Gradient Descent on Neural Networks Typically Occurs at the Edge of Stability
We empirically demonstrate that full-batch gradient descent on neural network
training objectives typically operates in a regime we call the Edge of
Stability. In this regime, the maximum eigenvalue of the training loss Hessian
hovers just above the numerical value , and the
training loss behaves non-monotonically over short timescales, yet consistently
decreases over long timescales. Since this behavior is inconsistent with
several widespread presumptions in the field of optimization, our findings
raise questions as to whether these presumptions are relevant to neural network
training. We hope that our findings will inspire future efforts aimed at
rigorously understanding optimization at the Edge of Stability. Code is

l-Fucose Stimulates Utilization of d-Ribose by \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e MG1655 ΔfucAO and \u3cem\u3eE. coli\u3c/em\u3e Nissle 1917 ΔfucAO Mutants in the Mouse Intestine and in M9 Minimal Medium
Escherichia coli MG1655 uses several sugars for growth in the mouse intestine. To determine the roles of l-fucose and d-ribose, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant and an E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant were fed separately to mice along with wild-type E. coli MG1655. The E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant colonized the intestine at a level 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the wild type, but the E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant and the wild type colonized at nearly identical levels. Surprisingly, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO ΔrbsK mutant was eliminated from the intestine by either wild-type E. coli MG1655 or E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO, suggesting that the ΔfucAO mutant switches to ribose in vivo. Indeed, in vitro growth experiments showed that l-fucose stimulated utilization of d-ribose by the E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant but not by an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucK mutant. Since the ΔfucK mutant cannot convert l-fuculose to l-fuculose-1-phosphate, whereas the ΔfucAO mutant accumulates l-fuculose-1-phosphate, the data suggest that l-fuculose-1-phosphate stimulates growth on ribose both in the intestine and in vitro. An E. coli Nissle 1917 ΔfucAO mutant, derived from a human probiotic commensal strain, acted in a manner identical to that of E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, l-fucose at a concentration too low to support growth stimulated the utilization of ribose by the wild-type E. coli strains in vitro. Collectively, the data suggest that l-fuculose-1-phosphate plays a role in the regulation of ribose usage as a carbon source by E. coli MG1655 and E. coli Nissle 1917 in the mouse intestine
Peak power tracking for a solar buck charger

The peak power tracker uses a perturb and observe algorithm to actively track the solar panel's peak power point and a global sweep algorithm accounts for startup and multiple local maxima. The tracker takes the place of the current mode loop in the converter's control scheme by providing a battery with peak charging current. A voltage mode loop is also designed to take over control from the tracker to complete the multi-loop structure. A solar panel simulator is designed to mimic the characteristics of an actual solar panel to allow careful testing of the tracking algorithms. A test circuit board is built and its operation is verified. Finally, the power extracting potential of the active tracking method from this thesis is compared to two simpler solar regulators.by Jeremy Michael Cohen.M.Eng
Abundances in Stars from the Red Giant Branch Tip to the Near Main Sequence in M71: II. Iron Abundance
We present [Ffe/H] abundance results that involve a sample of stars with a
wide range in luminosity from luminous giants to stars near the turnoff in a
globular cluster. Our sample of 25 stars in M71 includes 10 giant stars more
luminous than the RHB, 3 horizontal branch stars, 9 giant stars less luminous
than the RHB, and 3 stars near the turnoff. We analyzed both Fe I and Fe II
lines in high dispersion spectra observed with HIRES at the W. M. Keck
Observatory. We find that the [Fe/H] abundances from both Fe I and Fe II lines
agree with each other and with earlier determinations. Also the [Fe/H] obtained
from Fe I and Fe II lines is constant within the rather small uncertainties for
this group of stars over the full range in Teff and luminosity, suggesting that
NLTE effects are negligible in our iron abundance determination. In this
globular cluster, there is no difference among the mean [Fe/H] of giant stars
located at or above the RHB, RHB stars, giant stars located below the RHB and
