit for 17 advanced economies since 1870. The new data show that the share of mortgages on banks' balance sheets doubled in the course of the 20th century, driven by a sharp rise of mortgage lending to households. Household debt to asset ratios have risen substantially in many countries. Financial stability risks have been increasingly linked to real estate lending booms which are typically followed by deeper recessions and slower recoveries. Housing finance has come to play a central role in the modern macroeconomy
