Efficacy of fundus photocoagulation combined with triamcinolone acetonide on diabetic retinopathy
AIM: To observe the efficacy of fundus photocoagulation combined with triamcinolone acetonide(TA)in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy(DR). METHODS: The clinical data of 94 patients(112 eyes)in our hospital from September 2016 to September 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. According to the treatment regimen, the patients were divided into fundus photocoagulation with TA group(study group, 54 cases 64 eyes)and fundus photocoagulation group(control group, 40 cases 48 eyes). The treatment conditions \〖best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), macular retinal thickness\〗 were monitored before treatment(T1)and after 7d, 1, 3 and 6mo of treatment(T2, T3, T4, T5), and the efficacy was assessed at T5, and the improvement times of clinical manifestations(fundus hemorrhage, exudation, retinal edema)were recorded, and the serological markers \〖intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM-1)and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)\〗 were measured at T1 and T5. RESULTS: At T1 to T5, there were statistically significant differences in the between-group effects, time-point effects and interaction effects of between-group and time-point of BCVA and macular retinal thickness(PPPPCONCLUSION: Fundus photocoagulation combined with TA can effectively improve the visual acuity and retinal edema in patients with DR, and it has significant efficacy, and it can help promote the recovery of clinical symptoms, reduce the vascular endothelial injury, and inhibit the neovascularization
Cross-sectional study of the relationship of peripheral blood cell profiles with severity of infection by adenovirus type 55
BACKGROUND: The immunologic profiles of patients with human adenovirus serotype 55 (HAdV-55) infections were characterized in subjects diagnosed with silent infections (n = 30), minor infections (n = 27), severe infections (n = 34), and healthy controls (n = 30) during a recent outbreak among Chinese military trainees. METHODS: Blood was sampled at the disease peak and four weeks later, and samples were analyzed to measure changes in leukocyte and platelet profiles in patients with different severities of disease. Differential lymphocyte subsets and cytokine profiles were measured by flow cytometry and Luminex xMAP®, and serum antibodies were analyzed by ELISA and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: Patients with severe HAdV infections had higher proportions of neutrophils and reduced levels of lymphocytes (p < 0.005 for both). Patients with minor and severe infections had significantly lower platelet counts (p < 0.005 for both) than those with silent infections. The silent and minor infection groups had higher levels of dendritic cells than the severe infection group. Relative to patients with silent infections, patients with severe infections had significantly higher levels of IL-17(+)CD4(+) cells, decreased levels of IL-17(+)CD8(+) cells, and higher levels of IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, and IFN-α2 (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with different severities of disease due to HAdV-55 infection had significantly different immune responses. These data provide an initial step toward the identification of patients at risk for more severe disease and the development of treatments against HAdV-55 infection
The LAMOST Survey of Background Quasars in the Vicinity of the Andromeda and Triangulum Galaxies -- II. Results from the Commissioning Observations and the Pilot Surveys
We present new quasars discovered in the vicinity of the Andromeda and
Triangulum galaxies with the LAMOST during the 2010 and 2011 observational
seasons. Quasar candidates are selected based on the available SDSS, KPNO 4 m
telescope, XSTPS optical, and WISE near infrared photometric data. We present
509 new quasars discovered in a stripe of ~135 sq. deg from M31 to M33 along
the Giant Stellar Stream in the 2011 pilot survey datasets, and also 17 new
quasars discovered in an area of ~100 sq. deg that covers the central region
and the southeastern halo of M31 in the 2010 commissioning datasets. These 526
new quasars have i magnitudes ranging from 15.5 to 20.0, redshifts from 0.1 to
3.2. They represent a significant increase of the number of identified quasars
in the vicinity of M31 and M33. There are now 26, 62 and 139 known quasars in
this region of the sky with i magnitudes brighter than 17.0, 17.5 and 18.0
respectively, of which 5, 20 and 75 are newly-discovered. These bright quasars
provide an invaluable collection with which to probe the kinematics and
chemistry of the ISM/IGM in the Local Group of galaxies. A total of 93 quasars
are now known with locations within 2.5 deg of M31, of which 73 are newly
discovered. Tens of quasars are now known to be located behind the Giant
Stellar Stream, and hundreds behind the extended halo and its associated
substructures of M31. The much enlarged sample of known quasars in the vicinity
of M31 and M33 can potentially be utilized to construct a perfect astrometric
reference frame to measure the minute PMs of M31 and M33, along with the PMs of
substructures associated with the Local Group of galaxies. Those PMs are some

Alteration and clinical potential in gut microbiota in patients with cerebral small vessel disease
BackgroundCerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a cluster of microvascular disorders with unclear pathological mechanisms. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is an essential regulatory mechanism between gut microbes and their host. Therefore, the compositional and functional gut microbiota alterations lead to cerebrovascular disease pathogenesis. The current study aims to determine the alteration and clinical value of the gut microbiota in CSVD patients.MethodsSixty-four CSVD patients and 18 matched healthy controls (HCs) were included in our study. All the participants underwent neuropsychological tests, and the multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging depicted the changes in brain structure and function. Plasma samples were collected, and the fecal samples were analyzed with 16S rRNA gene sequencing.ResultsBased on the alpha diversity analysis, the CSVD group had significantly decreased Shannon and enhanced Simpson compared to the HC group. At the genus level, there was a significant increase in the relative abundances of Parasutterella, Anaeroglobus, Megasphaera, Akkermansia, Collinsella, and Veillonella in the CSVD group. Moreover, these genera with significant differences in CSVD patients revealed significant correlations with cognitive assessments, plasma levels of the blood-brain barrier-/inflammation-related indexes, and structural/functional magnetic resonance imaging changes. Functional prediction demonstrated that lipoic acid metabolism was significantly higher in CSVD patients than HCs. Additionally, a composite biomarker depending on six gut microbiota at the genus level displayed an area under the curve of 0.834 to distinguish CSVD patients from HCs using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm.ConclusionThe evident changes in gut microbiota composition in CSVD patients were correlated with clinical features and pathological changes of CSVD. Combining these gut microbiota using the LASSO algorithm helped identify CSVD accurately
Chicken Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide 1A2, a Novel Avian Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) ORF2-Interacting Protein, Is Involved in Avian HEV Infection
Avian hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the main causative agent of big liver and spleen disease in chickens. Due to the absence of a highly effective cell culture system, there are few reports about the interaction between avian HEV and host cells. In this study, organic anion-transporting polypeptide 1A2 (OATP1A2) from chicken liver cells was identified to interact with ap237, a truncated avian HEV capsid protein spanning amino acids 313 to 549, by a glutathione S-transferase (GST) pulldown assay. GST pulldown and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) further confirmed that the extracellular domain of OATP1A2 directly binds with ap237. The expression levels of OATP1A2 in host cells are positively correlated with the amounts of ap237 attachment and virus infection. The distribution of OATP1A2 in different tissues is consistent with avian HEV infection in vivo. Finally, when the functions of OATP1A2 in cells are inhibited by its substrates or an inhibitor or blocked by ap237 or anti-OATP1A2 sera, attachment to and infection of host cells by avian HEV are significantly reduced. Collectively, these results displayed for the first time that OATP1A2 interacts with the avian HEV capsid protein and can influence viral infection in host cells. The present study provides new insight to understand the process of avian HEV infection of host cells
AT2023lli: A Tidal Disruption Event with Prominent Optical Early Bump and Delayed Episodic X-ray Emission
High-cadence, multiwavelength observations have continuously revealed the
diversity of tidal disruption events (TDEs), thus greatly advancing our
knowledge and understanding of TDEs. In this work, we conducted an intensive
optical-UV and X-ray follow-up campaign of TDE AT2023lli, and found a
remarkable month-long bump in its UV/optical light curve nearly two months
prior to maximum brightness. The bump represents the longest separation time
from the main peak among known TDEs to date. The main UV/optical outburst
declines as , making it one of the fastest decaying optically
selected TDEs. Furthermore, we detected sporadic X-ray emission 30 days after
the UV/optical peak, accompanied by a reduction in the period of inactivity. It
is proposed that the UV/optical bump could be caused by the self-intersection
of the stream debris, whereas the primary peak is generated by the reprocessed
emission of the accretion process. In addition, our results suggest that
episodic X-ray radiation during the initial phase of decline may be due to the
patched obscurer surrounding the accretion disk, a phenomenon associated with
the inhomogeneous reprocessing process. The double TDE scenario, in which two
stars are disrupted in sequence, is also a possible explanation for producing
the observed early bump and main peak. We anticipate that the multicolor light
curves of TDEs, especially in the very early stages, and the underlying physics
can be better understood in the near future with the assistance of dedicated
surveys such as the deep high-cadence survey of the 2.5-meter Wide Field Survey
