Block-Conditional Missing at Random Models for Missing Data

Two major ideas in the analysis of missing data are (a) the EM algorithm [Dempster, Laird and Rubin, J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 39 (1977) 1--38] for maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, and (b) the formulation of models for the joint distribution of the data ${Z}$ and missing data indicators ${M}$, and associated "missing at random"; (MAR) condition under which a model for ${M}$ is unnecessary [Rubin, Biometrika 63 (1976) 581--592]. Most previous work has treated ${Z}$ and ${M}$ as single blocks, yielding selection or pattern-mixture models depending on how their joint distribution is factorized. This paper explores "block-sequential"; models that interleave subsets of the variables and their missing data indicators, and then make parameter restrictions based on assumptions in each block. These include models that are not MAR. We examine a subclass of block-sequential models we call block-conditional MAR (BCMAR) models, and an associated block-monotone reduced likelihood strategy that typically yields consistent estimates by selectively discarding some data. Alternatively, full ML estimation can often be achieved via the EM algorithm. Gesture Typing on Virtual Tabletop: Effect of Input Dimensions on Performance

The association of tabletop interaction with gesture typing presents interaction potential for situationally or physically impaired users. In this work, we use depth cameras to create touch surfaces on regular tabletops. We describe our prototype system and report on a supervised learning approach to fingertips touch classification. We follow with a gesture typing study that compares our system with a control tablet scenario and explore the influence of input size and aspect ratio of the virtual surface on the text input performance. We show that novice users perform with the same error rate at half the input rate with our system as compared to the control condition, that an input size between A5 and A4 present the best tradeoff between performance and user preference and that users' indirect tracking ability seems to be the overall performance limiting factor

Development of the Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts Scale

The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid Social sciences instrument designed to measure the construct of Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts. Data were collected from 114 adult martial arts participants. Study participants represented Taekwondo schools located in Arkansas and Filipino martial arts schools located in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. Development of the instrument involved the use of an expert panel, a Q-sort, test-retest reliability test, Exploratory Factor Analysis, and Cronbach\u27s alpha. The study resulted in a 20-item, 3-factor scale that measures Cultural Knowledge, Cultural Sensitivity, and Cultural Awareness and is named the Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts Scale. Results indicate the scale is reliable and valid. Reliability for each of the three factors based on Cronbach\u27s alpha were á = .962, .918, and .873 respectively. Initial validation of the instrument was established. However, further validation needs to occur. Future studies should be conducted with additional populations including other well-known martial arts styles from countries such as Japan and China. The construct of Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts could also be studied for its potential relationships to other leisure constructs. Study and instrumentation for other activities or endeavors that are associated with a particular culture would be another avenue for further study

Sticking With It: A Qualitative Analysis of the Factors That Motivate Instructors to Teach the Filipino Martial Arts

This qualitative study investigated the motivational factors that influence instructors to teach Filipino martial arts. The study was designed to address teaching from the perspective of the instructors’ experiences, and allowed them to tell their story in their own words. The following research question guided this study: 1. What factors motivate Filipino martial arts instructors to teach the Filipino martial arts? Eight instructors were selected to participate in this qualitative study. The instructors were interviewed via telephone and Skype. Each instructor was also observed teaching. Additionally, documents pertaining to each instructor and the Filipino martial arts were collected and analyzed. Two selective codes emerged from the data. The first selective code was Legacy. Legacy was supported by three axial codes: Preserve the Legacy, Provide for Personal Expression, and Enhance Personal Development. The second selective code was Sharing. Sharing was supported by three axial codes: Prepare for Self-Defense, Increase Pleasure, Provide Opportunities for Benefits and Achievements, and Become Part of a Family. Findings revealed that monetary gain was not a major factor influencing the instructors to teach the Filipino martial arts

Performance indicators for primary care groups; an evidence-based approach

The NHS Executive and Department of Health have proposed a wide range of performance indicators many of which are applicable to future primary care groups Some of these indicators reflect access and efficiency, but few of the effectiveness indicators are based on primary care interventions for which there is evidence that increased uptake results in improved health outcomes We present a method to identify important primary care interventions of proved efficacy and suggest performance indicators that could monitor their use Our evidence based approach may be a complementary way of identifying areas for performance indicators to those proposed by the NHS Executive and Department of Health Our suggested indicators are more likely to help turn evidence into everyday practice and to have an impact on the population's healt

DNA sequence of the mouse H-2Dd transplantation antigen gene

The inbred BALB/c mouse has three transplantation antigens, H2-Kd, H2-Ld, and H2-Dd. We present the complete nucleotide sequence of the H2-Dd gene as well as 777 residues of previously unpublished H-2Dd protein sequence. These data complete the sequences of all the BALB/c transplantation antigen genes and permit detailed comparison with each other and with their counterparts from the inbred C57BL/10 mouse. Transplantation antigens may differ from one another by as much as 5%-15% of their amino acid sequence for the external domains. These extensive differences may arise by gene conversion. The H-2D region of the BALB/c mouse encodes the H2-Dd and the H2-Ld genes. Serologic data suggest that at least two additional transplantation antigen molecules, H2-Rd and H2-Md, are encoded in the H-2D region of the major compatibility complex. Paradoxically, gene cloning studies have only identified the H2-Dd and the H2-Ld genes in the H-2D region. A complete DNA sequence of the H2-Dd gene shows that a variety of alternative splice sites exist throughout the gene, which may lead to additional gene products and may explain the multiplicity of H-2D-encoded polypeptides
