The series of Li[NixMxLi1/3-xMn2/3-x]O2 cathodes, where M is cobalt or chromium with a wide compositional range x from 0 to 0.33, were prepared by hydroxide coprecipitation method with subsequent quenching. The sample structures were investigated using X-ray diffraction results which were indexed completely on the basis of a trigonal structure of space group R3mÂŻ with monoclinic C2/m phase as expected. The morphologies and electrochemical properties of the samples obtained were compared as the value of x and substituted transition metal. The particle sizes of cobalt-substituted Li[NixCoxLi1/3-xMn2/3-x]O2 samples are much smaller than those of the Li[NixCrxLi1/3-xMn2/3-x]O2 system. The electrode containing Li[NixCoxLi1/3-xMn2/3-x]O2 with x = 0.10 delivered a discharge capacity of above 200 mAh/g after 10 cycles due to the activation of Li2MnO3

ObjectiveTo evaluate the usefulness of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in differentiating between benign and malignant LR-3 lesions classified by Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System 2018 (LI-RADS v2018).MethodsRetrospectively analyzed 88 patients with liver nodules confirmed by pathology and classified as LR-3 by LI-RADS. All patients underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced MR examination, and the following patient-related imaging features were collected: tumor size, nonrim APHE, nonperipheral “washout”, enhancing “capsule”, mild-moderate T2 hyperintensity, fat in mass, restricted diffusion, and nodule-in-nodule architecture. We performed ROC analysis and calculated the sensitivity and specificity.ResultsA total of 122 lesions were found in 88 patients, with 68 benign and 54 malignant lesions. The mean ADC value for malignant and benign lesions were 1.01 ± 0.15 × 103 mm2/s and 1.41 ± 0.31 × 103 mm2/s, respectively. The ADC value of malignant lesions was significantly lower than that of benign lesions, p < 0.0001. Compared with other imaging features, ADC values had the highest AUC (AUC = 0.909), with a sensitivity of 92.6% and a specificity of 74.1% for the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions.ConclusionsADC values are useful for differentiating between benign and malignant liver nodules in LR-3 classification, it improves the sensitivity of LI-RADS in the diagnosis of HCC while maintaining high specificity, and we recommend including ADC values in the standard interpretation of LI-RADSv2018

The brain is vulnerable to oxidative stress and inflammation that can occur as a result of aging or neurodegenerative diseases. Our work has sought to identify natural products that regulate heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and to determine their mechanism of action in neurodegenerative diseases. KCHO-1 is a novel herbal therapeutic containing 30% ethanol (EtOH) extracts from nine plants. In this study, we investigated the antineuroinflammatory effects of KCHO-1 in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) treated mouse BV2 microglia. KCHO-1 inhibited the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), iNOS-derived nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2, and COX-2-derived prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia. It also reduced tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ÎČ (IL-1ÎČ), and IL-6 production. This effect was correlated with the suppression of inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B-α (IÎșB-α) phosphorylation and degradation and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-ÎșB) translocation and DNA binding. Additionally, KCHO-1 upregulated HO-1 expression by promoting nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in mouse BV2 microglia. Tin protoporphyrin (SnPP), an HO activity inhibitor, was used to verify the inhibitory effects of KCHO-1 on proinflammatory mediators and proteins associated with HO-1 expression. Our data suggest that KCHO-1 has therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases caused by neuroinflammation

Numerical Investigation and Performance Enhancement by Means of Geometric Sensitivity Analysis and Parametric Tuning of a Radial-Outflow High-Pressure Oil–Gas Turbine

The pressure at the natural gas wellhead typically ranges from tens to hundreds of atmospheres. Traditionally, the wellhead pressure must be throttled into a low level to satisfy the requirement of gathering pipelines, in which a large amount of pressure energy is wasted. The high-pressure oil–gas turbine is a promising approach to convert the wellhead pressure energy into shaft power or electricity. In this paper, a numerical investigation is conducted on a radial-outflow high-pressure oil–gas turbine utilized in a wellhead pressure power generation system. Using the self-defined real oil–gas physical properties and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the internal flow and performance of the high-pressure oil–gas turbine under complex operating conditions are investigated. To improve the turbine flow and performance, a Latin Hypercube Sampling-based parametric tuning is performed on the stator and rotor blade geometries. The application of such an approach effectively adjusts the flow matching and eliminates the flow separation, by which the turbine performance is significantly enhanced

Multipoint Design Optimization of a Radial-Outflow Turbine for Kalina Cycle System Considering Flexible Operating Conditions and Variable Ammonia-Water Mass Fraction

The radial-outflow turbine has advantages due to its liquid-rich gas adaptability when applied in the Kalina ammonia-water cycle system. However, the operational conditions of the turbine often deviate from its design values due to changes of the heat source or the cooling conditions, and such deviates may deteriorate the flow behavior and degrade the turbine performance. To enhance the turbine efficiency at complex conditions for flexible running of the Kalina cycle system, a multipoint design optimization method is developed: the flexible operating has been defined by three critical, dimensionless parameters, which cover a wide range in a 3D operating space; the representative off-design points are identified to define the objective function; and adaptive optimization methods are integrated to permit optimization searching using limited CFD callings. The developed multipoint design method is adopted to improve the turbine performance under complex operating conditions. The obtained results demonstrate that the application of the developed multipoint optimization method effectively eliminates the flow separation at various operating conditions; thus, the turbine off-design performance has been comprehensively improved

Over the past few decades, the amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) technique has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the in vitro/in vivo characteristic of hydrophobic drugs. The low aqueous solubility and poor bioavailability of atorvastatin calcium (ATO), a lipid-lowering drug, present challenges for effective drug delivery. The objective of this work was to improve the aqueous solubility, in vitro dissolution, and oral absorption of ATO with amorphous solid dispersion technique prepared by spray-drying method. The optimized ternary formulation comprising of ATO; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), as a hydrophilic polymer; and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), as a surfactant, at a weight ratio of 1/1/0.1, showed significant improvement in aqueous solubility by ~18-fold compared to that of the free drug, and a cumulative release of 94.09% compared to a release of 59.32% of the free drug. Further, physicochemical studies via scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and powder X-ray diffraction revealed a change from the crystalline state of the free drug to its amorphous state in the ASD. Pharmacokinetic analysis in rats demonstrated 1.68- and 2.39-fold increments in AUC and Cmax, respectively, in the ASD over the free drug. Altogether, hydrophilic carrier-based ASDs prepared by the spray-drying technique represent a promising strategy to improve the biopharmaceutical performance of poorly soluble drugs

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of a polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing for tissue engineering applications for tunica albuginea. Materials and Methods: PCL scaffolds were fabricated by use of a 3D printing system. Two scaffolds were fabricated that differed in the architecture of the lay-down pattern: a 90°PCL scaffold and a 45°PCL scaffold. Mechanical properties were measured to compare tensile strength between the two scaffold types. The scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The scaffolds were seeded with fibroblast cells, and the ability of these scaffolds to support the cells was evaluated by immunofluorescence staining. Results: The PCL scaffolds had well-structured shapes, regular arrays, and good interconnection in SEM images. The horizontal and vertical Young’s modulus coefficients were 13 and 12 MPa for the 90°PCL scaffold and 19 and 21 MPa for the 45°PCL scaffold, respectively. Microscopy images revealed that human fibroblast cells covered the entire scaffold surface. Immunofluorescence staining of ER-TR7 confirmed that the fibroblast cells remained viable and proliferated throughout the time course of the culture. Conclusions: This preliminary study provides experimental evidence for the feasibility of 3D printing of PCL scaffolds for tissue engineering applications of tunica albuginea

Objective. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme of homocysteine metabolism and is closely related to the occurrence of hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the polymorphism of the (MTHFR) C677T and the factors influencing the severity of hypertension. Material and Methods. A total of 985 subjects were enrolled to analyze the polymorphisms of the MTHFR C677T gene by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). 306 people with essential hypertension were selected from 985 subjects to estimate the severity of hypertension by the ordinal multivariate logistical regression model. Results. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 19.5%, 49.95%, and 30.46%, respectively. The allelic frequency of mutant T was 55.43%. The plasma homocysteine level of the homozygous TT in individuals was significantly higher than in those with CC or CT P<0.01. MTHFR677CT genotype, MTHFR677TT genotype, smoking, family history of hypertension, Hcy, and triglycerides (TG) were independent risk factors for the severity of hypertension (OR = 2.29, 2.24, 2.04, 1.81, 1.04, 1.26). Conclusion. MTHFR gene, smoking, family history of hypertension, Hcy, and triglycerides could be important genetic and high-risk factors of the development of severe hypertension in northern Chinese. These factors will contribute to the identification of high-risk populations of hypertension and facilitate the development of hypertension control strategies
