Supporting International Students\u27 Emotional and Social Wellbeing: Addressing Pressing Issues Related to Tuition and Visa Status Anxiety

    Get PDF
The purpose of my research was to engage and build community with international students and to find ways to support them emotionally and socially leading to better mental health outcomes. My research question was: how can I support international college students to alleviate common mental health issues many continue to experience as a result of their international status? This occurs particularly when they must deal with tuition and visa status anxiety. I did three cycles in the research process using online surveys, interviews, and a large debriefing group meeting. Findings indicated that visa status anxiety is one of the most important factors that influence international students’ post-graduation life decisions, lack of financial aid and visa support from USD. Recommendations include offering workshops related to international students’ visa options and post-graduation support, creating more community events to increase students’ sense of belonging, and peer support to relieve loneliness

BRACE: The Breakdancing Competition Dataset for Dance Motion Synthesis

Generative models for audio-conditioned dance motion synthesis map music features to dance movements. Models are trained to associate motion patterns to audio patterns, usually without an explicit knowledge of the human body. This approach relies on a few assumptions: strong music-dance correlation, controlled motion data and relatively simple poses and movements. These characteristics are found in all existing datasets for dance motion synthesis, and indeed recent methods can achieve good results. We introduce a new dataset aiming to challenge these common assumptions, compiling a set of dynamic dance sequences displaying complex human poses. We focus on breakdancing which features acrobatic moves and tangled postures. We source our data from the Red Bull BC One competition videos. Estimating human keypoints from these videos is difficult due to the complexity of the dance, as well as the multiple moving cameras recording setup. We adopt a hybrid labelling pipeline leveraging deep estimation models as well as manual annotations to obtain good quality keypoint sequences at a reduced cost. Our efforts produced the BRACE dataset, which contains over 3 hours and 30 minutes of densely annotated poses. We test state-of-the-art methods on BRACE, showing their limitations when evaluated on complex sequences. Our dataset can readily foster advance in dance motion synthesis. With intricate poses and swift movements, models are forced to go beyond learning a mapping between modalities and reason more effectively about body structure and movements.Comment: ECCV 2022. Calcium ion is an intracellular messenger that plays a central role in signal transduction pathways. Calcineurin B-like proteins (CBLs) and CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) signal network have shown different functions in the Ca2+ signaling process. In this work, we identified the entire soybean (Glycine max) CIPK gene family, which comprised 52 genes and divided into four subgroups (I to IV) based on phylogeny. The gene structural analysis separated these 52 genes into an intron-rich clade and an intron-poor clade. Chromosomal location analysis resulted in the identification of 22 duplicated blocks and six tandem duplication events. Phylogenetic classification of 193 CIPK proteins from representative plant species suggested that the intron-poor clade of CIPKs originated in seed plants. Analysis of global gene expression patterns of soybean CIPK family revealed that most intron-poor soybean CIPK genes are drought-inducible; a finding that was further confirmed using qRT-PCR. Our study provides a foundation for further functional analysis to reveal the roles that CIPKs and more specifically the intron-poor clade play in drought tolerance in soybean

Efficient electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction of thermally optimized carbon black supported zeolitic imidazolate framework nanocrystals under low-temperature

Turning commercially available low-cost conducting carbon black materials into functional electrocatalytic electrode media using simple surface chemical modification is a highly attractive approach. This study reports on remarkably enhanced oxygen electrocatalytic activity of commercially available Ketjenblack (KB) by growing a non-precious cobalt metal-based zeolitic-imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) at room temperature in methanol solution followed by a mild thermolysis. The resulting Co@CoOx nanoparticle decorated nitrogen-doped KB derived from the optimized ZIF-67 : KB weight ratio of hybrid samples at 500-600 °C shows high performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with impressive Eonset and E1/2 values of ∼0.90 and ∼0.83 V (vs. RHE), respectively in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. Such ORR activity is comparable to, or better than many metal@metal-oxide-carbon based electrocatalysts synthesized under elevated carbothermal temperatures and using multicomponent/multistep chemical modification conditions. Therefore, a simple electrocatalyst design reported in this work is an efficient synthesis route that not only utilises earth-abundant carbon black but also comprises scalable room temperature synthesized ZIF-67 following mild thermolysis conditions under 600 °C

Synchronization of Developmental Processes and Defense Signaling by Growth Regulating Transcription Factors

Growth regulating factors (GRFs) are a conserved class of transcription factor in seed plants. GRFs are involved in various aspects of tissue differentiation and organ development. The implication of GRFs in biotic stress response has also been recently reported, suggesting a role of these transcription factors in coordinating the interaction between developmental processes and defense dynamics. However, the molecular mechanisms by which GRFs mediate the overlaps between defense signaling and developmental pathways are elusive. Here, we report large scale identification of putative target candidates of Arabidopsis GRF1 and GRF3 by comparing mRNA profiles of the grf1/grf2/grf3 triple mutant and those of the transgenic plants overexpressing miR396-resistant version of GRF1 or GRF3. We identified 1,098 and 600 genes as putative targets of GRF1 and GRF3, respectively. Functional classification of the potential target candidates revealed that GRF1 and GRF3 contribute to the regulation of various biological processes associated with defense response and disease resistance. GRF1 and GRF3 participate specifically in the regulation of defense-related transcription factors, cell-wall modifications, cytokinin biosynthesis and signaling, and secondary metabolites accumulation. GRF1 and GRF3 seem to fine-tune the crosstalk between miRNA signaling networks by regulating the expression of several miRNA target genes. In addition, our data suggest that GRF1 and GRF3 may function as negative regulators of gene expression through their association with other transcription factors. Collectively, our data provide new insights into how GRF1 and GRF3 might coordinate the interactions between defense signaling and plant growth and developmental pathways

Efficient Cross-Lingual Transfer for Chinese Stable Diffusion with Images as Pivots

Diffusion models have made impressive progress in text-to-image synthesis. However, training such large-scale models (e.g. Stable Diffusion), from scratch requires high computational costs and massive high-quality text-image pairs, which becomes unaffordable in other languages. To handle this challenge, we propose IAP, a simple but effective method to transfer English Stable Diffusion into Chinese. IAP optimizes only a separate Chinese text encoder with all other parameters fixed to align Chinese semantics space to the English one in CLIP. To achieve this, we innovatively treat images as pivots and minimize the distance of attentive features produced from cross-attention between images and each language respectively. In this way, IAP establishes connections of Chinese, English and visual semantics in CLIP's embedding space efficiently, advancing the quality of the generated image with direct Chinese prompts. Experimental results show that our method outperforms several strong Chinese diffusion models with only 5%~10% training data

Genome-Wide Analysis and Expression Profile of the bZIP Transcription Factor Gene Family in Grapevine (Vitis vinifera)

Background Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor gene family is one of the largest and most diverse families in plants. Current studies have shown that the bZIP proteins regulate numerous growth and developmental processes and biotic and abiotic stress responses. Nonetheless, knowledge concerning the specific expression patterns and evolutionary history of plant bZIP family members remains very limited. Results We identified 55 bZIP transcription factor-encoding genes in the grapevine (Vitis vinifera) genome, and divided them into 10 groups according to the phylogenetic relationship with those in Arabidopsis. The chromosome distribution and the collinearity analyses suggest that expansion of the grapevine bZIP (VvbZIP) transcription factor family was greatly contributed by the segment/chromosomal duplications, which may be associated with the grapevine genome fusion events. Nine intron/exon structural patterns within the bZIP domain and the additional conserved motifs were identified among all VvbZIP proteins, and showed a high group-specificity. The predicted specificities on DNA-binding domains indicated that some highly conserved amino acid residues exist across each major group in the tree of land plant life. The expression patterns of VvbZIP genes across the grapevine gene expression atlas, based on microarray technology, suggest that VvbZIP genes are involved in grapevine organ development, especially seed development. Expression analysis based on qRT-PCR indicated that VvbZIP genes are extensively involved in drought- and heat-responses, with possibly different mechanisms. Conclusions The genome-wide identification, chromosome organization, gene structures, evolutionary and expression analyses of grapevine bZIP genes provide an overall insight of this gene family and their potential involvement in growth, development and stress responses. This will facilitate further research on the bZIP gene family regarding their evolutionary history and biological functions

Novel hybrids of natural β-elemene bearing isopropanolamine moieties: synthesis, enhanced anticancer profile, and improved aqueous solubility

A series of novel β-elemene isopropanolamine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antitumor activity. The results indicated that all of the compounds showed stronger antiproliferative activities than β-elemene as well as improved aqueous solubility. In particular dimer 6q showed the strongest cytotoxicity against four tumor cell lines (SGC-7901, HeLa, U87 and A549) with IC50 values ranging from 4.37 to 10.20 μM. Moreover, combination of 6q with cisplatin exhibited a synergistic effect on these cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 1.21 to 2.94 μM, and reversed the resistance of A549/DPP cells with an IC50 value of 2.52 μM. The mechanism study revealed that 6q caused cell cycle arrest at the G2 phase and induced apoptosis of SGC-7901 cells through a mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathway. Further in vivo study in H22 liver cancer xenograft mouse model validated the antitumor activity of 6q with a tumor inhibitory ratio (TIR) of 60.3%, which was higher than that of β-elemene (TIR, 49.1%) at a dose of 60 mg/kg. Altogether, the potent antitumor activity of 6qin vitro and in vivo warranted further preclinical investigation for potential anticancer chemotherapy
