    Enhancing Model Performance in Multilingual Information Retrieval with Comprehensive Data Engineering Techniques

    In this paper, we present our solution to the Multilingual Information Retrieval Across a Continuum of Languages (MIRACL) challenge of WSDM CUP 2023\footnote{https://project-miracl.github.io/}. Our solution focuses on enhancing the ranking stage, where we fine-tune pre-trained multilingual transformer-based models with MIRACL dataset. Our model improvement is mainly achieved through diverse data engineering techniques, including the collection of additional relevant training data, data augmentation, and negative sampling. Our fine-tuned model effectively determines the semantic relevance between queries and documents, resulting in a significant improvement in the efficiency of the multilingual information retrieval process. Finally, Our team is pleased to achieve remarkable results in this challenging competition, securing 2nd place in the Surprise-Languages track with a score of 0.835 and 3rd place in the Known-Languages track with an average nDCG@10 score of 0.716 across the 16 known languages on the final leaderboard

    Cardiovascular Autonomic Neuropathy Is an Independent Risk Factor for Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

    Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the association between cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in type 2 diabetes patients. Methods. 315 type 2 diabetes patients from inpatients of Drum Tower Hospital were included and classified into no CAN (NCAN), possible CAN (PCAN), and definite CAN (DCAN) based on cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests. The left ventricular diastolic function was assessed by tissue Doppler imaging echocardiography. Results. The distribution of NCAN, PCAN, and DCAN was 11.4%, 51.1%, and 37.5%, respectively. The proportion of LVDD increased among the groups of NCAN, PCAN, and DCAN (39.4%, 45.3%, and 68.0%, = 0.001). Patients with DCAN had higher filling pressure ( / ratio) (10.9 ± 2.7 versus 9.4 ± 2.8, = 0.013) and impaired diastolic performance ( ) (6.8 ± 1.7 versus 8.6±2.4, = 0.004) compared with NCAN. CAN was found to be an independent risk factor for LVDD from the multivariate regression analysis (OR = 1.628, = 0.009, 95% CI 1.131-2.344). Conclusions. Our results indicated that CAN was an independent risk marker for the presence of LVDD in patients with diabetes. Early diagnosis and treatment of CAN are advocated for preventing LVDD in type 2 diabetes

    Protein-energy malnutrition and worse outcomes after major cancer surgery: A nationwide analysis

    BackgroundProtein-energy malnutrition (PEM) has been recognized as a poor prognostic factor in many clinical issues. However, nationwide population studies concerning the impact of PEM on outcomes after major cancer surgery (MCS) are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the postoperative outcomes associated with PEM following MCS.MethodsBy using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database, data of patients undergoing MCS including colectomy, cystectomy, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, hysterectomy, lung resection, pancreatectomy, or prostatectomy were analyzed retrospectively from 2009 to 2015, resulting in a weighted estimate of 1,335,681 patients. The prevalence trend of PEM, as well as mortality and major complications after MCS were calculated. Multivariable regression analysis was applied to estimate the impact of PEM on postoperative outcomes after MCS.ResultsPEM showed an estimated annual percentage increase of 7.17% (95% confidence interval (CI): 4-10.44%) from 2009 to 2015, which contrasts with a 4.52% (95% CI: -6.58–2.41%) and 1.21% (95% CI: -1.85–0.56%) annual decrease in mortality and major complications in patients with PEM after MCS. PEM was associated with increased risk of mortality (odds ratio (OR)=2.26; 95% CI: 2.08-2.44; P < 0.0001), major complications (OR=2.46; 95% CI: 2.36-2.56; P < 0.0001), higher total cost (35814[35814 [22292, 59579]vs.59579] vs. 16825 [11393,11393, 24164], P < 0.0001), and longer length of stay (14 [9-21] days vs. 4 [2-7] days, P < 0.0001), especially in patients underwent prostatectomy, hysterectomy and lung resection.ConclusionsPEM was associated with increased worse outcomes after major cancer surgery. Early identification and timely medical treatment of PEM for patients with cancer are crucial for improving postoperative outcomes

    Theoretical Methodology of a High-Flux Coal-Direct Chemical Looping Combustion System

    This study, as an extension of our previous experimental tests, presented a mechanism analysis of air reactor (AR) coupling in a high-flux coal-direct chemical looping combustion (CDCLC) system and provided a theoretical methodology to the system optimal design with favorable operation stability and low gas leakages. Firstly, it exhibited the dipleg flow diagrams of the CDCLC system and concluded the feasible gas⁻solid flow states for solid circulation and gas leakage control. On this basis, the semi-theoretical formulas of gas leakages were proposed to predict the optimal regions of the pressure gradients of the AR. Meanwhile, an empirical formula of critical sealing was also developed to identify the advent of circulation collapse so as to ensure the operation stability of the whole system. Furthermore, the theoretical methodology was applied in the condition design of the cold system. The favorable gas⁻solid flow behaviors together with the good control of gas leakages demonstrated the feasibility of the theoretical methodology. Finally, the theoretical methodology was adopted to carry out a capability assessment of the high-flux CDCLC system under a hot state in terms of the restraint of gas leakages and the stability of solid circulation

    Cartilage Defect Treatments: With or without Cells? Mesenchymal Stem Cells or Chondrocytes? Traditional or Matrix-Assisted? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses

    Articular cartilage defects have been addressed by using multiple strategies. In the last two decades, promising new strategies by using assorted scaffolds and cell sources to induce tissue regeneration have emerged, such as autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) and mesenchymal stem cell implantation (MSCI). However, it is still controversial in the clinical strategies when to choose these treatments. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses to compare the efficacy and safety of different cartilage treatments. In our study, 17 studies were selected to compare different treatments for cartilage defects. The results of meta-analyses indicated that cell-based cartilage treatments showed significant better efficacy than cell-free treatments did (OR: 4.27, 95% CI: 2.19–8.34; WMD: 10.11, 95% CI: 2.69–16.53). Another result indicated that MACT had significant better efficacy than traditional ACI did (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.30–0.82). Besides, the incidence of graft hypertrophy of MACT was slightly lower than that of traditional ACI (OR: 2.43, 95% CI: 1.00–5.94). Current data showed that the cell-based treatments and MACT are better options for cartilage treatments, but more well-designed comparative studies are still needed to enhance our understanding of different treatments for cartilage defects

    Protective Immunity against <i>Chlamydia psittaci</i> Lung Infection Induced by a DNA Plasmid Vaccine Carrying <i>CPSIT_p7</i> Gene Inhibits Dissemination in BALB/c Mice

    Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci), a zoonotic pathogen, poses a potential threat to public health security and the development of animal husbandry. Vaccine-based preventative measures for infectious diseases have a promising landscape. DNA vaccines, with many advantages, have become one of the dominant candidate strategies in preventing and controlling the chlamydial infection. Our previous study showed that CPSIT_p7 protein is an effective candidate for a vaccine against C. psittaci. Thus, this study evaluated the protective immunity of pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 against C. psittaci infection in BALB/c mice. We found that pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 can induce strong humoral and cellular immune responses. The IFN-γ and IL-6 levels in the infected lungs of mice immunized with pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 reduced substantially. In addition, the pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 vaccine diminished pulmonary pathological lesions and reduced the C. psittaci load in the lungs of infected mice. It is worth noting that pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 suppressed C. psittaci dissemination in BALB/c mice. In a word, these results demonstrate that the pcDNA3.1(+)/CPSIT_p7 DNA vaccine has good immunogenicity and immunity protection effectiveness against C. psittaci infection in BALB/c mice, especially pulmonary infection, and provides essential practical experience and insights for the development of a DNA vaccine against chlamydial infection

    Convolutional neural network for cell classification using microscope images of intracellular actin networks.

    Automated cell classification is an important yet a challenging computer vision task with significant benefits to biomedicine. In recent years, there have been several studies attempted to build an artificial intelligence-based cell classifier using label-free cellular images obtained from an optical microscope. Although these studies showed promising results, such classifiers were not able to reflect the biological diversity of different types of cell. While in terms of malignant cell, it is well-known that intracellular actin filaments are altered substantially. This is thought to be closely related to the abnormal growth features of tumor cells, their ability to invade surrounding tissues and also to metastasize. Therefore, being able to classify different types of cell based on their biological behaviors using automated technique is more advantageous. This article reveals the difference in the actin cytoskeleton structures between breast normal and cancer cells, which may provide new information regarding malignant changes and be used as additional diagnostic marker. Since the features cannot be well detected by human eyes, we proposed the application of convolutional neural network (CNN) in cell classification based on actin-labeled fluorescence microscopy images. The CNN was evaluated on a large number of actin-labeled fluorescence microscopy images of one human normal breast epithelial cell line and two types of human breast cancer cell line with different levels of aggressiveness.
