    Connection between visual arts and music: The painting and music of I-Uen Wang Hwang

    This document explores the connection between the visual arts and music, particularly focusing on the similarity between visual and aural artistic expression by analyzing two sets of piano pieces composed by I-Uen Wang Hwang, a contemporary Taiwanese-American composer and artist. The piano pieces are Dream Garden, Series I and II (2000-2004) and Preludes for Piano (2016). Series I of Dream Garden contains two piano solo compositions based on a series of Hwang’s own watercolor works. Each composition has an analogous painting: “The Horn of the Plenty” and “Butterfly Orchid”. Series II includes two compositions written for two pianos: “Red and White” and “Fireworks”, which are also based on her watercolor paintings of flowers. “Each piano part has its own individual character with different timbres and rhythms, as if each part represented a different color or texture of the painting.”[1] Preludes for Piano is a new composition set that Hwang composed in 2016. There are three preludes, each prelude based on an abstract acrylic painting. My intention is to explore the connection between paintings and music by discussing the historical background of the two art forms, analyzing the selected music of Hwang in detail, and referring to other composers whose musical compositions were related and inspired by paintings.     Businesses According to the theory of sustainable development, combining with the current development status of the social logistics industry and the characteristics of green logistics, constructing a green logistics evaluation index system. Using cloud model and Delphi method to calculate the cloud weight of green logistics evaluation index, qualitative and quantitative conversion of evaluation index is realized by cloud generator. Take Jiangsu Province as an example to do empirical research, using the cloud model and its algorithm to get the evaluation cloud of green logistics, observing the evaluation result directly and discovering problem easy by comparing the evaluation cloud chart with ruler cloud chart. The evaluation results show that the cloud model is more reasonable, and the credibility of the evaluation results is improved

    Self-Contained In-The-Ear Devise to Deliver AAF

    The design and operating characteristics of the first self-contained in-the-ear device to deliver altered auditory feedback is described for applications with those who stutter. The device incorporates a microdigital signal processor core that reproduces the high fidelity of unaided listening and auditory self-monitoring while at the same time delivering altered auditory feedback. Delayed auditory feedback and frequency-altered feedback signals in combination or isolation can be generated to the user in a cosmetically appealing custom in-the-canal and completely in-the-canal design. Programming of the device is achieved through a personal computer, interface, and fitting software. Researchers and clinicians interested in evaluating persons who stutter outside laboratory settings in a natural environment and persons who stutter looking for an alternative or adjunct to traditional therapy options are ideal candidates for this technology. In both instances an inconspicuous ear level alternative to traditional body worn devices with external microphones and earphones is offered

    Experimental maps of DNA structure at nucleotide resolution distinguish intrinsic from protein-induced DNA deformations

    Recognition of DNA by proteins depends on DNA sequence and structure. Often unanswered is whether the structure of naked DNA persists in a protein–DNA complex, or whether protein binding changes DNA shape. While X-ray structures of protein–DNA complexes are numerous, the structure of naked cognate DNA is seldom available experimentally. We present here an experimental and computational analysis pipeline that uses hydroxyl radical cleavage to map, at single-nucleotide resolution, DNA minor groove width, a recognition feature widely exploited by proteins. For 11 protein–DNA complexes, we compared experimental maps of naked DNA minor groove width with minor groove width measured from X-ray co-crystal structures. Seven sites had similar minor groove widths as naked DNA and when bound to protein. For four sites, part of the DNA in the complex had the same structure as naked DNA, and part changed structure upon protein binding. We compared the experimental map with minor groove patterns of DNA predicted by two computational approaches, DNAshape and ORChID2, and found good but not perfect concordance with both. This experimental approach will be useful in mapping structures of DNA sequences for which high-resolution structural data are unavailable.     RLIPv2: Fast Scaling of Relational Language-Image Pre-training

    Relational Language-Image Pre-training (RLIP) aims to align vision representations with relational texts, thereby advancing the capability of relational reasoning in computer vision tasks. However, hindered by the slow convergence of RLIPv1 architecture and the limited availability of existing scene graph data, scaling RLIPv1 is challenging. In this paper, we propose RLIPv2, a fast converging model that enables the scaling of relational pre-training to large-scale pseudo-labelled scene graph data. To enable fast scaling, RLIPv2 introduces Asymmetric Language-Image Fusion (ALIF), a mechanism that facilitates earlier and deeper gated cross-modal fusion with sparsified language encoding layers. ALIF leads to comparable or better performance than RLIPv1 in a fraction of the time for pre-training and fine-tuning. To obtain scene graph data at scale, we extend object detection datasets with free-form relation labels by introducing a captioner (e.g., BLIP) and a designed Relation Tagger. The Relation Tagger assigns BLIP-generated relation texts to region pairs, thus enabling larger-scale relational pre-training. Through extensive experiments conducted on Human-Object Interaction Detection and Scene Graph Generation, RLIPv2 shows state-of-the-art performance on three benchmarks under fully-finetuning, few-shot and zero-shot settings. Notably, the largest RLIPv2 achieves 23.29mAP on HICO-DET without any fine-tuning, yields 32.22mAP with just 1% data and yields 45.09mAP with 100% data.     The Reliability and Validity of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) for Chinese University Students

    Aims: Depression is prevalent among university students worldwide, and the prevalence appears to be increasing. As an intermediate stage between being healthy and having depression, students with subthreshold depression could develop worsening depression or recover with intervention to prevent depression. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is a useful tool to assess subthreshold depression. The primary purpose of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of CES-D in Chinese university students. Secondly, we aimed to describe the prevalence of subthreshold depression among the student sample and examine its demographic correlates.Methods: A total of 2,068 university students participated in the study, and they were asked to respond to the Chinese CES-D, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). The factor structure was evaluated by conducting exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using a structural equation modeling approach. The reliability was assessed by calculating Cronbach’s alpha, inter-item correlation, and item-total correlation coefficients. The prevalence of subthreshold depression was calculated and demographic correlates of gender, grade, and major were examined by multiple regression.Results: The final sample included 1,920 participants. The EFA results suggested extraction of three factors (somatic symptoms, negative affect, and anhedonia) that account for 52.68% of total variance. The CFA results suggested that the newly derived model with 14 items was the best fit for our data. Six items were removed from the original scale (item 9, 10, 13, 15, 17, and 19). The Cronbach’s alpha of the 14-item CES-D was 0.87. The prevalence of subthreshold depression among university students reached 32.7% for the 20-item CES-D and 31% for the 14-item CES-D, although there was no significant difference of prevalence in gender, grade, and major.Conclusions: The CES-D has good reliability and validity for assessing subthreshold depression in Chinese university students
