Geographic clusters, regional productivity and resource reallocation across firms: Evidence from China
We link industrial clusters, regional productivity and resource reallocation efficiency with geographical and sectoral disaggregated data. Based on a county-industry level panel from 1998 to 2007 in China, we find that industrial clusters significantly increase local industries' productivity by lifting the average firm productivity and reallocating resources from less to more productive firms. Moreover, we find major mechanisms through which resource reallocation is improved within clusters: (i) clusters are associated with a higher firm turnover with increased entry and exit rates simultaneously; and (ii) within clusters' environment, the dispersion of individual firm's markup is significantly reduced, indicating intensified local competition within clusters. Such results suggest that industrial clusters in China help improve regional productivity and resource allocation efficiency with intensified competition and accelerated firm dynamics. The identification issues are carefully addressed by two-stage estimations with instrumental variables and other robustness checks
Diagnostic Value of Methylated Septin9 for Colorectal Cancer Detection
BackgroundMethylated Septin9 (mSEPT9) has been suggested as a reliable biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC) detection. We aimed to determine the diagnostic value of mSEPT9 for CRC detection in Chinese patients. In addition, we compared the diagnostic efficacy of mSEPT9 to traditional screening method [fecal occult blood test (FOBT)] and two biomarkers [carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen-199 (Ca-199)].MethodsOverall 248 subjects including 123 patients with CRC and 125 controls were included. Plasma and fecal samples were collected for CEA, Ca-199, mSEPT9, and FOBT tests. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of each method; receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted for the assessment of diagnostic accuracy, and comparisons among FOBT, mSEPT9, and the combination were assessed through area under the ROC curve (AUC).ResultsmSEPT9 achieved overall sensitivity and specificity of 61.8% [95% confidence interval (CI): 53.0–69.9%] and 89.6% (83.0–93.8%), respectively, with an AUC value of 0.757 (95% CI: 0.701–0.807), superior to FOBT [sensitivity: 61.4% (50.9–70.9%); specificity: 70.3% (59.1–79.5%); AUC: 0.658 (0.578–0.723)], CEA [sensitivity: 35.0% (27.1–43.7%); specificity: 62.6% (53.8–70.7%); AUC: 0.485 (0.411–0.559)], and Ca-199 [sensitivity: 17.9% (12.1–25.6%); specificity: 55.7% (48.9–64.1%); AUC: 0.353 (0.283–0.423)]. The combination of mSEPT9 and FOBT further improved sensitivity and AUC value of 84.1% (75.1–90.3%) and 0.807 (0.752–0.863), respectively, while specificity was declined to 62.2% (50.8–72.4%).ConclusionmSEPT9 demonstrated best diagnostic ability in CRC detection compared with FOBT, CEA, and Ca-199. The combination of mSEPT9 and FOBT further improved diagnostic sensitivity especially for early stage disease, which may provide a new approach for future CRC screening, though further investigations are warranted
Prognosis Prediction of Colorectal Cancer Using Gene Expression Profiles
Background: Investigation on prognostic markers for colorectal cancer (CRC) deserves efforts, but data from China are scarce. This study aimed to build a prognostic algorithm using differentially expressed gene (DEG) profiles and to compare it with the TNM staging system in their predictive accuracy for CRC prognosis in Chinese patients. Methods: DEGs in six paired tumor and corresponding normal tissues were determined using RNA-Sequencing. Subsequently, matched tumor and normal tissues from 127 Chinese patients were assayed for further validation. Univariate and multivariate Cox regressions were used to identify informative DEGs. A predictive index (PI) was derived as a linear combination of the products of the DEGs and their Cox regression coefficients. The combined predictive accuracy of the DEGs-based PI and tumors' TNM stages was also examined by a logistic regression model including the two predictors. The predictive performance was evaluated with the area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUCs).Results: Out of 75 candidate DEGs, we identified 10 DEGs showing statistically significant associations with CRC survival. A PI based on these 10 DEGs (PI-10) predicted CRC survival probability more accurately than the TNM staging system [AUCs for 3-year survival probability 0.73 (95% confidence interval: 0.64, 0.81) vs. 0.68 (0.59, 0.76)] but comparable to a simplified PI (PI-5) using five DEGs (LOC646627, BEST4, KLF9, ATP6V1A, and DNMT3B). The predictive accuracy was improved further by combining PI-5 and the TNM staging system [AUC for 3-year survival probability: 0.72 (0.63, 0.80)].Conclusion: Prognosis prediction based on informative DEGs might yield a higher predictive accuracy in CRC prognosis than the TNM staging system does
Industrial clustering, income and inequality in rural China
This study provides evidence that links industrial clusters and rural income in China. Based on a pooled cross-sectional dataset composed of rural households from 109, 121 and 313 counties in 1995, 2002 and 2007, respectively, as well as a unique density-based index measuring the existence of industrial clusters calculated from firm-level data, we identify the mechanisms by which industrial clusters simultaneously increase rural income and reduce income inequality among rural households in China. Furthermore, we provide systematic evidence that specialization, urbanization and industrialization, measured in standard ways, do not have such effects on rural household income or inequality. Our evidence suggests that in China's context, industrial clusters developed under joint efforts of entrepreneurs and local governments have lessened institutional constraints and provided relatively equal opportunities for rural residents to participate in nonfarm activities. As a result, in those areas, rural household income is increased, and income inequality is reduced. The findings of this study have important policy implications for reducing poverty and inequality, and, smoothing income gaps between socioeconomic groups in economic transitions
Design, Simulation, and Experimental Verification of a Destruction Mechanism of Transient Electronic Devices
To quickly destroy electronic devices and ensure information security, a destruction mechanism of transient electronic devices was designed in this paper. By placing the Ni-Cr film resistance and the energetic material between the chip and the package and heating the resistance by an electric current, the energetic material expanded and the chip cracked. The information on the chip was destroyed. The author simulated the temperature distribution and stress of the power-on structure in different sizes by ANSYS software. The simulation results indicate that the chip cracks within 50 ms under the trigger current of 0.5 A when a circular groove with an area of 1 mm2 and depth of 0.1 mm is filled with an expansion material with an expansion coefficient of 10−5°C−1. Then, the author prepared a sample for experimental verification. Experimental results show that the sample chip quickly cracks and fails within 10 ms under the trigger current of 1 A. The simulation and experimental results confirm the feasibility of the structure in quick destruction, which lays the foundation for developing instantaneous-failure integrated circuit products to meet information security applications
Effect of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine with Antiquorum Sensing Activity on Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Traditional Chinese herbal medicines (TCHMs) were tested for their ability of antiquorum sensing. Water extracts of Rhubarb, Fructus gardeniae, and Andrographis paniculata show antiquorumsensing activity when using Chromobacterium violaceum CV12472 as reporter; the sub-MIC concentrations of these TCHMs were tested against AHL-dependent phenotypic expressions of PAO1. Results showed significant reduction in pyocyanin pigment, protease, elastase production, and biofilm formation in PAO1 without inhibiting the bacterial growth, revealing that the QSI by the extracts is not related to static or killing effects on the bacteria. The results indicate a potential modulation of bacterial cell-cell communication, P. aeruginosa biofilm, and virulence factors by traditional Chinese herbal medicine. This study introduces not only a new mode of action for traditional Chinese herbal medicines, but also a potential new therapeutic direction for the treatment of bacterial infections, which have QSI activity and might be important in reducing virulence and pathogenicity of pathogenic bacteria
Psoraleae Fructus Ethanol Extract Induced Hepatotoxicity via Impaired Lipid Metabolism Caused by Disruption of Fatty Acid β-Oxidation
Herb-induced liver injury (HILI) is gradually increasing, and Psoraleae Fructus (PF) has been reported to induce hepatotoxicity. However, its underlying toxicity mechanism has been only poorly revealed. In this paper, we attempted to explore the liver injury and mechanism caused by Psoraleae Fructus ethanol extract (PFE). First, we administered PFE to mice for 4 weeks and evaluated their serum liver function indices. H&E staining was performed to observe the pathological changes of the livers. Oil red O staining was used to visualize hepatic lipids. Serum-untargeted metabolomics and liver proteomics were used to explore the mechanism of PF hepatotoxicity, and transmission electron microscopy was determined to assess mitochondria and western blot to determine potential target proteins expression. The results showed that PFE caused abnormal liver biochemical indicators and liver tissue injury in mice, and there was substantial fat accumulation in liver tissue in this group. Furthermore, metabolomic analysis showed that PFE changed bile acid synthesis, lipid metabolism, etc., and eight metabolites, including linoleic acid, which could be used as potential biomarkers of PFE hepatotoxicity. Proteomic analysis revealed that differential proteins were clustered in the mitochondrial transmembrane transport, the long-chain fatty acid metabolic process and purine ribonucleotide metabolic process. Multiomics analysis showed that eight pathways were enriched in both metabolomics and proteomics, such as bile secretion, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, and linoleic acid metabolism. The downregulation of SLC27A5, CPT1A, NDUFB5, and COX6A1 and upregulation of cytochrome C and ABCC3 expressions also confirmed the impaired fatty acid oxidative catabolism. Altogether, this study revealed that PFE induced hepatotoxicity by damaging mitochondria, reducing fatty acid β-oxidation levels, and inhibiting fatty acids ingested by bile acids
Associations between Milk Intake and Sleep Disorders in Chinese Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
We aimed to examine the association of milk intake with sleep disorders and their specific indicators. The current study included 768 adults aged 28–95 from Wenling, China. Milk intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire with ten food items, while sleep disorders were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), with higher scores indicating poorer sleep. The participants were divided into two groups according to the average intake of milk per week: rare intake (≤62.5 mL/week) and regular intake (>62.5 mL/week). Primary measurements were multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prevalence of sleep disorders concerning regular milk intake compared with rare intake. In secondary analyses, linear regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of milk intake on sleep disorders and their specific dimensions. Regular intake of milk did not have a significant association with sleep disorders compared with rare intake (adjusted OR: 0.72, 95%; CI: 0.51, 1.03), but this association was found to be pronounced with sleep disturbances (OR: 0.49, 95%; CI: 0.28, 0.87). Increased intake of milk was significantly associated with the lower scores of PSQI for sleep quality (β: −0.045, 95%; CI: −0.083, −0.007) and sleep disturbances (β: −0.059, 95%; CI: −0.090, −0.029), respectively. When stratified by age and gender, the benefits of milk intake for sleep disorders and sleep disturbances were more significant in older adults (≥65) and men than in younger persons and women. In summary, regular milk intake benefits sleep quality, which may contribute to nutritional psychiatric support for prevention against sleep disorders
Using Period Analysis to Timely Assess and Predict 5-Year Relative Survival for Liver Cancer Patients From Taizhou, Eastern China
Introduction: While timely assessment of long-term survival for patients with liver cancer is essential for the evaluation of early detection and screening programs of liver cancer, those data are extremely scarce in China. We aimed to timely and accurately assess long-term survival for liver cancer patients in eastern China. Methods: Patients diagnosed with liver cancer during 2004-2018 from four cancer registries with high-quality data from Taizhou, eastern China, were included. The period analysis was used to calculate the 5-year relative survival (RS) for overall and the stratification by sex, age at diagnosis, and region. The projected 5-year RS of liver cancer patients during 2019-2023 was also assessed using a model-based period analysis. Results: The overall 5-year RS for patients with liver cancer during 2014-2018 reached 32.4%, being 29.3% for men and 36.1% for women. The 5-year RS declined along with aging, decreasing from 38.2% for age 74 years, while the 5-year RS for urban area was higher compared to rural area (36.8% vs. 29.3%). The projected overall 5-year RS of liver cancer patients could reach 41.4% during the upcoming period 2019-2023.Conclusions: We provided, for first time in China using the period analysis, the most up-to-date 5-year RS for patients with liver cancer from Taizhou, eastern China, and also found that the 5-year RS for liver cancer patients have improved greatly during 2004-2018, which has important implications for the timely evaluation of early detection and screening programs for patients with liver cancer in eastern China
