    Can mHealth interventions contribute to increased HPV vaccination uptake? A systematic review

    The objective of this review was to synthesize existing evidence on mobile health (mHealth) interventions geared at improving HPV related knowledge, HPV vaccination intent and HPV vaccination uptake. Between November and December 2019, systematic searches were performed in the databases PubMed, Ebsco/CINAHL, Ebsco/PsycINFO, and Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). We identified 805 articles of which 92 were eligible for inclusion after abstract screening. 19 articles met the inclusion criteria of the review based on full article review and all but one of the included interventions were conducted in the United States. mHealth interventions ranged from text messages, phone calls to interactive voice recordings and software on tablets. All four interventions which attempted to improve HPV knowledge and vaccination intent, reported positive findings, however, only two interventions reported statistically significant improvements between intervention and control groups. 14 interventions reported an increase in HPV vaccination uptake and vaccination series completion among the intervention groups; including when mHealth interventions were compared to control groups or non-mHealth interventions. Some factors noted in the successful interventions included frequency of messages, combinations of multiple interventions including in-person education session, written educational materials, texts alongside call or emails; tailored messages as well as participant's intent to vaccinate at baseline. mHealth interventions potentially show promise as tools in improving short-term vaccination knowledge, intent, and uptake of HPV vaccination. There is however a need to refine components which can promote mHealth interventions’ success as well as for the evaluation of such interventions in different contexts and over time

    EVIDENCE FOR PEER SUPPORT IN REHABILITATION FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

    Objective: To systematically review the literature on evidence for the application of peer support in the rehabilitation of persons with acquired brain injury. Data sources: PubMed, Embase.com, Ebsco/Cinahl, Ebsco/PsycInfo and Wiley/Cochrane Library were searched from inception up to 19 June 2015. Study selection: Randomized controlled trials were included describing participants with acquired brain injury in a rehabilitation setting and peer supporters who were specifically assigned to this role. Data extraction: Two independent reviewers assessed metho-dological quality using the PEDro scale. Cohen’s kappa was calculated to assess agreement between the reviewers. Data synthesis: Two randomized controlled trials could be included, both focussing on patients with traumatic brain injury. The randomized controlled trials included a total of 126 participants with traumatic brain injury and 62 care-givers and suggest a positive influence of peer support for traumatic brain injury survivors and their caregivers in areas of social support, coping, behavioural control and physical quality of life. Conclusion: The evidence for peer support is limited and restricted to traumatic brain injury. Randomized controlled trials on peer support for patients with other causes of acquired brain injury are lacking. It is important to gain more insight into the effects of peer support and the influence of patient and peer characteristics and the intervention protocol

    Efficacy and effectiveness of seasonal and pandemic A (HI NI) 2009 influenza vaccines in low and middle income countries:A systematic review and meta-analysis

    <p>Purpose: Influenza vaccines have been recommended for populations at risk for severe infection in low and middle income countries (LMICs) although knowledge of the evidence-base for their effectiveness and efficacy is limited in these countries. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of the evidence-base for the effectiveness and efficacy of influenza vaccines in LMICs and to explore critical knowledge gaps.</p><p>Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane were searched for seasonal and pandemic A (H1N1) 2009 influenza vaccine effectiveness and efficacy studies performed in LMICs. Eligible studies included RCTs and observational studies, published in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese between 1960 and 2011, which assessed laboratory-confirmed influenza and/or influenza-related outcomes in any population. Risk of bias was assessed by two reviewers independently. Random effects pooled estimates were obtained when sufficient data were available.</p><p>Results: A total of 6465 articles were screened. Forty-one studies were included on seasonal influenza vaccine effectiveness and efficacy and one study on pandemic vaccine effectiveness. In middle income countries (MICs), efficacy of seasonal influenza vaccines was shown against laboratory-confirmed influenza in children (pooled efficacy 72% (95%Cl: 65-77) and 81% (95%CI: 69-89), for one and two years follow-up respectively) and in the elderly (pooled efficacy 43% (95%CI: 25-56) and 58% (95%Cl: 23-78), for live attenuated and inactivated vaccine respectively). Inactivated influenza vaccines were also found to be effective against cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary syndromes.</p><p>Conclusions: Seasonal influenza vaccines can provide protection in children, the elderly and patients with coronary syndromes in MICs, and seem to be equally effective as compared to high income countries. Data for other high risk groups and from low income countries were limited or prone to bias, and are needed to further facilitate evidence-based decision making regarding influenza vaccination in LMICs.     Supporting older patients in working on rehabilitation goals: A scoping review of nursing interventions

    Abstract Background: Nurses are consistently present throughout the rehabilitation of older patients but are apprehensive about performing goal-centred care in the multidisci plinary team. Objectives: The aim of this review was to explore working interventions on setting goals and working with goals designed for nurses in geriatric rehabilitation, and to describe their distinctive features. Methods: We performed a scoping review. We searched MEDLINE and CINAHL through August 4, 2021. Search terms related to the following themes: nurses, reha bilitation, geriatric, goal and method. We used snowballing to find additional. From the selected studies, we systematically extracted data on means, materials and the nursing role and summarized them in a narrative synthesis, using intervention com ponent analysis. Results: The study includes 13 articles, describing 11 interventions which were devel oped for six different aims: improving multidisciplinary team care; increasing patient centredness; improving disease management by patients; improving the psychological, and emotional rehabilitation; increasing the nursing involvement in rehabilitation; or helping patients to achieve goals. The interventions appeal to four aspects of the nurs ing profession: assessing self-care skills incorporating patient's preferences; setting goals with patients, taking into account personal needs and what is medically advis able; linking the needs of the patient with multidisciplinary professional treatment and vice versa; and thus, playing an intermediate role and supporting goal achievement. Conclusions: The interventions show that in goal-centred care, the nurse might play an important unifying role between patients and the multidisciplinary team. With the support of nurses, the patient may become more aware of the rehabilitation process and transfer of ownership of treatment goals from the multidisciplinary team to the patient might be achieved. Not many interventions were found meant to support thenursing role. This may indicate a blind spot in the rehabilitation community to the ad ditional value of its contribution

    Body composition in preterm infants: a systematic review on measurement methods

    Background: There are several methods to measure body composition in preterm infants. Yet, there is no agreement on which method should be preferred. Methods: PubMed, Embase.com, Wiley/Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were searched for studies that reported on the predictive value or validity of body composition measurements in preterms, up to 6 months corrected age. Results: Nineteen out of 1884 identified studies were included. Predictive equations based on weight and length indices, body area circumferences, skinfold thickness, bioelectrical impedance, and ultrasound did not show agreement with body composition measured with air displacement plethysmography (ADP), dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or isotope dilution. ADP agreed well with fat mass density measured by isotope dilution (bias −0.002 g/ml, limits of agreement ±0.012 g/ml, n = 14). Fat mass percentage measured with ADP did not agree well with fat mass percentage measured by isotope dilution (limits of agreement up to ±5.8%) and the bias between measurements was up to 2.2%. DXA, MRI, and isotope dilution were not compared to another reference method in preterms. Conclusions: DXA, ADP, and isotope dilution methods are considered trustworthy validated techniques. Nevertheless, this review showed that these methods may not yield comparable results. Impact: Based on validation studies that were conducted in a limited number of study subjects, weight and length indices, body area circumferences, skinfold thickness, bioelectrical impedance, and ultrasound seem to be a poor representation of body composition in preterm infants.DXA, ADP, and isotope dilution methods are considered trustworthy and validated techniques. Nevertheless, these methods may not yield comparable results

    Systematic review of ventricular peritoneal shunt and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy:a safe combination

    OBJECTIVE Various international and national gastrointestinal guidelines take different positions on whether ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) insertion is a contraindication to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). The objective of this meta - analysis was to try to answer the question of whether VPS insertion is a contraindication to PEG. METHODS A systematic review of the literature was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta - Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Electronic databases PubMed and Embase were searched using variations of the terms "ventriculo-peritoneal shunt" and "percutaneous (endoscopic) gastrostomy."This search resulted in 70 studies, 9 of which were relevant. These were cross-referenced, and 1 additional study was found, resulting in 10 studies in this systematic review. RESULTS The 10 relevant studies in adult cohorts included 208 patients. All studies save one were retrospective and, in general, poor quality. Among the studies with relevant data, there were 26 (12.5% of 208 cases) VPS infections and 4 (4.4% of 90 cases) VPSs that malfunctioned. In 137 patients the VPS had been placed before the PEG tube, with a VPS infection rate of 4.4%. More VPS infections occurred among the 55 patients who first had a PEG and a subsequent VPS (21.8%) and in the 16 patients who had simultaneous PEG tube and VPS placement (50%). The heterogeneity of the studies in this analysis prohibited statistical comparisons of the timing of VPS and PEG tube placement. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review indicated that VPS placement in combination with a PEG has a high but acceptable VPS complication rate. Therefore, VPS insertion should not be considered a contraindication to the placement of a PEG tube. Preferably, a PEG tube should be placed after the VPS. Waiting 7-10 days between VPS insertion and a PEG seems reasonable, but this could not be corroborated in this review

    Prognostic factors in the progression of intervertebral disc degeneration:Which patient should be targeted with regenerative therapies?

    Objective: Possible regenerative treatments for lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (DD) are rapidly emerging. There is consensus that the patient that would benefit most has early-stage DD, with a predicted deterioration in the near future. To identify this patient, the aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors for progression of DD. Study design: Systematic review. Methods: A systematic search was performed on studies evaluating one or more prognostic factor(s) in the progression of DD. The criteria for inclusion were (a) patients diagnosed with DD on MRI, (b) progression of DD at follow-up, and (c) reporting of one or more prognostic factor(s) in progression of DD. Two authors independently assessed the methodological quality of the included studies. Due to heterogeneity in DD determinants and outcomes, only a best-evidence synthesis could be conducted. Results: The search generated 3165 references, of which 16 studies met our inclusion criteria, involving 2.423 patients. Within these, a total of 23 clinical and environmental and 12 imaging factors were identified. There was strong evidence that disc herniation at baseline is associated with progression of DD at follow-up. There is limited evidence that IL6 rs1800795 genotype G/C male was associated with no progression of DD. Some clinical or environmental factors such as BMI, occupation and smoking were not associated with progression. Conclusions: Disc herniation is strongly associated with the progression of DD. Surprisingly, there was strong evidence that smoking, occupation, and several other factors were not associated with the progression of DD. Only one genetic variant may have a protective effect on progression, otherwise there was conflicting or only limited evidence for most prognostic factors. Future research into these prognostic factors with conflicting and limited evidence is not only needed to determine which patients should be targeted by regenerative therapies, but will also contribute to spinal phenotyping
