    Stability of Infinite Dimensional Interconnected Systems with Impulsive and Stochastic Disturbances

    Some research on the stability with mode constraint for a class of infinite dimensional look-ahead interconnected systems with impulsive and stochastic disturbances is studied by using the vector Lyapunov function approach. Intuitively, the stability with mode constraint is the property of damping disturbance propagation. Firstly, we derive a set of sufficient conditions to assure the stability with mode constraint for a class of general infinite dimensional look-ahead interconnected systems with impulsive and stochastic disturbances. The obtained conditions are less conservative than the existing ones. Secondly, the controller for a class of look-ahead vehicle following systems with the above uncertainties is constructed by the sliding mode control method. Based on the obtained new stability conditions, the domain of the control parameters of the systems is proposed. Finally, a numerical example with simulations is given to show the effectiveness and correctness of the obtained results

    An outbreak of aseptic meningitis caused by a distinct lineage of coxsackievirus B5 in China

    SummaryIn 2009, an outbreak of aseptic meningitis caused by coxsackievirus B5 (CVB5) occurred in China. Epidemiological investigations of this outbreak revealed that the proportion of severe cases (14/43, 33%) was higher than in other outbreaks associated with CVB5 in China. Phylogenetic analysis of the entire VP1 sequences demonstrated that the CVB5 isolates from the severe cases form a distinct lineage belonging to genogroup E with the Shandong isolates of 2009. A substitution of serine (S) to asparagine (N) at amino acid 95 in the VP1 region may be a major virulence determinant for the virus. Our findings suggest that this new lineage of CVB5 is circulating in China. Further genetic studies are needed in order to gain a better insight into the genetic variability of CVB5 isolates and the relationship with pathogenicity

    CYP-omega-hydroxylation-dependent metabolites of arachidonic acid inhibit the basolateral 10pS chloride channel in the rat thick ascending limb

    Metabolites of arachidonic acid influence sodium chloride (NaCl) transport in the thick ascending limb. Because a 10pS Cl channel is the major type of chloride channel in the basolateral membrane of this nephron segment, we explored the effect of arachidonic acid on this channel in cell-attached patches. Addition of 5ΞΌmol arachidonic acid significantly decreased channel activity (a product of channel number and open probability) while linoleic acid had no effect. To determine if this was mediated by acachidonic acid per se or by its metabolites, we measured channel activity in the presence of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin, the selective lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid, and the cytochrome P-450 (CYP)-Ο‰-hydroxylation inhibitor 17-octadecynoic acid. Neither cyclooxygenase nor lipoxygenase inhibition had an effect on basal chloride channel activity; further they failed to abolish the inhibitory effect of arachidonate on the 10pS channel. However, inhibition of CYP-Ο‰-hydroxylation completely abolished the effect of arachidonic acid. The similarity of the effects of 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) and arachidonic acid suggests that the effect of arachidonic acid was mediated by CYP-Ο‰-hydroxylation-dependent metabolites. We conclude that arachidonic acid inhibits the 10pS chloride channel in the basolateral membrane of the medullary thick ascending limb, an effect mediated by the CYP-Ο‰-hydroxylation-dependent metabolite 20-HETE

    Epidemiology, Quality and Reporting Characteristics of Systematic Reviews of Traditional Chinese Medicine Interventions Published in Chinese Journals

    Systematic reviews (SRs) of TCM have become increasingly popular in China and have been published in large numbers. This review provides the first examination of epidemiological characteristics of these SRs as well as compliance with the PRISMA and AMSTAR guidelines.To examine epidemiological and reporting characteristics as well as methodological quality of SRs of TCM published in Chinese journals.Four Chinese databases were searched (CBM, CSJD, CJFD and Wanfang Database) for SRs of TCM, from inception through Dec 2009. Data were extracted into Excel spreadsheets. The PRISMA and AMSTAR checklists were used to assess reporting characteristics and methodological quality, respectively.A total of 369 SRs were identified, most (97.6%) of which used the terms systematic review or meta-analysis in the title. None of the reviews had been updated. Half (49.8%) were written by clinicians and nearly half (47.7%) were reported in specialty journals. The impact factors of 45.8% of the journals published in were zero. The most commonly treated conditions were diseases of the circulatory and digestive disease. Funding sources were not reported for any reviews. Most (68.8%) reported information about quality assessment, while less than half (43.6%) reported assessing for publication bias. Statistical mistakes appeared in one-third (29.3%) of reviews and most (91.9%) did not report on conflict of interest.While many SRs of TCM interventions have been published in Chinese journals, the quality of these reviews is troubling. As a potential key source of information for clinicians and researchers, not only were many of these reviews incomplete, some contained mistakes or were misleading. Focusing on improving the quality of SRs of TCM, rather than continuing to publish them in great quantity, is urgently needed in order to increase the value of these studies

    The Human Serum Metabolome

    Continuing improvements in analytical technology along with an increased interest in performing comprehensive, quantitative metabolic profiling, is leading to increased interest pressures within the metabolomics community to develop centralized metabolite reference resources for certain clinically important biofluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, urine and blood. As part of an ongoing effort to systematically characterize the human metabolome through the Human Metabolome Project, we have undertaken the task of characterizing the human serum metabolome. In doing so, we have combined targeted and non-targeted NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS methods with computer-aided literature mining to identify and quantify a comprehensive, if not absolutely complete, set of metabolites commonly detected and quantified (with today's technology) in the human serum metabolome. Our use of multiple metabolomics platforms and technologies allowed us to substantially enhance the level of metabolome coverage while critically assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of these platforms or technologies.     Robust Exponential Stability Analysis of Switched Neural Networks with Interval Parameter Uncertainties and Time Delays

    In this paper, the stability of switched neural networks (SNNs) with interval parameter uncertainties and time delays is investigated. First, the conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium point of the system are discussed. Second, the average dwell time approach and M-matrix property are employed to obtain conditions to ensure the globally exponential stability of the delayed SNNs under constrained switching. Third, by resorting to inequality technique and the idea of vector Lyapunov function, sufficient condition to ensure the robust exponential stability of the delayed SNNs under arbitrary switching is derived. The form of the constructed Lyapunov functions is simple, which has certain commonality in studying delayed SNNs, and the proposed results not only are explicit but also reveal the relationship between the constrained switching and the arbitrary switching of the SNNs. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and less conservativeness of the main results compared with the existing literature

    Graphene oxide-driven interfacial coupling in laser 3D printed PEEK/PVA scaffolds for bone regeneration

    Blending Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is promising to obtain a composite scaffold combining the excellent biomechanical properties of PEEK and the remarkable degradability of PVA. However, the weak interfacial bonding between nonpolar PEEK and polar PVA would result in poor mechanical properties. In this study, owing to its unique amphiphilic properties, graphene oxide (GO) was employed to enhance the interfacial bonding between PEEK and PVA in PEEK/PVA scaffolds that were fabricated by laser 3D printing. On the one hand, the large Ο€-conjugated structure of GO formed strong Ο€-Ο€ interactions with the benzene rings in PEEK. On the other hand, the oxygen-containing groups of GO formed strong hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl groups of PVA. As a result, the interfacial free energy between PEEK and PVA decreased from 37.4 to 29.6 mJ/m2 according to the harmonic-mean rule, and the PVA phase in PEEK matrix became much fine and uniform, indicating a reinforced interfacial bonding. Correspondingly, the strength and modulus of PEEK/PVA scaffolds increased by 97.16% and 147.06%, respectively, for a GO loading of 1%. Furthermore, the scaffolds exhibited good hydrophilicity and degradability, and promoted cell attachment and proliferation in vitro and osteogenic differentiation and bone regeneration in vivo
