Quantum Transport and Field Induced Insulating States in Bilayer Graphene pnp Junctions

We perform transport measurements in high quality bilayer graphene pnp junctions with suspended top gates. At a magnetic field B=0, we demonstrate band gap opening by an applied perpendicular electric field, with an On/Off ratio up to 20,000 at 260mK. Within the band gap, the conductance decreases exponentially by 3 orders of magnitude with increasing electric field, and can be accounted for by variable range hopping with a gate-tunable density of states, effective mass, and localization length. At large B, we observe quantum Hall conductance with fractional values, which arise from equilibration of edge states between differentially-doped regions, and the presence of an insulating state at filling factor {\nu}=0. Our work underscores the importance of bilayer graphene for both fundamental interest and technological applications.Comment: 4 figures, to appear in Nano Lett. Minor typos correcte

Algebraic Structure and Poisson Integral Method of Snake-Like Robot Systems

Get PDF
The algebraic structure and Poisson's integral of snake-like robot systems are studied. The generalized momentum, Hamiltonian function, generalized Hamilton canonical equations, and their contravariant algebraic forms are obtained for snake-like robot systems. The Lie-admissible algebra structures of the snake-like robot systems are proved and partial Poisson integral methods are applied to the snake-like robot systems. The first integral methods of the snake-like robot systems are given. An example is given to illustrate the results

Objective: To investigate the path analysis of work family conflict, job salary and promotion satisfaction、work engagement to subjective well-being of the primary and middle school principals, and provide advice for enhancing their well-being. Methods: Using convenient sampling, totally 300 primary and middle school principals completed the WFC、JSPSS、UWES and GWB. Results: There were four significant paths influencing the well-being(1) work family conflict could influence subjective well-being directly, the direct effect was -0.275(P<0.001); but the indirect effect through work engagement wasn’t significant. (2) work engagement could influence subjective well-being directly, the direct effect was 0.388(P<0.001); (3) job salary and promotion satisfaction could influence subjective well-being directly, the direct effect was 0.137(P<0.05); (4) job salary and promotion satisfaction could influence subjective well-being through work engagement, the indirect effect was 0.096, the total effect was 0.233; work engagement partially mediated the relation between them. Conclusion: We can enhance the subjective well-being of the primary and middle school principals through balancing work family conflict, improving work engagement, raising incomes and providing development opportunities

Genome sequence and genetic linkage analysis of Shiitake mushroom _Lentinula edodes_

_Lentinula edodes_ (Shiitake/Xianggu) is an important cultivated mushroom. Understanding the genomics and functional genomics of _L. edodes_ allows us to improve its cultivation and quality. Genome sequence is a key to develop molecular genetic markers for breeding and genetic manipulation. We sequenced the genome of _L. edodes_ monokaryon L54A using Roche 454 and ABI SOLiD genome sequencing. Sequencing reads of about 1400Mb were de novo assembled into a 40.2 Mb genome sequence. We compiled the genome sequence into a searchable database with which we have been annotating the genes and analyzing the metabolic pathways. In addition, we have been using many molecular techniques to analyze genes differentially expressed during development. Gene ortholog groups of _L. edodes_ genome sequence compared across genomes of several fungi including mushrooms identified gene families unique to mushroom-forming fungi. We used a mapping population of haploid basidiospores of dikaryon L54 for genetic linkage analysis. High-quality variations such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, insertions, and deletions of the mapping population formed a high-density genetic linkage map. We compared the linkage map to the _L. edodes_ L54A genome sequence and located selected quantitative trait loci. The Shiitake community will benefit from these resources for genetic studies and breeding.&#xa

Suspension and Measurement of Graphene and Bi2Se3 Atomic Membranes

Coupling high quality, suspended atomic membranes to specialized electrodes enables investigation of many novel phenomena, such as spin or Cooper pair transport in these two dimensional systems. However, many electrode materials are not stable in acids that are used to dissolve underlying substrates. Here we present a versatile and powerful multi-level lithographical technique to suspend atomic membranes, which can be applied to the vast majority of substrate, membrane and electrode materials. Using this technique, we fabricated suspended graphene devices with Al electrodes and mobility of 5500 cm^2/Vs. We also demonstrate, for the first time, fabrication and measurement of a free-standing thin Bi2Se3 membrane, which has low contact resistance to electrodes and a mobility of >~500 cm^2/Vs

Highly Durable Direct Methanol Fuel Cell with Double-Layered Catalyst Cathode

Get PDF
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) is one of the key components in direct methanol fuel cells. However, the PEM usually gets attacked by reactive oxygen species during the operation period, resulting in the loss of membrane integrity and formation of defects. Herein, a double-layered catalyst cathode electrode consisting of Pt/CeO2-C as inner catalyst and Pt/C as outer catalyst is fabricated to extend the lifetime and minimize the performance loss of DMFC. Although the maximum power density of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with catalyst cathode is slightly lower than that of the traditional one, its durability is significantly improved. No obvious degradation is evident in the MEA with double-layered catalyst cathode within durability testing. These results indicated that Pt/CeO2-C as inner cathode catalyst layer greatly improved the stability of MEA. The significant reason for the improved stability of MEA is the ability of CeO2 to act as free-radical scavengers
