Environmental effects on an optical-UV-IR synthesis array
The Moon offers a stable platform with excellent seeing conditions for the Lunar Optical-UV-IR Synthesis Array (LOUISA). Some troublesome aspects of the lunar environment will need to be overcome to realize the full potential of the Moon as an observatory site. Mitigation of negative effects of vacuum, thermal radiation, dust, and micrometeorite impact is feasible with careful engineering and operational planning. Shields against impact, dust, and solar radiation need to be developed. Means of restoring degraded surfaces are probably essential for optical and thermal control surfaces deployed in long-lifetime lunar facilities. Precursor missions should be planned to validate and enhance the understanding of the lunar environment (e.g., dust behavior without and with human presence and to determine environmental effects on surfaces and components. Precursor missions should generate data useful in establishing keepout zones around observatory facilities while rocket launches and landings, mining, and vehicular traffic could be detrimental to observatory operation

Elastomeric microfluidic diode and rectifier work with Newtonian fluids
We report on two microfluidic elastomeric autoregulatory devices—a diode and a rectifier. They exhibit physically interesting and complex nonlinear behaviors (saturation, bias-dependent resistance, and rectification) with a Newtonian fluid. Due to their autoregulatory properties, they operate without active external control. As a result, they enable increased microfluidic device density and overall system miniaturization. The demonstrated diode and rectifier would also be useful components in future microfluidic logic circuitry

Development of a tailored, telehealth intervention to address chronic pain and heavy drinking among people with HIV infection: integrating perspectives of patients in HIV care.
BACKGROUND:
Chronic pain and heavy drinking commonly co-occur and can infuence the course of HIV. There have been no interventions designed to address both of these conditions among people living with HIV (PLWH), and none that have used telehealth methods. The purpose of this study was to better understand pain symptoms, patterns of alcohol use, treatment experiences, and technology use among PLWH in order to tailor a telehealth intervention that addresses these conditions
SUBJECTS:
Ten participants with moderate or greater chronic pain and heavy drinking were recruited from a cohort of patients engaged in HIV-care (Boston Alcohol Research Collaborative on HIV/AIDS Cohort) and from an integrated HIV/primary care clinic at a large urban hospital.
METHODS:
One-on-one interviews were conducted with participants to understand experiences and treatment
of HIV, chronic pain, and alcohol use. Participants’ perceptions of the infuence of alcohol on HIV and chronic pain were explored as was motivation to change drinking. Technology use and treatment preferences were examined in the fnal section of the interview. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and uploaded into NVivo® v12 software for analysis. A codebook was developed based on interviews followed by thematic analysis in which specifc meanings were assigned to codes.
RESULTS:
A number of themes were identifed that had implications for intervention tailoring including: resilience
in coping with HIV; autonomy in health care decision-making; coping with pain, stress, and emotion; understanding treatment rationale; depression and social withdrawal; motives to drink and refrain from drinking; technology use and capacity; and preference for intervention structure and style. Ratings of intervention components indicated that participants viewed each of the proposed intervention content areas as “helpful” to “very helpful”. Videoconferencing was viewed as an acceptable modality for intervention delivery
CONCLUSIONS:
Results helped specify treatment targets and provided information about how to enhance intervention

Suspected Case of Loxoscelism (Spider-bite) in a Dog
Loxoscelism is a disease caused by envenomation by spiders belonging to the genus Loxosceles. Loxoscelism (also known as necrotic arachnidism or gangrenous spot ) has been mentioned as a disease in humans since the 1870\u27S,1 but the etiological agent was not discovered until 1934.2 Since the 1930\u27s there has been an abundance of material published on loxoscelism in humans in South America. However, this literature remained mostly unknown in North America until 1957, when a report implicated Loxosceles reclusa as the possible etiological agent of spider-bite in Missouri and other midwestern states. 2 Subsequently a significant amount of research has been reported in the United States on the condition in humans, but no reports have been found in veterinary journals. The lack of reports in the veterinary literature may be responsible for loxoscelism being overlooked or misdiagnosed in animals
