MPMQA: Multimodal Question Answering on Product Manuals
Visual contents, such as illustrations and images, play a big role in product
manual understanding. Existing Product Manual Question Answering (PMQA)
datasets tend to ignore visual contents and only retain textual parts. In this
work, to emphasize the importance of multimodal contents, we propose a
Multimodal Product Manual Question Answering (MPMQA) task. For each question,
MPMQA requires the model not only to process multimodal contents but also to
provide multimodal answers. To support MPMQA, a large-scale dataset PM209 is
constructed with human annotations, which contains 209 product manuals from 27
well-known consumer electronic brands. Human annotations include 6 types of
semantic regions for manual contents and 22,021 pairs of question and answer.
Especially, each answer consists of a textual sentence and related visual
regions from manuals. Taking into account the length of product manuals and the
fact that a question is always related to a small number of pages, MPMQA can be
naturally split into two subtasks: retrieving most related pages and then
generating multimodal answers. We further propose a unified model that can
perform these two subtasks all together and achieve comparable performance with
multiple task-specific models. The PM209 dataset is available at

Nonlinear Hall Effects in Strained Twisted Bilayer WSe
Recently, it has been pointed out that the twisting of bilayer WSe would
generate topologically non-trivial flat bands near the Fermi energy. In this
work, we show that twisted bilayer WSe (tWSe) with uniaxial strain
exhibits a large nonlinear Hall (NLH) response due to the non-trivial Berry
curvatures of the flat bands. Moreover, the NLH effect is greatly enhanced near
the topological phase transition point which can be tuned by a vertical
displacement field. Importantly, the nonlinear Hall signal changes sign across
the topological phase transition point and provides a way to identify the
topological phase transition and probe the topological properties of the flat
bands. The strong enhancement and high tunability of the NLH effect near the
topological phase transition point renders tWSe and related moire materials
new platforms for rectification and second harmonic generations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Comments are welcom
Synthesis and Optical Performances of a Waterborne Polyurethane-Based Polymeric Dye
A waterborne polyurethane-based polymeric dye (WPU-CFBB) was synthesized by anchoring 1, 4-bis(methylamino)anthraquinone (CFBB) to waterborne polyurethane chains. The number molecular weight, glass transition temperature, and average emulsion particle size for the polymeric dye were determined, respectively. This polymeric dye exhibited intriguing optical behaviors. The polymeric dye engendered two new absorption bands centered at about 520 nm and 760 nm if compared with CFBB in UV-vis spectra. The 760 nm peak showed hypsochromic shift with the decrease of average particle sizes. The polymeric dye dramatically demonstrated both hypsochromic and bathochromic effects with increasing temperature. The fluorescence intensity of the polymeric dye was much higher than that of CFBB. It was found that the fluorescence intensities would be enhanced from 20°C to 40°C and then decline from 40°C to 90°C. The fluorescence of the polymeric dye emulsion was very stable and was not sensitive to quenchers
