Absence of molecular mobility on nano-second time scales in amorphous ice phases
High-resolution neutron backscattering techniques are exploited to study the
elastic and quasi-elastic response of the high-density amorphous (HDA), the
low-density amorphous (LDA) and the crystalline ice Ic upon temperature
changes. Within the temperature ranges of their structural stability (HDA at T
> 80 K, LDA at T > 135 K, ice Ic at T < 200 K) the Debye-Waller factors and
mean-square displacements characterise all states as harmonic solids. During
the transformations HDA->LDA (T ~ 100 K), LDA->Ic (T ~ 150K) and the supposed
glass transition with Tg ~ 135 K no relaxation processes can be detected on a
time scale t < 4 ns. It can be concluded from coherent scattering measurements
(D_2O) that LDA starts to recrystallise into ice Ic at T ~ 135 K, i.e. at the
supposed Tg. In the framework of the Debye model of harmonic solids HDA reveals
the highest Debye temperature among the studied ice phases, which is in full
agreement with the lowest Debye level in the generalised density of states
derived from time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments. The elastic results
at low T indicate the presence of an excess of modes in HDA, which do not obey
the Bose statistics
Minimal model for beta relaxation in viscous liquids
Contrasts between beta relaxation in equilibrium viscous liquids and glasses
are rationalized in terms of a double-well potential model with
structure-dependent asymmetry, assuming structure is described by a single
order parameter. The model is tested for tripropylene glycol where it accounts
for the hysteresis of the dielectric beta loss peak frequency and magnitude
during cooling and reheating through the glass transition.Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett. (in press
Ultrasonic Beam Propagation in Turbulent Flow
A study was conducted to examine how a coherent sound burst, such as those used in an ultrasonic flowmeter, crosses a turbulent flow field. Many ultrasonic flowmeters use a time of flight method to determine the mean flow. This measurement method sends sound waves at some angle across a velocity field between two transducers, and the time required for the sound burst to cross this distance is measured on the order of nanoseconds. The system then reverses so that the sound wave burst is sent in the opposite direction. Knowing the distance traveled, the local average sound speed, and the back and forth travel times, the integrated velocity along the sound path can be computed. By using average values for distance and time, an average flowrate may be determined. To perform this analysis, data from several velocity fields were used to determine how a coherent sound burst would travel across the field. Comparisons of the infinitely thin case and the finite thickness case are performed. The study focused on using a modified ray trace method on a velocity field data set obtained using PIV
Structural influence on atomic hopping and electronic states of Pd-based bulk metallic glasses
Atomic motion and electronic structures of Pd–Ni–Cu–P bulk metallic glasses were investigated using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance. The hopping rate of P atoms was determined by the stimulated echo technique. Significant hopping was observed in all alloys well below the glass transition temperature. Increasing the Cu content to above 25 at. % increases P hopping significantly, consistent with the previous finding that the openness of the structure increases with Cu content. In contrast, P hopping is not influenced by changes of local electronic states at P sites, induced by the substitution of Ni by Cu
Analisa Susunan Terminal Udara Sistem Proteksi Petir Menggunakan Metode EGM Eriksson pada Bangunan PT. TELKOM Pekanbaru
Pekanbaru city is a city located in an area that has a large enough lightning density level that is equal to 136 days per year with a density of lightning strikes to the ground (Ng) reached19,5128 strikes/ km2/ year. So it can endanger the high buildings as being in PT. TELKOM Pekanbaru. PT. TELKOM Pekanbaru is the central distribution of data throughout the RiauMainland telecommunication, where it needs a reliable protection system. The aim of this study is to introduce a new method introduced in the IEEE publication, IEEE 998TM-2012, on the lightning protection called EGM Eriksson method. This study uses a Eriksson EGM method to analyze the composition of the air terminal building PT. TELKOM Pekanbaru, which will then determine the area of protection of the external lightning protection system All of this analysis is described in three dimensions using Sketchup 2015 and showed good protection results
The relationship between fragility, configurational entropy and the potential energy landscape of glass forming liquids
Glass is a microscopically disordered, solid form of matter that results when
a fluid is cooled or compressed in such a fashion that it does not crystallise.
Almost all types of materials are capable of glass formation -- polymers, metal
alloys, and molten salts, to name a few. Given such diversity, organising
principles which systematise data concerning glass formation are invaluable.
One such principle is the classification of glass formers according to their
fragility\cite{fragility}. Fragility measures the rapidity with which a
liquid's properties such as viscosity change as the glassy state is approached.
Although the relationship between features of the energy landscape of a glass
former, its configurational entropy and fragility have been analysed previously
(e. g.,\cite{speedyfr}), an understanding of the origins of fragility in these
features is far from being well established. Results for a model liquid, whose
fragility depends on its bulk density, are presented in this letter. Analysis
of the relationship between fragility and quantitative measures of the energy
landscape (the complicated dependence of energy on configuration) reveal that
the fragility depends on changes in the vibrational properties of individual
energy basins, in addition to the total number of such basins present, and
their spread in energy. A thermodynamic expression for fragility is derived,
which is in quantitative agreement with {\it kinetic} fragilities obtained from
the liquid's diffusivity.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Energy landscape - a key concept for the dynamics of glasses and liquids
There is a growing belief that the mode coupling theory is the proper
microscopic theory for the dynamics of the undercooled liquid above a critical
temperature T_c. In addition, there is some evidence that the system leaves the
saddlepoints of the energy landscape to settle in the valleys at this critical
temperature. Finally, there is a microscopic theory for the entropy at the
calorimetric glass transition T_g by Mezard and Parisi, which allows to
calculate the Kauzmann temperature from the atomic pair potentials.
The dynamics of the frozen glass phase is at present limited to
phenomenological models. In the spirit of the energy landscape concept, one
considers an ensemble of independent asymmetric double-well potentials with a
wide distribution of barrier heights and asymmetries (ADWP or Gilroy-Phillips
model). The model gives an excellent description of the relaxation of glasses
up to about T_g/4. Above this temperature, the interaction between different
relaxation centers begins to play a role. One can show that the interaction
reduces the number of relaxation centers needed to bring the shear modulus down
to zero by a factor of three.Comment: Contribution to the III Workshop on Nonequilibrium Phenomena in

Time-temperature superposition in viscous liquids
Dielectric relaxation measurements on supercooled triphenyl phosphite show
that at low temperatures time-temperature superposition (TTS) is accurately
obeyed for the primary (alpha) relaxation process. Measurements on 6 other
molecular liquids close to the calorimetric glass transition indicate that TTS
is linked to an high-frequency decay of the alpha loss, while
the loss peak width is nonuniversal.Comment: 4 page
