    Color and Emotion- a study on the affective judgment across media and in relation to visual stimuli

    Four experiments were carried out to describe emotional responses to color and to analyze the relationship between color attributes and emotional dimensions. Conceptualization and measurement systems of emotion were discussed and emotional responses to colors were assessed in terms of valence, arousal, and dominance dimensions (Mehrabian, 1978; Osgood, Suci, & Tannenbaum, 1957), using Self Assessment Manikin (SAM) (Lang, 1980). The patterns of affective judgment were presented according to hue, Chroma, and lightness. Chroma was positively correlated with each of the three emotional dimensions in all experiments. In order to account for the cognitive quantity of color, stimuli were selected following hue and tone categorizations and based on the CIELab Lch system. Empirical evidence indicates that emotional responses to color vary more strongly with regard to tone than to hue categories. Moreover, the influence of the presentation medium on emotional response to color was investigated by presenting colors either on DIN A5-size paper or on CRT monitors. Utilizing the empirical results, a practical application tool was suggested for marketing purposes. In addition, emotional response to color was examined in a cross-modality stimulus context. Other than colors, modalities of visual stimulus, such as pictures selected from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) (Lang, Bradley, & Cuthbert, 2005), film-clips, and adjectives were employed as background stimuli. Context effect was investigated by comparison to prior results and the emotional response to colors in arousal shifted significantly toward less excited. Judgmental shifts of affectivity of background stimuli were also analyzed. Furthermore, the process of affective judgment of colors was debated and future studies were proposed

    Affective responses to chromatic ambient light in a vehicle

    This study investigates the emotional responses to the color of vehicle interior lighting using self-assessment and electroencephalography (EEG). The study was divided into two sessions: the first session investigated the potential of ambient lighting colors, and the second session was used to develop in-vehicle lighting color guidelines. Every session included thirty subjects. In the first session, four lighting colors were assessed using seventeen adjectives. As a result, 'Preference, Softness, Brightness, and Uniqueness were found to be the four factors that best characterize the atmospheric properties of interior lighting in vehicles. Ambient illumination, according to EEG data, increased people's arousal and lowered their alpha waves. The following session investigated a wider spectrum of colors using four factors extracted from the previous session. As a result, bluish and purplish lighting colors had the highest preference and uniqueness among ten lighting colors. Green received an intermediate preference and a high uniqueness score. With its great brightness and softness, Neutral White also achieved an intermediate preference rating. Despite receiving a low preference rating, warm colors were considered to be soft. Red was the least preferred color, but its uniqueness and roughness were highly rated. This study is expected to provide a basic theory on emotional lighting guidelines in the vehicle context, providing manufacturers with objective rationale

    Affective Role of the Future Autonomous Vehicle Interior

    Recent advancements in autonomous technology allow for new opportunities in vehicle interior design. Such a shift in in-vehicle activity suggests vehicle interior spaces should provide an adequate manner by considering users' affective desires. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the affective role of future vehicle interiors. Thirty one participants in ten focus groups were interviewed about challenges they face regarding their current vehicle interior and expectations they have for future vehicles. Results from content analyses revealed the affective role of future vehicle interiors. Advanced exclusiveness and advanced convenience were two primary aspects identified. The identified affective roles of each aspect are a total of eight visceral levels, four visceral levels each, including focused, stimulating, amused, pleasant, safe, comfortable, accommodated, and organized. We expect the results from this study to lead to the development of affective vehicle interiors by providing the fundamental knowledge for developing conceptual direction and evaluating its impact on user experiences.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

Their physicochemical and electrochemical properties depend on the chemical structure of the MPc and the central metal atom. Recent reviews of MPcs focused on their electrochemical performance in specific catalytic reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction and CO2 reduction reaction. However, understanding the structure of MPcs in depth is important, since their electrochemical catalytic activity is affected by structural modifications of MPcs.     Hi,KIA: A Speech Emotion Recognition Dataset for Wake-Up Words

    Wake-up words (WUW) is a short sentence used to activate a speech recognition system to receive the user's speech input. WUW utterances include not only the lexical information for waking up the system but also non-lexical information such as speaker identity or emotion. In particular, recognizing the user's emotional state may elaborate the voice communication. However, there is few dataset where the emotional state of the WUW utterances is labeled. In this paper, we introduce Hi, KIA, a new WUW dataset which consists of 488 Korean accent emotional utterances collected from four male and four female speakers and each of utterances is labeled with four emotional states including anger, happy, sad, or neutral. We present the step-by-step procedure to build the dataset, covering scenario selection, post-processing, and human validation for label agreement. Also, we provide two classification models for WUW speech emotion recognition using the dataset. One is based on traditional hand-craft features and the other is a transfer-learning approach using a pre-trained neural network.     Effect of a New Prokinetic Agent DA-9701 Formulated with Corydalis Tuber and Pharbitidis Semen on Cytochrome P450 and UDP-Glucuronosyltransferase Enzyme Activities in Human Liver Microsomes

    DA-9701 is a new botanical drug composed of the extracts of Corydalis tuber and Pharbitidis semen, and it is used as an oral therapy for the treatment of functional dyspepsia in Korea. The inhibitory potentials of DA-9701 and its component herbs, Corydalis tuber and Pharbitidis semen, on the activities of seven major human cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and four UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes in human liver microsomes were investigated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. DA-9701 and Corydalis tuber extract slightly inhibited UGT1A1-mediated etoposide glucuronidation, with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 188 and 290 μg/mL, respectively. DA-9701 inhibited CYP2D6-catalyzed bufuralol 1′-hydroxylation with an inhibition constant (Ki) value of 6.3 μg/mL in a noncompetitive manner. Corydalis tuber extract competitively inhibited CYP2D6-mediated bufuralol 1′-hydroxylation, with a Ki value of 3.7 μg/mL, whereas Pharbitidis semen extract showed no inhibition. The volume in which the dose could be diluted to generate an IC50 equivalent concentration (volume per dose index) value of DA-9701 for inhibition of CYP2D6 activity was 1.16 L/dose, indicating that DA-9701 may not be a potent CYP2D6 inhibitor. Further clinical studies are warranted to evaluate the in vivo extent of the observed in vitro interactions

    Lymph node density as a prognostic variable in node-positive bladder cancer: a meta-analysis

Here, we investigate the relationship between LN density and clinical outcome in patients with LN-positive disease, following radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. Methods PubMed, SCOPUS, the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant published literature. Results Fourteen studies were included in the meta-analysis, with a total number of 3311 patients. Of these 14 publications, 6 studies, (533 patients), 10 studies (2966 patients), and 5 studies (1108 patients) investigated the prognostic association of LN density with disease-free survival (DFS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS), respectively. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) for DFS was 1.45 (95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.10–1.91) without heterogeneity (I2 = 0 %, p = 0.52). Higher LN density was significantly associated with poor DSS (pooled HR, 1.53; 95 % CI, 1.23–1.89). However, significant heterogeneity was found between studies (I2 = 66 %, p = 0.002). The pooled HR for OS was statistically significant (pooled HR, 1.45; 95 % CI, 1.11–1.90) without heterogeneity (I2 = 42 %, p = 0.14). The results of the Begg and Egger tests suggested that publication bias was not evident in this meta-analysis. Conclusions The data from this meta-analysis indicate that LN density is an independent predictor of clinical outcome in LN-positive patients. LN density may be useful in future staging systems, thus allowing better prognostic classification of LN-positive bladder cancer

    Lung cancer with superior vena cava syndrome diagnosed by intravascular biopsy using EBUS-TBNA

    AbstractSince superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a critical condition, immediate diagnostic approach and therapy are imperative to avoid potentially life-threatening complications. Here, we report a case of lung cancer with SVCS, which was diagnosed through intravascular tumor biopsy using endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). EBUS-TBNA enabled us to obtain tissue sufficient for diagnosis, without significant complications. Prompt diagnosis was followed by appropriate anticancer treatment and improvement in the symptoms. For patients suspected of SVCS and requiring prompt pathologic diagnosis, we can consider EBUS-TBNA to diagnose intravascular or mediastinal tumors and provide an accurate diagnosis

    Prebiotic potential of green banana flour: impact on gut microbiota modulation and microbial metabolic activity in a murine model

    IntroductionGreen banana flour can be used as a prebiotic due to its ability to promote gut health and provide several health benefits. In this study, we investigated whether feeding mice green banana flour at different doses would alter intestinal microbiota composition.MethodsWe fed C57BL/6N mice either a Low-dose (500 mg/kg/day) or High-dose (2000 mg/kg/day) of green banana flour daily for 3 weeks, and fecal samples were collected on days 0, 14, and 21 for microbiota analysis.ResultsOur results showed that the composition of intestinal microbiota was significantly altered by day 21, regardless of the dose. Notably, the consumption of green banana flour increased the presence of beneficial bacteria, including Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002, Turicibacter, Parasutterella, Gastranaerophilales_ge, and RF39_ge. These changes in the intestinal microorganisms were accompanied by increased biological processes such as amino acid biosynthesis and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Conversely, the consumption of green banana flour resulted in a decrease in biological processes related to carbohydrate degradation, glycerol degradation, and similar functions.DiscussionThese results emphasize the potential of green banana flour as a prebiotic that can benefit the gut microbiome

    Natural Food Additives and Preservatives for Fish-Paste Products: A Review of the Past, Present, and Future States of Research

    Fish-paste products, also known as fish cakes or surimi-based products, are worldwide favorites. Surimi, a wet protein concentrate of fish muscle, is used as an intermediate raw material to produce surimi seafood. The flavor, texture, taste, shelf-life, and market value of surimi-based products depend on the source of the fish meat, type of applied heat treatment, and additives used to prepare the surimi. While preparing surimi with chemical additives, several problems have been observed, such as a lack of unique characteristics, inferior acceptability, and poor functionality. Various types of fish-paste products have been developed by using different ingredients (e.g., vegetables, seafood, herbs and oriental medicines, grains and roots including carrots, and functional food materials). However, a systematic review of fish-paste products prepared using natural food additives has not yet been performed. Therefore, the quality characteristics of fish-paste products and their functionalities were elucidated in this study. With the increasing demand for surimi seafood products, the functional properties, physiochemical properties, and shelf-life of surimi-based products need to be improved. This review will aid the preparation of new value-added products in the surimi industry
