Sorting photons by radial quantum number
The Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes constitute a complete basis set for
representing the transverse structure of a {paraxial} photon field in free
space. Earlier workers have shown how to construct a device for sorting a
photon according to its azimuthal LG mode index, which describes the orbital
angular momentum (OAM) carried by the field. In this paper we propose and
demonstrate a mode sorter based on the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) to
efficiently decompose the optical field according to its radial profile. We
experimentally characterize the performance of our implementation by separating
individual radial modes as well as superposition states. The reported scheme
can, in principle, achieve unit efficiency and thus can be suitable for
applications that involve quantum states of light. This approach can be readily
combined with existing OAM mode sorters to provide a complete characterization
of the transverse profile of the optical field

ShenQiWan ameliorates renal injury in type 2 diabetic mice by modulating mitochondrial fusion and endoplasmic reticulum stress
Background: ShenQiWan is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy, which is closely related to mitochondrial fusion and endoplasmic reticulum stress. This study aimed to investigate the intervention effect and molecular mechanisms of ShenQiWan on renal injury in KKAy mice. Methods: C57BL/6J mice (11 weeks old) were fed a regular diet upon arrival, while KKAy mice (11 weeks old) were fed a high-fat diet upon arrival. At 12 weeks of age, KKAy mice with random blood glucose ≥13.9 mmol/L were identified as diabetic mice and randomly divided into the model group (n = 30) and the treatment group (n = 30), while C57BL/6J mice of 12 weeks old (n = 30) served as the control group. The treatment group received daily aqueous decoction of ShenQiWan (13.5 g/kg), while the control group and model group received daily equal amounts of saline from 12 weeks old to 24 weeks old. The general status of mice was observed regularly, and fasting blood glucose and 24-hour urine microalbumin were measured. Ten mice were euthanized in each group at the age of 16, 20, and 24 weeks, serum samples were used for biochemical indexes and kidney tissues were used for morphological studies. GRP78, OPA1, MFN1, MFN2 mRNA and protein expression were detected by Real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results: The mice in the model group exhibited symptoms of lethargy, slow movement, obesity, polyuria and proteinuria. Morphological observation revealed pathological changes, including thickening of the glomerular basement membrane and interstitial fibrosis. After treatment with ShenQiWan, the fasting blood glucose level of KKAy mice was significantly reduced, urinary albuminuria was decreased, serum biochemical indexes were improved, renal tissue pathological changes were significantly alleviated. The results also showed a significant reduction in the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress-related factor GRP78 and an increase in the expression of mitochondrial fusion-related factors OPA1, MFN1 and MFN2 after treatment with ShenQiWan.Conclusion: ShenQiWan can protect diabetic mice from renal damage by modulating mitochondrial fusion and alleviating endoplasmic reticulum stress, exerting its protective effects
Gastrodin attenuates renal injury and collagen deposition via suppression of the TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling pathway based on network pharmacology analysis
Background: Gastrodin has been widely used clinically in China as an antihypertensive drug. However, its effect on hypertensive renal injury is yet to be elucidated. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of gastrodin on hypertensive renal injury and its underlying mechanisms by network pharmacology analysis and validation in vivo and in vitro. Methods: A total of 10 spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were randomly categorized into the following two groups: SHR and SHR + Gastrodin groups. Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were used as the control group (n = 5). The SHR + Gastrodin group was intragastrically administered gastrodin (3.5 mg/kg/day), and the rats in both WKY and SHR groups were intragastrically administered an equal amount of double-distilled water for 10 weeks. Hematoxylin-eosin, Masson’s trichrome, and Sirius red staining were used to detect the pathological changes and collagen content in the renal tissues. Network pharmacology analysis was performed to explore its potential targets and related pathways. In vitro, the CCK-8 assay was used to determine the cell viability. Immunohistochemistry and western-blotting analyses were employed to assess the protein expression associated with renal fibrosis and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) pathway-related proteins in the renal tissues or in TGF-β1-stimulated rat kidney fibroblast cell lines (NRK-49F).Results: Gastrodin treatment attenuates renal injury and pathological alterations in SHRs, including glomerular sclerosis and atrophy, epithelial cell atrophy, and tubular dilation. Gastrodin also reduced the accumulation of collagen in the renal tissues of SHRs, which were confirmed by downregulation of α-SMA, collagen I, collagen III protein expression. Network pharmacology analysis identified TGFB1 and SMAD2 as two of lead candidate targets of gastrodin on against hypertensive renal injury. Consistently, gastrodin treatment downregulated the increase of the protein expression of TGF-β1, and ratios of both p-Smad2/Smad2 and p-Samd3/Smad3 in renal tissues of SHRs. In vitro, gastrodin (25–100 μM) treatment significantly reversed the upregulation of α-SMA, fibronectin, collagen I, as well as p-Smad2 and p-Smad3 protein expressions without affecting the cell viability of TGF-β1 stimulated NRK-49F cells. Conclusion: Gastrodin treatment significantly attenuates hypertensive renal injury and renal fibrosis and suppresses TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling in vivo and in vitro
Experimental Research and Finite Element Analysis on Mechanical Property of SFRC T-Beam
Research on mechanical property of SFRC was done through experiments of two SFRC T-beams and one concrete T-beam, while the influences of different volume fractions of steel fibers on integral rigidity, ultimate shear capacity, and the crack distribution characteristics were analyzed. ANSYS finite element software was used to simulate the tests and it was found that there was good conformation between the results of ANSYS simulation and tests. The test results and finite element software simulation both showed that the incorporation of steel fibers in the concrete can increase the integral rigidity and ultimate shear capacity, while partially reducing the propagation of cracks effectively. It was also proved that it is reliable to simulate SFRC T-beam by ANSYS software
Laccase Biosensor Based on Electrospun Copper/Carbon Composite Nanofibers for Catechol Detection
The study compared the biosensing properties of laccase biosensors based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and copper/carbon composite nanofibers (Cu/CNFs). The two kinds of nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and carbonization under the same conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to investigate the morphologies and structures of CNFs and Cu/CNFs. The amperometric results indicated that the Cu/CNFs/laccase(Lac)/Nafion/glass carbon electrode (GCE) possessed reliable analytical performance for the detection of catechol. The sensitivity of the Cu/CNFs/Lac/Nafion/GCE reached 33.1 μA/mM, larger than that of CNFs/Lac/Nafion/GCE. Meanwhile, Cu/CNFs/Lac/Nafion/GCE had a wider linear range from 9.95 × 10−6 to 9.76 × 10−3 M and a lower detection limit of 1.18 μM than CNFs/Lac/Nafion/GCE. Moreover, it exhibited a good repeatability, reproducibility, selectivity and long-term stability, revealing that electrospun Cu/CNFs have great potential in biosensing
Experimental Study on Flexural Bearing Characteristics of Ceramsite Concrete Beams after Creep at Different Curing Ages
Ceramsite concrete is increasingly used for structural applications due to its lightweight, high-strength, and high-temperature resistance advantages. However, research into the postcreep properties of ceramsite concrete has yet to keep pace with other areas. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the flexural bearing properties of ceramsite concrete beams after creep and make recommendations for future research. To study the flexural load-bearing performance of ceramsite concrete beams after creep, a comparison test was carried out on four ceramsite concrete beams subjected to 200 d creep loading and four beams subjected to static load without creep loading for four curing ages. The results showed that, at first, the deformation capacity of the ceramsite concrete beams would increase after creep and the toughness and energy absorption capacity would also strengthen. Secondly, the creep could improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the ceramsite concrete beams. It was an approximate 10% increase after 200 d creep. Then, the stiffness, toughness, and ultimate bearing capacity of the ceramsite concrete beams would increase gradually with the increase of the curing age after the creep. In addition, the ultimate bearing capacity of the ceramsite concrete beams increased gradually with the increase of the curing age. The growth rate was faster in the early stage, slower after 120 d, and slower and more stable after 228 d. Finally, creep could cause the maximum crack width and depth of the ceramsite concrete beams decreased and the number of cracks would grow with the curing age. The conclusions obtained in the study provide a theoretical basis for the design of light aggregate structures for creep
Processing and characterization of phosphate glass fiber/polylactic acid commingled yarn composites for commercial production
This study investigated the production of phosphate glass fiber/polylactic acid (PGF/PLA) commingled yarns, textiles and composites for biomedical applications. The PGF volume contents of the composites investigated were 25% and 40%. Plain weave textiles with yarn counts of 10 warp/cm and 6 weft/cm were produced using a commercial weaving machine. An orthogonal array design (OAD) was employed as a statistical method to investigate the effects of compression molding parameters (processing temperature, preheating time, compression time, and pressure) on flexural strength and porosity of PGF/PLA textile composites. Processing temperature showed the most significant effect in achieving maximum laminate flexural strength and molecular weight of PLA. Processing models were developed using regression techniques to predict the laminate flexural strength and the molecular weight of PLA. Composites with fiber contents of 25 and 40 vol% produced using optimized processing conditions identified by the processing models, provided flexural strengths of 236 MPa and 293 MPa, respectively
Digital subtraction angiography-guided percutaneous sclerotherapy of venous malformations with pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol in the maxillofacial region
Purpose: The present study evaluated the safety and efficacy of digital subtraction angiography-guided percutaneous sclerotherapy of venous malformations (VMs) with pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol in the maxillofacial region. We present our safe and novel method for treating venous malformations. Patients and Methods: A total of 20 patients (21 locations) diagnosed with VMs were enrolled in the present trial. Evaluated by preoperative digital subtraction angiography, the lesions were categorized into 4 types according to the venous drainage features. Of the 20 patients, 5 had type I VMs, 5 had type II, 6 had type III and 3 had type IV VMs. One patient had type I and type III VMs in different locations of the maxillofacial region. For types I and II lesions, pingyangmycin sclerotherapy was performed. Multistage sclerotherapy with absolute ethanol and pingyangmycin was performed on types III and IV lesions. Results: After evaluation and guided by preoperative digital subtraction angiography, all the patients were treated successfully and safely. Of the 20 patients, the clinical outcome was excellent in 13, good in 6, and fair in 1. No disease recurrence was noted during the follow-up evaluations (range 6 to 25 months, median 13.55). The complications were fever in 5 patients after the first session of sclerotherapy, incomplete facial paralysis in 1, swelling in 1, and ulceration in 3. No major complications were observed. Conclusions: Digital subtraction angiography-guided phlebography of VMs in the maxillofacial region is one of the approaches to classify VMs using anatomic and hemodynamic features. A strong association was seen between the type of VM and the approach of sclerotherapy. Percutaneous sclerotherapy using pingyangmycin and/or absolute ethanol is a safe and effective method of treating symptomatic VMs. © 2010 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
