Dietary taurine intake, nutrients intake, dietary habits and life stress by depression in Korean female college students: a case-control study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary taurine intake, nutrients intake, dietary habits and life stress by depression in Korean female college students.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this study, research data were collected in March 2009 and 65 patients with depression and 65 controls without depression participated. The CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression) scale was used for depression measure and controls were matched for age. A 3-day recall method was used for dietary assessment (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Average height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were 161.3±0.5cm, 55.3±1.0kg and 21.2±0.4kg/m<sup>2</sup> for depression patients and those of control group were 161.4±0.7cm, 53.1±0.8kg and 20.3±0.2kg/m<sup>2</sup>, respectively. Average dietary taurine intakes of depression patients and control group were 89.1 and 88.0 mg/day, respectively. There was no significant difference in dietary taurine intake between depression patients and control group. The average intakes of vitamin A (p<0.05), β-carotene (p<0.01), vitamin C (p<0.05), folic acid (p<0.05) and fiber (p<0.05) of depression patients were significantly lower compared to control group. The average total dietary habit score of depression patients (47.2) was significantly lower than that of control group (51.3) (p<0.01). The average dietary habit scores of “eating meals at regular times” (p<0.05), “eating adequate amount of meals” (p<0.05), “having meals with diverse foods” (p<0.05), “avoiding eating spicy foods” (p<0.01) and “eating protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs, beans more than 2 times a day” (p<0.05) were significantly lower in depression patients compare to control group. The average scores of total life stress (p<0.001) and all stress categories of depression patients were significantly higher than those of control group except faculty problem score.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results show that depression patients have poor dietary habits and unbalanced nutrition status. Also depression patients have higher life stress score.</p> <p>Therefore, continuous nutrition education and counselling for good dietary habits and balanced nutrition status are needed to prevent depression in Korean college students.</p
Observation of diurnal variations in mesoscale eddy sea-surface currents using GOCI data
The surface current field of a mesoscale eddy in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) was derived from consecutive Geostationary Ocean Color Imager chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration images using the normalized maximum cross-correlation method. The estimated current field of the eddy exhibited anticyclonic structure demonstrated by the objective dynamic thresholds of correlation coefficients. The eddy periphery was defined by fitting an ellipse to subjectively selected points from the frontal map of chl-a concentration data. Radial distribution and hourly variation of the current speed around the eddy were presented. In terms of the magnitude and direction, the estimated current field was in good agreement with altimeter-based current field and current vectors from surface drifters. Diurnal variations in the current speeds of the mesoscale eddies showed a quadratic relation to the wind speed
Mitochondrial Hsp90s suppress calcium-mediated stress signals propagating from mitochondria to the ER in cancer cells
Background: Resistance to cell death in the presence of stressful stimuli is one of the hallmarks of cancer cells acquired during multistep tumorigenesis, and knowledge of the molecular mechanism of stress adaptation can be exploited to develop cancer-selective therapeutics. Mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are physically interconnected organelles that can sense and exchange various stress signals. Although there have been many studies on stress propagation from the ER to mitochondria, reverse stress signals originating from mitochondria have not been well reported.Methods: After inactivation of the proteins by pharmacologic and genetic methods, the signal pathways were analyzed by fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, MTT assay, and western blotting. A mouse xenograft model was used to examine synergistic anticancer activity and the action mechanism of drugs in vivo.Results: We show in this study that mitochondrial heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) suppresses mitochondria-initiated calcium-mediated stress signals propagating into the ER in cancer cells. Mitochondrial Hsp90 inhibition triggers the calcium signal by opening the mitochondrial permeability transition pore and, in turn, the ER ryanodine receptor, via calcium-induced calcium release. Subsequent depletion of ER calcium activates unfolded protein responses in the ER lumen, thereby increasing the expression of a pro-apoptotic transcription factor, CEBP homologous protein (CHOP). Combined treatment with the ER stressor thapsigargin and the mitochondrial Hsp90 inhibitor gamitrinib augmented interorganelle stress signaling by elevating CHOP expression, and showed synergistic cytotoxic activity exclusively in cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.Conclusions: Collectively, mitochondrial Hsp90s confer cell death resistance to cancer cells by suppressing the mitochondria-initiated calcium-mediated interorganelle stress response.open0
Surface currents from hourly variations of suspended particulate matter from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager data
Surface currents in Korean coastal regions were obtained using the maximum cross-correlation method applied to hourly suspended particulate matter images from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager. Preliminary current vectors were filtered out by applying a series of quality-control procedures. The current vectors resulting from the tests were compared with the currents from a numerical model with tide and wind field. It was found that the estimated currents were more similarly to the currents caused by both tide and wind. A high degree of discrepancy was detected in regions of strong tidal currents, where the fundamental assumption of horizontal movement was limited due to the dominant vertical tidal mixing in the shallow region. The hourly rotations of the current vectors within a day were clarified by a comparison of the time-varying orientation angles of tidal ellipses. Controller optimization with constraints on probabilistic peak responses
Peak response is a more suitable index than mean response in the light of structural safety. In
this study, a controller optimization method is proposed to restrict peak responses of building structures
subject to earthquake excitations, which are modeled as partially stationary stochastic process. The
constraints are given with specified failure probabilities of peak responses. LQR is chosen to assure
stability in numerical process of optimization. Optimization problem is formulated with weightings on
controlled outputs as design variables and gradients of objective and constraint functions are derived. Full
state feedback controllers designed by the proposed method satisfy various design objectives and output
feedback controllers using LQG also yield similar results without significant performance deterioration.The work presented in this paper was partially supported by Research Fund of the National
