    Circular photogalvanic effect induced by near-infrared radiation in InAs quantum wires patterned quasi two-dimensional electron system

    In this work we investigated the InAs/InAlAs quantum wires (QWRs) superlattice by optically exciting the structure with near-infrared radiation. By varying the helicity of the radiation at room temperature we observed the circular photogalvanic effect related to the C2vC_{2v} symmetry of the structure, which could be attributed to the formation of a quasi two-dimensional system underlying in the vicinity of the QWRs pattern. The ratio of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms shows an evolution of the spin-orbit interaction in quasi two-dimensional structure with the QWR layer deposition thickness.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Simvastatin Blocks Blood-Brain Barrier Disruptions Induced by Elevated Cholesterol Both In Vivo and In Vitro

    Background. Hypercholesterolemia and disruptions of the blood brain barrier (BBB) have been implicated as underlying mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Simvastatin therapy may be of benefit in treating AD; however, its mechanism has not been yet fully understood. Objective. To explore whether simvastatin could block disruption of BBB induced by cholesterol both in vivo and in vitro. Methods. New Zealand rabbits were fed cholesterol-enriched diet with or without simvastatin. Total cholesterol of serum and brain was measured. BBB dysfunction was evaluated. To further test the results in vivo, rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (RBMECs) were stimulated with cholesterol in the presence/absence of simvastatin in vitro. BBB disruption was evaluated. Results. Simvastatin blocked cholesterol-rich diet induced leakage of Evan's blue dye. Cholesterol content in the serum was affected by simvastatin, but not brain cholesterol. Simvastatin blocked high-cholesterol medium-induced decrease in TEER and increase in transendothelial FITC-labeled BSA Passage in RBMECs. Conclusions. The present study firstly shows that simvastatin improves disturbed BBB function both in vivo and in vitro. Our data provide that simvastatin may be useful for attenuating disturbed BBB mediated by hypercholesterolemia

    Study on the Dynamic Compound Structure Composed of Mast Cells, Blood Vessels, and Nerves in Rat Acupoint

    Background. Circulation system, immunity system, and nervous system have a close relationship with meridian phenomen. However, there is still lack of the results of dynamic changes of these structures in acupoint. The aim of this study is to explore the interrelationship by composite staining techniques. Methodology/Principal Findings. Twenty rats were separated into electroacupuncture group (EA) and control group (Con) randomly. In EA group, the Zusanli and Weishu were stimulated with the 0.1 mA for 25 min. The tissue of these acupoints was double-stained with acetylcholinesterase and Toluidine blue. The compound structure of mast cells, nervous fibers, and mast cells in the acupoint was observed. Conclusions/Significance. The blood vessels, mast cells and acetylcholinesterase responded nerves were clearly observed in acupoint tissues. EA can result in the mast cell recruitment and migration along the blood vessels and nervous bundle, which conformed the dynamic compound structure and played important roles in acupuncture

    Development of a diagnostic algorithm to ascertain malignant pleural effusion utilizing clinical indicators and serum metal concentrations

    BackgroundMalignant pleural effusion (MPE) is prevalent among cancer patients, indicating pleural metastasis and predicting poor prognosis. However, accurately identifying MPE in clinical settings is challenging. The aim of this study was to establish an innovative nomogram-derived model based on clinical indicators and serum metal ion levels to identify MPE.MethodsFrom July 2020 to May 2022, 428 patients diagnosed with pleural effusion (PE) were consecutively recruited. Comprehensive demographic details, clinical symptoms, imaging data, pathological information, and laboratory results, including serum metal ion levels, were systematically collected. The nomogram was created by incorporating the most significant predictors identified through LASSO and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The predictors were assigned weighted points based on their respective regression coefficients, allowing for the calculation of a total score that corresponds to the probability of MPE. Internal validation using bootstrapping techniques assessed the nomogram’s performance, including calibration, discrimination, and clinical applicability.ResultsSeven key variables were identified using LASSO regression and multiple regression analysis, including dyspnea, fever, X-ray/CT compatible with malignancy, pleural carcinoembryonic antigen(pCEA), serum neuron-specific enolase(sNSE), serum carcinoembryonic antigen(sCEA), and pleural lactate dehydrogenase(pLDH). Internal validation underscored the superior performance of our model (AUC=0.940). Decision curve analysis (DCA) analysis demonstrated substantial net benefit across a probability threshold range > 1%. Additionally, serum calcium and copper levels were significantly higher, while serum zinc levels were significantly lower in MPE patients compared to benign pleural effusion (BPE) patients.ConclusionThis study effectively developed a user-friendly and reliable MPE identification model incorporating seven markers, aiding in the classification of PE subtypes in clinical settings. Furthermore, our study highlights the clinical value of serum metal ions in distinguishing malignant pleural effusion from BPE. This significant advancement provides essential tools for physicians to accurately diagnose and treat patients with MPE

    VLBI Astrometry of Radio Stars to Link Radio and Optical Celestial Reference Frames: Observing Strategies

    The Gaia celestial reference frame (Gaia-CRF) will benefit from a close assessment with independent methods, such as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of radio stars at bright magnitudes. However, obtaining full astrometric parameters for each radio star through VLBI measurements demands a significant amount of observation time. This study proposes an efficient observing strategy that acquires double-epoch VLBI positions to measure the positions and proper motions of radio stars at a reduced cost. The solution for CRF link compatible with individual VLBI position measurements is introduced, and the optimized observing epoch scheduling is discussed. Applying this solution to observational data yields results sensitive to sample increase or decrease, yet they remain consistently in line with the literature at the 1-sigma level. This suggests the potential for improvement with a larger sample size. Simulations for adding observations demonstrate the double-epoch strategy reduces CRF link parameter uncertainties by over 30% compared to the five-parameter strategy.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomy Society (MNRAS
