Elizabeth Bowen and the art of fiction: a study of her theory and practice

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe relationship of Elizabeth Bowen's critical theory to her practice has not yet received detailed treatment. Her essay "Notes on Writing a Novel" (1945), a comprehensive and revealing source of practical formulations on method, reveals her basic traditionalism and her striking individual qualities as well. It serves, furthermore, to bring her novels into relief and it suggests tentative conclusions about her place in contemporary literature. Examined here in detail are the eight main divisions of the essay: Plot, Characters, Scene, Dialogue, Visual Angle, Moral Angle, Advance, and Relevance of special importance in considering each of the eight novels are the following: under Plot, "the non-poetic statement of a poetic truth," "mystification as emphasis," "action of language," and "what-is-to-be-said"; under Characters, "materialization," "unpredictability and inevitability," and "diminution of alternatives"; under Scene, "the mood of the 'Now,'" "categoricalness," "staticness," and "dramatic use"; and under Dialogue, "faked realistic qualities" and "functional use." In light of recent interest in minimal extensions of the Standard Model and gauge singlet scalar cold dark matter, we provide an arXiv preprint of the paper, published as Phys.Rev. D50 (1994) 3637, which presented the first detailed analysis of gauge singlet scalar cold dark matter.Comment: 37 pages, 11 figures, LaTe

Constraints on Neutralino Dark Matter from LEP 2 and Cosmology

A significant lower limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino \chi can be obtained by combining the results from sparticle searches at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 172 GeV with cosmological considerations, if it is assumed that the \chi is stable. Exclusion domains from slepton searches close m_\chi \sim 0 loopholes that were left open by previous lower-energy LEP searches for charginos and neutralinos, leading to the lower limit m_\chi \ga 17 GeV. The constraints on supersymmetric parameter space are strengthened significantly if LEP constraints on supersymmetric Higgs bosons are taken into account, and further if the relic neutralino density is required to fall within the range favoured by astrophysics and cosmology. These bounds are considerably strengthened if universality at the GUT scale is assumed for soft supersymmetry-breaking scalar masses, including those of the Higgs bosons. In this case, the Higgs searches play a dramatic role, and we find that m_\chi \ga 40 GeV. Furthermore, we find that if tan\beta \la 1.7 for \mu<0, or tan\beta \la 1.4 for \mu >0, the cosmological relic density is too large for all values of m_\chi.Comment: Latex, 17 pages incling 3 eps figure
