Concurrence of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Bilateral Parotitis after Minocycline Therapy

    Get PDF
Minocycline is an antibiotic of tetracycline derivatives that is commonly used in the treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris. It has been reported to cause rare adverse events from mild cutaneous eruption to severe forms including drug-induced lupus, serum sickness-like reaction, and hypersensitivity reactions, etc. The risks of adverse events attributed to minocycline have not been ascertained reliably and there are concerns about the safety of minocycline which could possibly result in life-threatening events such as the Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Here we demonstrate an unusual case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome in conjunction with bilateral parotitis after the intake of minocycline in a Korean boy suggesting discreet use of the drug

An Enhanced Double-layered P2P System for the Reliability in Dynamic Mobile Environments

    Get PDF
The double-layered peer-to-peer (P2P) systems were introduced to reduce the network traffic in MANET. The peers in the systems are classified into super peers and sub-peers. Super peers manage their neighboring sub-peers. The network communications in the systems are done mostly among super peers. In case when a pair of neighboring super peers is too far to communicate, one or two of their sub-peers bridges the super peers. However, the double-layered systems need to improve the reliability that guarantees communications among peers. In this paper, we propose a new double-layered P2P system in which super peers are selected based on their mobility. We also propose two reliability improvement schemes, the avoidance scheme and the role changing scheme. They are applied to the proposed system to enhance the reliability of the system. The proposed system is implemented in the dynamic mobile P2P environment where peers may join and leave the network dynamically and the number of peers varies. The various experiments are done with the Network Simulator-2 v2.33. The experimental results show that the proposed system with the two schemes improved the reliability over other double-layered systems in terms of the failure rate by up to 25 %, while increasing the network traffic marginally

    Get PDF
Background Posttraumatic anger is a commonly reported emotion among people who have experienced traumatic events. The current study aimed to demonstrate the reliability and validity of the South Korean version of the DAR-5 (DAR-5-K). The DAR-5 is a single scale with 5 items which measures posttraumatic anger. The DAR-5 is composed of five items that measure anger frequency, intensity, duration, aggression, and its interference with social relations. Methods Data were collected from 814 South Korean adults who had experienced traumatic events and participated in the study and analyzed via the combination of exploratory factor analysis (nā€‰=ā€‰405) and confirmatory factor analysis (nā€‰=ā€‰409). Results Results supported the one-factor structure, as reported in previous validation studies. The scale demonstrated robust internal reliability and concurrent validity with measures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. The DAR-5 cut-off score of 12 that was established in the original validation study successfully differentiated high from low scorers with regard to PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. Conclusion The results confirm that the DAR-5-K is a brief and psychometrically robust measure of anger that can be used to examine South Korean adults who have experienced traumatic events

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a ubiquitous environmental pollutant reported to be an endocrine disruptor, is used in many industrial and consumer products. Although the adverse effects of PFOA on the reproductive health of animals and humans have been widely reported, most studies have focused on assessing the anatomical features and conventional histology of adult gonads. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms activated in the hypothalamus and gonads following PFOA exposure during the pre- and postnatal periods are not clear. This study used a mouse model to evaluate the effects of PFOA exposure on the alteration of molecular mechanisms in the hypothalamus and gonads during the prenatal and postpartum periods. Changes in gene and protein expression following PFOA exposure were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. Kisspeptin 1 and gonadotropin-releasing hormone expression in the hypothalamus of female and male mouse pups was significantly decreased. Additionally, Cyp17a1 expression was upregulated in male offspring testes, while Cyp17a1 and Cyp19a1 expression was downregulated in female offspring ovaries. Changes at the molecular level due to PFOA exposure in the early stages of development did not show sex-related differences in the hypothalamus; however, such differences were confirmed in the gonads. These results could be used as basic data to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the reproductive dysfunction caused by PFOA exposure in the early stages of embryonic development.

Purpose Renal injury occurs in up to 5% of trauma cases and the kidney is the third most wounded abdominal organ. The study objective was to analyze clinical characteristics of patients with blunt renal trauma and review the treatment of high-grade blunt renal injuries. Methods The medical charts of trauma patients who visited Haeundae Paik Hospital between March 2010 and February 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Data on demographics, injury patterns, clinical presentation, management, and outcomes were analyzed. Results A total of 68 patients with renal trauma were included in this study. The most common renal injury was Grade III (n = 27, 39.7%). Falling was the predominant mechanism of injury (n = 33, 48.5%), and 23.5% (n = 16) of patients sustained isolated renal trauma. Organ damage related to kidney injury included chest injury (57.4%, n = 39) and abdominal or pelvic content injury (48.5%, n = 33). The overall mortality rate was 2.9% (n = 2). There were 45 cases of high-grade renal trauma (AAST Kidney injury scale Grade IIIā€“V). There was no statistical difference in the outcomes of high-grade (n = 44, 97.8%) and low-grade (n = 23, 100%) renal trauma patients who received nonoperative treatment (p = 0.511). Variables did not differ significantly, except for the injury severity score which was statistically significantly different between low-grade and high-grade renal trauma patients (p = 0.001). Conclusion Most patients with traumatic renal injury, even those with high-grade injury, can be managed by nonoperative treatment, and have a good prognosis

Mathematical Modeling of the Impact of Actin and Keratin Filaments onĀ Keratinocyte Cell Spreading

    Get PDF
AbstractKeratin intermediate filaments (IFs) form cross-linked arrays to fulfill their structural support function in epithelial cells and tissues subjected to external stress. How the cross-linking of keratin IFs impacts the morphology and differentiation of keratinocytes in the epidermis and related surface epithelia remains an open question. Experimental measurements have established that keratinocyte spreading area is inversely correlated to the extent of keratin IF bundling in two-dimensional culture. In an effort to quantitatively explain this relationship, we developed a mathematical model in which isotropic cell spreading is considered as a first approximation. Relevant physical properties such as actin protrusion, adhesion events, and the corresponding response of lamellum formation at the cell periphery are included in this model. Through optimization with experimental data that relate time-dependent changes in keratinocyte surface area during spreading, our simulation results confirm the notion that the organization and mechanical properties of cross-linked keratin filaments affect cell spreading; in addition, our results provide details of the kinetics of this effect. These inĀ silico findings provide further support for the notion that differentiation-related changes in the density and intracellular organization of keratin IFs affect tissue architecture in epidermis and related stratified epithelia
