Variations in the U-Value measurement of a whole dwelling using infrared thermography under controlled conditions
U-values of building elements are often determined using point measurements, where infrared imagery may be used to identify a suitable location for these measurements. Current methods identify that surface areas exhibiting a homogeneous temperatureāaway from regions of thermal bridgingācan be used to obtain U-values. In doing so, however, the resulting U-value is assumed to represent that entire building element, contrary to the information given by the initial infrared inspection. This can be problematic when applying these measured U-values to models for predicting energy performance. Three techniques have been used to measure the U-values of external building elements of a full-scale replica of a pre-1920s U.K. home under controlled conditions: point measurements, using heat flux meters, and two variations of infrared thermography at high and low resolutions. U-values determined from each technique were used to calibrate a model of that building and predictions of the heat transfer coefficient, annual energy consumption, and fuel cost were made. Point measurements and low-resolution infrared thermography were found to represent a relatively small proportion of the overall U-value distribution. By propagating the variation of U-values found using high-resolution thermography, the predicted heat transfer coefficient (HTC) was found to vary between 183 W/K to 235 W/K (Ā±12%). This also led to subsequent variations in the predictions for annual energy consumption for heating (between 4923 kWh and 5481 kWh, Ā±11%); and in the predicted cost of that energy consumption (between Ā£227 and Ā£281, Ā±24%). Joint associations of multiple leisure-time sedentary behaviours and physical activity with obesity in Australian adults
BackgroundTelevision viewing and physical inactivity are independently associated with risk of obesity. However, how the combination of multiple leisure-time sedentary behaviours (LTSB) and physical activity (LTPA) may contribute to the risk of obesity is not well understood. We examined the joint associations of multiple sedentary behaviours and physical activity with the odds of being overweight or obese.MethodsA mail survey collected the following data from adults living in Adelaide, Australia (n = 2210): self-reported height, weight, six LTSB, LTPA and sociodemographic variables. Participants were categorised into four groups according to their level of LTSB (dichotomised into low and high levels around the median) and LTPA (sufficient: ≥ 2.5 hr/wk; insufficient: < 2.5 hr/wk). Logistic regression analysis examined the odds of being overweight or obese (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2) by the combined categories.ResultsThe odds of being overweight or obese relative to the reference category (low sedentary behaviour time and sufficient physical activity) were: 1.54 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20–1.98) for the combination of low sedentary behaviour time and insufficient physical activity; 1.55 (95% CI: 1.20–2.02) for the combination of high sedentary behaviour time and sufficient physical activity; and 2.26 (95% CI: 1.75–2.92) for the combination of high sedentary behaviour time and insufficient physical activity.ConclusionThose who spent more time in sedentary behaviours (but were sufficiently physically active) and those who were insufficiently active (but spent less time in sedentary behaviour) had a similar risk of being overweight or obese. Reducing leisure-time sedentary behaviours may be as important as increasing leisure-time physical activity as a strategy to fight against obesity in adults.<br /
Physical activity, television viewing time and 12 year changes in waist circumference
PURPOSE: Both moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior can be associated with adult adiposity. Much of the relevant evidence is from cross-sectional studies or from prospective studies with relevant exposure measures at a single time point prior to weight gain or incident obesity. This study examined whether changes in MVPA and television (TV) viewing time are associated with subsequent changes in waist circumference, using data from three separate observation points in a large population-based prospective study of Australian adults. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study collected in 1999-2000 (baseline), 2004-05 (Wave 2), and 2011-12 (Wave 3). The study sample consisted of adults aged 25 to 74 years at baseline who also attended site measurement at three time points (n=3261). Multilevel linear regression analysis examined associations of initial five-year changes in MVPA and TV viewing time (from baseline to Wave 2) with 12-year change in waist circumference (from baseline to Wave 3), adjusting for well-known confounders. RESULTS: As categorical predictors, increases in MVPA significantly attenuated increases in waist circumference (p for trend< 0.001). TV viewing time change was not significantly associated with changes in waist circumference (p for trend =0.06). Combined categories of MVPA and TV viewing time changes were predictive of waist circumference increases; compared to those who increased MVPA and reduced TV viewing time, those who reduced MVPA and increased TV viewing time had a 2cm greater increase in waist circumference (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Decreasing MVPA emerged as a significant predictor of increases in waist circumference. Increasing TV viewing time was also influential, but its impact was much weaker than MVPA
A matter of timing: migration and housing access in Metropolitan Johannesburg
The city of Johannesburg lies at the centre of the largest urban conurbation in sub-Saharan Africa. In the past, this conurbation was known by the clumsy acronym 'PWV', which stood for the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging complex. Today, this urban region has the political status of a province and has been re-named 'Gauteng', a popular local name meaning 'place of gold'. A province that is almost entirely urban, Gauteng is home to 7.3 million people: about one-third of the national urban population of 21.8 million.2 At the last census in 1996, the population of Johannesburg itself was about 2.6 million.3 In the national hierarchy, this placed the city of Johannesburg just after the largest city in South Africa, namely Durban (2.8 million) and marginally ahead of Cape Town (also about 2.6)
Perceived neighbourhood environmental attributes and prospective changes in TV viewing time among older Australian adults
There has been a growing interest in environmental initiatives to reduce sedentary behaviour. A few existing studies on this topic are mostly cross-sectional, focused on the general adult population, and examining neighbourhood walkability. Nocturnal pulse oximetry for the detection and prediction of acutemountain sickness: An observational study
Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a well-studied illness defined by clinical features (e.g., headache and nausea), as assessed by the Lake Louise score (LLS). Although obvious in its severe form, early stages of AMS are poorly defined and easily confused with common travel-related conditions. Measurement of hypoxaemia, the cause of AMS, should be helpful, yet to date its utility for identifying AMS susceptibility remains unclear. This study quantified altitude-induced hypoxaemia in individuals during an ascent to 4800 m to determine the utility of nocturnal pulse oximetry measurements for prediction of AMS. Eighteen individuals (36 Ā± 16 years of age) ascended to 4800 m over 12 days. Symptomology of AMS was assessed each morning via LLS criteria, with participants categorized as either AMS-positive (LLS ā„ 3 with headache) or AMS-negative. Overnight peripheral oxygen saturations (ov-Spā¢O2SpO2) were recorded continuously (1 Hz) using portable oximeters. Derivatives of these recordings were compared between AMS-positive and -negative subjects (MannāWhitney U-test). Exploratory analyses (Pearson's) were conducted to investigate relationships between overnight parameters and AMS severity. Overnight derivatives, including ov-Spā¢O2SpO2, heart rate/ov-SpO2Spā¢O2, variance, oxygen desaturation index, hypoxic burden and total sleep time at <80%Ā SpO2Spā¢O2, all differed significantly between AMS-positive and -negative subjects (all P < 0.01), with cumulative/relative frequency plots highlighting these differences visually. Exploratory analysis revealed that ov-Spā¢O2SpO2Ā from 3850 m was correlated with peak LLS at 4800 m (r = 0.58ā0.61). The findings highlight the potential for overnight oximetry to predict AMS susceptibility during ascent to high altitude. Further investigation is required to develop, evaluate and optimize predictive models to improve AMS management and prevention
Weak Lensing with SDSS Commissioning Data: The Galaxy-Mass Correlation Function To 1/h Mpc
(abridged) We present measurements of galaxy-galaxy lensing from early
commissioning imaging data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We measure
a mean tangential shear around a stacked sample of foreground galaxies in three
bandpasses out to angular radii of 600'', detecting the shear signal at very
high statistical significance. The shear profile is well described by a
power-law. A variety of rigorous tests demonstrate the reality of the
gravitational lensing signal and confirm the uncertainty estimates. We
interpret our results by modeling the mass distributions of the foreground
galaxies as approximately isothermal spheres characterized by a velocity
dispersion and a truncation radius. The velocity dispersion is constrained to
be 150-190 km/s at 95% confidence (145-195 km/s including systematic
uncertainties), consistent with previous determinations but with smaller error
bars. Our detection of shear at large angular radii sets a 95% confidence lower
limit , corresponding to a physical radius of
kpc, implying that galaxy halos extend to very large radii. However, it is
likely that this is being biased high by diffuse matter in the halos of groups
and clusters. We also present a preliminary determination of the galaxy-mass
correlation function finding a correlation length similar to the galaxy
autocorrelation function and consistency with a low matter density universe
with modest bias. The full SDSS will cover an area 44 times larger and provide
spectroscopic redshifts for the foreground galaxies, making it possible to
greatly improve the precision of these constraints, measure additional
parameters such as halo shape, and measure the properties of dark matter halos
