    Difference system for Selberg correlation integrals

    The Selberg correlation integrals are averages of the products ∏s=1m∏l=1n(xs−zl)ÎŒs\prod_{s=1}^m\prod_{l=1}^n (x_s - z_l)^{\mu_s} with respect to the Selberg density. Our interest is in the case m=1m=1, ÎŒ1=ÎŒ\mu_1 = \mu, when this corresponds to the ÎŒ\mu-th moment of the corresponding characteristic polynomial. We give the explicit form of a (n+1)×(n+1)(n+1) \times (n+1) matrix linear difference system in the variable ÎŒ\mu which determines the average, and we give the Gauss decomposition of the corresponding (n+1)×(n+1)(n+1) \times (n+1) matrix. For ÎŒ\mu a positive integer the difference system can be used to efficiently compute the power series defined by this average.Comment: 21 page

    Age- and Sex-Associated Effects on Acute-Phase Proteins in Göttingen Minipigs

    Göttingen minipigs are a useful model for diseases having an inflammatory component, and the associated use of acute-phase proteins (APP) as biomarkers of inflammation warrants establishment of their reference ranges. The objective of this study was to establish reference values for selected APP in Göttingen minipigs and to investigate the effects of age, sex, and various stimuli on these ranges. Serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin, pig major acute-phase protein (PMAP), albumin, and porcine α-1 acid glycoprotein (PAGP) were evaluated in 4 age groups (6, 16, 24 and 40–48 wk) of male and female Göttingen minipigs. In addition, minipigs were tested under 2 housing conditions, after acute LPS challenge, and after diet-induced obesity with and without mild diabetes. Changing the pigs to a new environment induced significant increases in CRP, PMAP, haptoglobin and PAGP and a decrease in albumin. An acute LPS stimulus increased CRP, PMAP, haptoglobin, and SAA; PAGP was unchanged and albumin decreased. Obese pigs with and without diabetes showed increases in CRP and PAGP, albumin decreased, and haptoglobin and SAA were unchanged. PMAP was increased only in obese pigs without diabetes. In conclusion, reference values for CRP, PMAP, haptoglobin, SAA, PAGP and albumin were established for male and female Göttingen minipigs of different ages. These APP were influenced by age and sex, underlining the importance of considering these factors when designing and interpreting studies including aspects of inflammation.     Kinematics of Spiral Arm Streaming in M51

    We use CO and H alpha velocity fields to study the gas kinematics in the spiral arms and interarms of M51 (NGC 5194), and fit the 2D velocity field to estimate the radial and tangential velocity components as a function of spiral phase (arm distance). We find large radial and tangential streaming velocities, which are qualitatively consistent with the predictions of density wave theory and support the existence of shocks. The streaming motions are complex, varying significantly across the galaxy as well as along and between arms. Aberrations in the velocity field indicate that the disk is not coplanar, perhaps as far in as 20\arcsec\ (800 pc) from the center. Velocity profile fits from CO and H alpha are typically similar, suggesting that most of the H alpha emission originates from regions of recent star formation. We also explore vortensity and mass conservation conditions. Vortensity conservation, which does not require a steady state, is empirically verified. The velocity and density profiles show large and varying mass fluxes, which are inconsistent with a steady flow for a single dominant global spiral mode. We thus conclude that the spiral arms cannot be in a quasi-steady state in any rotating frame, and/or that out of plane motions may be significant.Comment: 50 pages, including 20 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ.
