    Research Update: Recent progress in the development of effective dielectrics for high-output triboelectric nanogenerator

    A new energy generating device, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), was discovered in 2012 and thereafter, many applications such as portable power sources and self-powered, appropriate for portable electronic devices. So far, rapid development of device fabrication technologies and mechanical system designs significantly increased the instantaneous output power up to several tens of mW/cm2. This article provides a comprehensive review of effective dielectrics used so far in TENGs for further enhancement in output power, as well as the fundamental issues regarding the materials. Finally, we show some strategies for obtaining the properties that the materials should have as effective dielectrics.ope

    Neuroprotective and anti-oxidant effects of caffeic acid isolated from Erigeron annuus leaf

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Since oxidative stress has been implicated in a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), natural antioxidants are promising candidates of chemopreventive agents. This study examines antioxidant and neuronal cell protective effects of various fractions of the methanolic extract of <it>Erigeron annuus </it>leaf and identifies active compounds of the extract.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Antioxidant activities of the fractions from <it>Erigeron annuus </it>leaf were examined with [2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenz thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt)] (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Neuroprotective effect of caffeic acid under oxidative stress induced by H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>was investigated with [3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This study demonstrated that butanol fraction had the highest antioxidant activity among all solvent fractions from methanolic extract <it>E. annuus </it>leaf. Butanol fraction had the highest total phenolic contents (396.49 mg of GAE/g). Caffeic acid, an isolated active compound from butanol fraction, showed dose-dependent <it>in vitro </it>antioxidant activity. Moreover, neuronal cell protection against oxidative stress induced cytotoxicity was also demonstrated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>Erigeron annuus </it>leaf extracts containing caffeic acid as an active compound have antioxidative and neuroprotective effects on neuronal cells.</p

    Activation of spleen tyrosine kinase is required for TNF-Ī±-induced endothelin-1 upregulation in human aortic endothelial cells

    AbstractEndothelin-1 (ET-1) promotes atherosclerosis. We tested whether spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) mediates tumor necrosis factor-Ī± (TNF-Ī±)-induced ET-1 upregulation in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and sought to identify the signal pathways involved. TNF-Ī±-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) activated Syk and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), which was required for the activation of AP-1 and subsequent ET-1 gene transcription. ROS mediated c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) is also required for AP-1 activation, but Syk and PI3K regulated AP-1 activation independently of JNK. Through regulation of ET-1 production, Syk could be implicated in atherosclerosis

However, many complications can occur, such as vessel injury, pneumothorax, hydrothorax, nerve injury, arrhythmia and infection at the insertion site. We encountered an unusual complication of a localized right hydrothorax that was initially misinterpreted as an atelectasis after left internal jugular vein catheterization and right lateral positioning for a left lower lobectomy

    Vertigo Induced During Coitus

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features of vertigo developed during sexual intercourse.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and laboratory findings of seven patients who reported recurrent vertigo during sexual intercourse.Results: All the patients reported spinning sensation for a few minutes to 1 h, which developed during the coitus. Most patients (6/7, 86%) reported associated auditory symptoms including tinnitus (n = 4), ear fullness (n = 2), autophony (n = 1), hearing impairment (n = 1), or hyperacusis (n = 1). Four patients reported the vertigo to occur exclusively during sexual intercourse or masturbation while the other three patients also experienced vertigo during other physical activities. Underlying disorders included Meniere's disease (n = 3), superior canal dehiscence (n = 1), and high jugular bulb anomaly (n = 1) while the remaining two patients had no identifiable causes.Conclusions: Various disorders may cause coital vertigo probably due to disruption of the mechanism that normally refrains the increased intracranial pressure from being directly transferred to the peripheral vestibular organs
