    Solitons in the one-dimensional forest fire model

    Fires in the one-dimensional Bak-Chen-Tang forest fire model propagate as solitons, resembling shocks in Burgers turbulence. The branching of solitons, creating new fires, is balanced by the pair-wise annihilation of oppositely moving solitons. Two distinct, diverging length scales appear in the limit where the growth rate of trees, pp, vanishes. The width of the solitons, ww, diverges as a power law, 1/p1/p, while the average distance between solitons diverges much faster as dexp(π2/12p) d \sim \exp({\pi}^2/12p).Comment: 4 pages with 2 figures include

    We demonstrate here real-time imaging of individual vortices in a NbSe2 single crystal using polarized light microscopy.     Holomorphic Currents and Duality in N=1 Supersymmetric Theories

    Twisted supersymmetric theories on a product of two Riemann surfaces possess non-local holomorphic currents in a BRST cohomology. The holomorphic currents act as vector fields on the chiral ring. The OPE's of these currents are invariant under the renormalization group flow up to BRST-exact terms. In the context of electric-magnetic duality, the algebra generated by the holomorphic currents in the electric theory is isomorphic to the one on the magnetic side. For the currents corresponding to global symmetries this isomorphism follows from 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions. The isomorphism between OPE's of the currents corresponding to non-linear transformations of fields of matter imposes non-trivial conditions on the duality map of chiral ring. We consider in detail the SU(Nc)SU(N_c) SQCD with matter in fundamental and adjoint representations, and find agreement with the duality map proposed by Kutasov, Schwimmer and Seiberg.Comment: 19 pages, JHEP3 LaTex, typos correcte

    Anaerobic digestion of animal slurries and plant residues is a valuable technology to produce bioenergy and fertilizers in organic farming systems, while at the same time reducing propagules of weeds and parasites in the input material. However, the digestion changes the quality of the slurry by reducing its content of organic matter and increasing mineral nitrogen (N) levels. This may have profound impact on soil fauna and microorganisms as well as the biogeochemical processes they drive. Organic farmers fear that application of digested materials may have negative implications for soil fertility by reducing the input of organic matter to the soil, compared to fertilizing with traditional animal slurries or green manures. Hence, it is important to gain knowledge about the short- and long-term effects on microflora and carbon (C) balance in soils fertilized with digested slurry

    Classification of Possible Finite-Time Singularities by Functional Renormalization

    Starting from a representation of the early time evolution of a dynamical system in terms of the polynomial expression of some observable f (t) as a function of the time variable in some interval 0 < t < T, we investigate how to extrapolate/forecast in some optimal stability sense the future evolution of f(t) for time t>T. Using the functional renormalization of Yukalov and Gluzman, we offer a general classification of the possible regimes that can be defined based on the sole knowledge of the coefficients of a second-order polynomial representation of the dynamics. In particular, we investigate the conditions for the occurence of finite-time singularities from the structure of the time series, and quantify the critical time and the functional nature of the singularity when present. We also describe the regimes when a smooth extremum replaces the singularity and determine its position and amplitude. This extends previous works by (1) quantifying the stability of the functional renormalization method more accurately, (2) introducing new global constraints in terms of moments and (3) going beyond the ``mean-field'' approximation.Comment: Latex document of 18 pages + 7 ps figure

    Anisotropic thermal expansion and magnetostriction of YNi2_2B2_2C single crystals

    We present results of anisotropic thermal expansion and low temperature magnetostriction measurements on YNi2_2B2_2C single crystals grown by high temperature flux and floating zone techniques. Quantum oscillations of magnetostriction were observed at low temperatures for HcH \| c starting at fields significantly below Hc2H_{c2} (H<0.7Hc2H < 0.7 H_{c2}). Large irreversible, longitudinal magnetostriction was seen in both, in-plane and along the c-axis, directions of the applied magnetic field in the intermediate superconducting state.
